Explaining subcultures: grunge
Grunge is a music based subculture with fashion and ideology associated with it. Some people criticize the label and believe grunge is just an offshoot of punk. Regardless it still left its mark on American culture
In this post I’ll talk about music, ideology, fashion/visuals, and media representation.
Music: Nirvana is a really well known band associated with grunge, but there’s lots of other bands. The music is important to the subculture so be sure to give it a listen
Ideology: grunge ideology is pretty similar to punk ideology, leading back to the claim by some that grunge is just punk repackaged. A lot of more left leaning beliefs and distaste towards materialism, the government, and big corporations.
Fashion/visuals: grunge “fashion” is actually anti fashion. Thrifted items, dulled colors, messy hair and makeup, etc. it’s largely about rejecting vanity, materialism, and societal standards of appearance, but also just about comfort and practicality. More feminine grunge looks often crossover with kinderwh0re. Makeup (if worn) is usually dark around the eyes and red lipstick was a staple. It was usually messy.

Media representation:

That’s it! I just do these for fun so im obviously not an expert. Feel free to correct me if anything is inaccurate

Explaining subcultures: Gyaru.
Gyaru is a subculture originating from Japan in the late 90s. The word “gyaru” (ă‚źăƒŁăƒ« in katakana) comes from the English word “gal”. It has a very interesting history but that’s not something I’ll be covering in this post. If the subculture interests you it’s definitely worth looking into!
In this post I’ll talk about music, ideology, aesthetic/style, media, and controversy.
Music: unlike many subcultures, you don’t necessarily have to listen to a specific type of music to be gyaru. However there is certain music popular with gyaru such as eurobeat as well as musicians who are gyaru. Black Diamond and softboiledegg for example. Eurobeat and similar electronic music gained popularity because it was used for parapara, a dance style popular among gyaru.
Here are some playlists!
Have fun listening and maybe learning some dances!
Ideology: Gyaru rejected the quiet and polite culture of Japan. The main central ideology is to put fun first. Alongside this gyaru were very loud and typically considered ill behaved or rude. They wore flashy, showy clothing and would squat in the streets. They are also much more casual and open about things like sexuality. Egg, a well known Gyaru magazine, coined the tagline “get wild and be sexy!”
Aesthetic/style: gyaru was originally influenced by western fashion. Much of this influence can still be seen in modern gyaru style. There are loads of different substyles but most have these traits in common. Tan skin (although the tan has died down over time), bleached or dyed hair, makeup with lashes, a nose highlight, and a droop on the outer corner of the eye, manicured nails, and usually flashy or showy clothing.
Some examples

The guys at the end are called gyaruo. That’s a boy gyaru.
Media representation:

Controversy: although most gyaru don’t go this far, many have been accused of imitating black people. Some gyaru wear box braids and many in the past have tanned VERY dark. Some did this on purpose while others were just trying to push their look to the extreme. Although it’s rarely done with ill intent it’s not something that should be recreated and it’s best not to tan much further than your skin can naturally go.

Thanks for reading! I’m sorry I took so long to post this.
(P.S. non Japanese gyaru also exist! They’re called gaijin gyaru)

Explaining subcultures: goth.
Goth falls into a lot of sub-categories and I don’t plan to go over all of them. If this is something you’re interested I definitely encourage you to look further into them.
In this post I’ll talk about: music, ideology, aesthetic/style, and media representation.
Music: goth is a primarily music-based subculture. If you listen to the music you’re a goth. Regardless of how you dress. Early goth music most likely originated with post punk and evolved from there
Some bands include, the cure, strawberry switchblade, siouxie and the banshees, and many more.
Here are some playlists!
Happy listening!
Goth ideology:
Goths advocate free thinking and self expression. The bizarre is not something to be feared but something to be explored and celebrated. Gothic music, art, and literature also explore the beauty in dark themes.
Style/aesthetic:
Although there are many ways of dressing, the examples I share here will be mainly more traditional goths. You should definitely check out more sub-styles though! They’re really interesting. Another thing to remember is that just dressing the part doesn’t make you goth, and you don’t even need to look a certain way to be goth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bats nest hair is common but there are lots of other styles to try. The main color palette is black sometimes with other colors accenting it. Some people do incorporate brighter colors as well, though! For example strawberry switchblade.
Tumblr media
Another common theme is layering and using different textures. Rosaries are a popular accessory. There are existing stores catering to goths but it’s also great to thrift and diy for a unique look.
Goths in media:
Lydia Deetz: Beetlejuice

The South Park goths:

Mortician Addams from the Addams family:

Thank you for reading! If this caught your interest I encourage you to research further! Any goths reading, please let me know if I got anything wrong.

Anyone who uses religion to harm people (I’m fine with religion but y’all know the sort of people I’m talking about)
People who bully kids for being kids. You guys suck.

We need to have a conversation about how Beetlejuice and Lydia are literally “coded” to be a couple.
When examining the movie Beetlejuice (1988) and its various adaptations, including the Broadway musical and the animated series, certain clues can be detected suggesting a potential romantic or emotional connection between the characters of Beetlejuice and Lydia Deetz. This type of relationship is often referred to me as “ship coded”, but what does it mean? It means that the characters are designed and/or marketed in a way that makes their romantic involvement plausible or hinted at, even though it's not explicitly expressed in the plot.
The animated series and promotional materials played a significant role in shaping this perception. The wedding scene, which was the most marketable, generated a lot of “shipping” material. It is undeniable that they complement each other well. However, the animated series was also ambiguous about their relationship, leading to unnecessary arguments about their status. The movie and current musical version do not have much romantic content, but the chemistry between the two is undeniable, whether it's platonic or romantic.
What I mean by this is: you can see both of them as siblings with chaotic energy, you might think of him as a crazy uncle who takes his goth niece on various chaotic adventures, you can see them as a couple, the possibilities are endless... So let's strive to be normal, civilized individuals within the fandom and create a space where we can peacefully coexist without turning it into a ship war.

By safe space I mean ace people deserve a space where they can be themselves without being dunked on. Where they can share their experiences and support each other. Is that what you’re asking?

Modest/hijabi friendly outfits, gyaru edition! (This one was really difficult and some of the outfits may need some tweaking depending on how strict you are about modesty)
