how to win at college
this also applies to high school in a lot of ways, esp in organization and involvement
I read this book by cal newport called “how to win at college” in prep for my freshman year & u should definitely read it yourself because there are lots of important points i don’t cover in this post, but if you don’t want to, this is my summary of what I think were the most important points he made.
STUDY HARD, BUT YOUR GRADES DON’T MEAN AS MUCH AS WHAT YOU LEARN OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM. he prioritizes getting vital experiences such as
- joining a club and eventually taking responsibility in it and becoming a leader
- apply for scholarships every year (he said 10 a year)
- volunteer, but not for your resume. do it to learn and become a better person.
- get involved in research, and get involved in your major department (like go to the events and lectures, even if they aren’t mandatory)
- write outside of class regularly because writing is super important (example- submit to your school newspaper)
STAY ORGANIZED AND ON TOP OF YOUR SHIT
- he really really REALLY emphasizes not procrastinating and studying / starting papers well in advance of deadlines. his rules are to
- - >start long term projects immediately after they are assigned and continue to work on them by following a reasonable schedule (he says to finish early, revise, then finish again),
- - > take 3 days to write shorter papers (aka you have abt 2 weeks to work on them and they range from 2-15ish pages) (aka make preparations pre writing, then write a rough draft on the first day, revise and focus your writing on the second day (make sure your arguments are very clear!), and polish your paper on the third day), and
- - >take 2 weeks to study for an exam. study in shorter blocks during the first week, like maybe an hour or so each day. over the weekend, add more hours. the few days before the test, study in 2-3 hour chunks to really cement the already familiar information.
- get a filing cabinet for your papers instead of just piling them on your desk and having to search for them later.
- have a HIGH QUALITY notebook and a folder for each class (or whatever stationery keeps you organized) and keep all your folders/notebooks/binders neat and organized.
- empty your inbox and organize your emails
- schedule your free time- aka have specific times that you choose to relax and spend with friends rather than unintentionally relaxing during work time, or worrying about work during relaxation time.
TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF
- you NEED sleep, you NEED healthy food, and you NEED exercise. you really shouldn’t put anything ahead of these things.
- NEVER pull an all nighter. if you’re studying ahead of time, this should be easy. all nighters aren’t glamorous, they’re unproductive, really stressful, and unhealthy
- keep in touch with old friends, and remember to call your mom
- make sure to spend time with new friends and take care of them. be there for your friends.
- keep your room neat and make your bed!!
like i said, there is a lot of important stuff that I didn’t cover so i recommend reading the book how to win at college by cal newport, and take what you need to from it. good luck!!!

a huge part of studying is recalling items you learned. after a lecture or reading the textbook, recalling the main idea helps later on in understanding the topic as your brain contextualizes what you’ve learned and strengthens your memory of the topic

Hey Everyone!
Oof, It’s been quite a while- I’ve been in France! To sum it up, it was amazing.. but this isn’t a lifestyles blog, it’s a studyblr.
So.. I’m finally a Senior! With that, though, I have a ton of new courses to prep for. Here they are:
AP Literature and Composition
AP Calculus B
AP US Government and Politics (half year course)
Enriched Economics (half year course)
Regents Physics (snooze, the school wasn’t offering AP this year)
French- College Level (and I’ll be challenging the exam)
Some assorted, required computer skills/resumé building classes
I literally have a full schedule but I’m enlisted in classes I’m actually interested in. I know I said I’ll make a masterpost of college/major/passion stuff- and it’s in the works but I have a ton of summer work to get started on. See you soon!

