They say it’s summer, but I feel a wintering in my bones. A series of events has created a vacuum in my life, followed by a deep inner emptiness, and, to be honest, now I don’t know if I even want to fill it. I felt that cavernous discomfort yesterday and so I got on my bike and rode aimlessly around the local college campus, deserted by humans and overrun by geese for the season. Being alone in a lonely place made something different today. I woke up and felt the quality of hollowness that’s been so unbearable somehow shifted, even if ever so slightly. As recently as two days ago I cried about it. I’m sure I will again. But maybe parts of me are starting to adjust to all this newly created space I’ve been jostling around in for the last few weeks. Maybe it’s becoming a little less foreign. Maybe I’m softening into a new form. Maybe it’s winter on the inside and summer on the outside and maybe that’s finally okay.

𝘍𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘔𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘺 Oil, oil pastel + graphite on canvas 40"h x 30"w 2021 Now available on my website (amandasandlin.com) link in bio Throughout lockdown I was in the privileged position of spending a lot of time at home, in the quiet, where my imagination went wild. I got lost in daydreams that triggered such a visceral response, it was as if on another plane or dimension I was already there or had already experienced it. #amandasandlin #emergingartist #abstractlandscape #coloradoartist #boulderartist (at Boulder, Colorado) https://www.instagram.com/p/CXgrdLqOc6p/?utm_medium=tumblr

A color story 🌑 I’ve found myself drawn to dark and deep hues of greens, blues, blacks, browns over the last year, a leaning that began in the middle of our first pandemic winter. But lately I’ve been thinking it might be more so about the depression I dealt with consistently in my 20s. It was a tough decade in that department. In the last two years of my 30s those waves of darkness have faded. They’re almost non existent, it’s like a miracle, really. I have my theories why, but from this grounded place it feels safe to dive in and explore/process my experiences with depression in a less-attached way. As always, color is a pillar and guiding force in my practice. Here’s some inspiration of late. 1) Helen Frankenthaler 2) Clyfford Still 3) Edvard Munch 4) Mark Rothko #helenfrankenthaler #rothko #edvardmunch #clyffordstill #abstractexpressionism #behindtheart #emergingartist — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/2ZfB0NS
