My contribution to the @womenwantedzine from a while back! This was the double page spread I did for miss Portgas D. Rouge. I think I’ve improved a lot since I did this piece but I’m still proud of it and it was an honor to be apart of this project. Happy belated Mother’s Day everyone! ^ ^

for context, seer @ameiiiko-art went back to save enchantress because she thought she needed to make it out to win the promo match, and got stuck just a bit away from the gate after trying and almost succeeding to rescue. We got a tie anyway tho, they made it lol… we couldn’t get the replay but I assure you it was AMAZING

In One Piece, it would make sense for the crew to all speak the same language, but in diverse crews it would become a blend, because isolated groups often start to diverge from standard dialects based on the context they operate within. Which is a fancy way of saying they make their own language based on what words they need

The Straw Hat shipspeak would primarily be a blend of Grand Line and East Blue, due to half the crew spending most of their life in East Blue and the other half spending most of their life in the Grand Line. But beyond the basics, it gets a little complicated

For navigation and ocean related words, it’s an even mix between East Blue and Fishman Island, because Nami got her training from Arlong but had to communicate her navigational needs in East Blue, and Jinbei knows more about Grand Line specific weather and current phenomena which he grew up learning on Fishman Island

More complicated, technical words are Grand Line with a Water 7 flavor because they mostly come from Franky or need to be communicated to Franky

The fancy, highly specific words related to books and information and all that are a mix of Grand Line and West Blue, because they mostly come from Robin, who learned the fancy words from books in West Blue and the more practical words avoiding bounty hunters in the Grand Line. There’s also a fair amount of polite phrases from Brook, that are used in the same way phrases like gochisousama deshita are used in Japanese, ie the literal meaning isn’t really the point

The crew each have their own favorite swears and insults in North Blue, and some will tack on fancy modifiers from High North Blue when they’re feeling particularly offended

Medical equipment is referred to by the words used in the Drum/Sakura Kingdom, which is technically Grand Line but is nearly unintelligible due to the isolation and specification of the doctors there

Hilariously enough, Law and Chopper have the worst time communicating, because they each think the other can’t speak Grand Line for shit and no one has told them that actually they’re both right because Chopper’s medical Grand Line is basically what thick Scots sounds like to West Coast Americans and Law learned his medical Grand Line from books

Luffy has the worst time of it because his native language is a highly personalized bastard mix of Goa Hightown, Goa Edgetown, and East Blue (bandit edition) along with the East Blue and Grand Line Marine dialects plus whatever Shanks taught him in Grand Line, and he isn’t exactly gifted with language. He understands about 85-90% of what people say to him at any given time, unless it’s exclusively East Blue at a not fast pace. On the other hand, he and Ace are very fluent with each other and very hard for anyone else to understand once they get going in their personal shipspeak

After the timeskip, Luffy is much more fluent in Grand Line, due to spending time with Rayleigh speaking nothing but Grand Line (and speaking the ASL shipspeak. It’s one of the few things he refuses to forget, and if he’s learned one thing it’s to not take what he has left for granted)
