this crew sees Izzy as the figurehead of their ship — the figurehead of a ship “represents not only the eyes of the ship guiding them safely home but also the spirit of the vessel as well”

to the crew, Izzy — not Stede or Ed — is the spirit of the Revenge

and why not? he’s always been the representative of the crew to the captain of the ship, and at some point he stopped living for Ed and started fully living for the crew, keeping them as safe as possible from Ed’s madness

It's true -- Paul Dini talked to me about it, and I suggested John Hurt as the voice actor. As I remember, Paul's producer felt it was too abstract and weird.