Hey Emma, any advice for someone who didn't get into the uni they wanted?
Hey! I think the first step is to grieve in your own way - it sounds kind of silly, but it can be hard having that application denied. You can have a bit of time for self-pity, as long as you do make the effort pick yourself up! That being said, sometimes being rejected (I feel this is a harsh word for it) can be a good thing. Maybe or maybe not in your case, you could be looking at your dream uni with rose-tinted glasses. You might think it is perfect for you but when in reality, it might not have been the best fit anyway. If you have other options or offers that you’ve considered and accepted, then that is awesome! The original school is missing out on you. But, university can be what you make of it. Going to a different school could be the best thing you’ve done. A year in and you might never think of your previous dream university again. You might even find that you can’t picture yourself actually going there because you love your new uni so much more. If you think about it, in some ways it could be a blessing. Yes, it sucks but you may have only been denied for a small reason. I am sure the people going through applicants have an idea of who fits best and perhaps they see you as someone who would fit another university best. I really don’t see the process being as cut and dry as pure grades. This sounds a bit odd, but even if it is your dream, it doesn’t always mean it would have been right! Plus, if you went somewhere and still wanted to get into your first choice, transferring at a later stage is always a possibility. It doesn’t mean the door is closed forever! I hope this helps. If anyone else has their story/experience of choosing universities, attending one that wasn’t their ideal, please share! xxx

“I’d rather be around a passionate nerd than a non-passionate cool person. Because if you lack passion, your soul is diminishing by the second. You have to be passionate about something. Call it obsessed or whatever you want, but be obsessed about something. Obsessed people care. I’m passionate about so many things, it becomes an issue at certain points, but at least you have the ability to feel that much about something.”

Hey there! Welcome and don’t be afraid to ask anyone in the community questions!
Tumblr media
Joining the studyblr community because I have realized how much motivation can come out of this community and I wish to motivate people as well. I’m a senior in high school and will soon be entering college with a biochemistry major so I know I need all the motivation I can get.
My two all time favorites are @studydiaryofamedstudent and @elkstudies

Why do you want to go to Princeton? Why not another Ivy League and specifically Princeton? If it’s prestige you’re looking for, there’s plenty of other schools that can offer that besides Princeton.
Alrighty- so piece of advice to y’all:The Ivy League is a really old division I football organization. That’s it. The schools only became prestigious as a result of the hype about said football league. So I more than completely agree with anon on that one, there are other schools that are just as good if not better- it all depends on where you think you fit in best.
Which leads me to my answer:I fell in love with the atmosphere the campus gives off. When I visited, it felt like home to me. It’s a weird sorta hard-to-explain feeling but it’s true. The focus on undergraduates is amazing, allowing concentrations in neuro to be possible as opposed to bio or premed programs in other undergrad colleges. It is primarily a research-based university, so depending on where my passions in neuroscience go, either clinical or research, there’s a good chance I may have to apply to another school in 4 years but I still adore what the school has to offer
The Princeton Neuroscience Institute is an entire building on campus solely dedicated to brains and innovation. There is an incredible amount of funding and resources that gets put into this institute and its specific to neuro, once again, over a “biology” institute or other science-related research center with a subsidiary neuroscience department.
It’s about an hour away from both Philadelphia, PA and NYC so I’d have two major cities for job opportunities and not to mention the numerous connections to be made through studying under renowned professors and researchers.
Aside from Princeton’s endless qualifications, I feel it’s where I’d genuinely gain things from. I’m around the average student, if not a bit below in terms of SAT, ACT, GPA, etc, and that’s how I want it. I don’t want to be the smartest in the class (PSA: NUMBERS DO NOT DETERMINE YOUR INTELLIGENCE I’M USING THIS IN A WAY THAT MAKES SENSE!!!!) I don’t want to feel like I’m not being challenged and I’d give up having a 4.0 GPA in college if it means actually learning things and being pushing in my classes. The local colleges leave me upwards of the 85th percentile and honestly, I’m sick of that. I’m ready to move onto things that will drive me to want to work hard, and have to work hard, to achieve what I want, and I think Princeton, as well as other schools of the same caliber can offer that to me.
Thanks for asking me this- It really made me pause and reflect on my direction in life and I hope this helps! Also, for those who still have no idea how to find a college that’s good for you, I’ll be making a masterpost/advice thing sometime soon!

If you think you’re doing as much as you can when you study and your grades don’t reflect the effort you’re putting in, these tips might be the key
keep your energy up: it’s no use studying if you’re too tired to process the information, after all so before you start studying make sure that you aren’t feeling sluggish or tired. To combat this, I recommend:
exercise: do 10 pushups, jumping jacks, or dance around for a few minutes before you start working or anytime you catch yourself drifting
eat something: one of the best things to do if you’re sluggish is to drink water. Keep water by you while you study and eat some healthy foods like apples, bananas, and almonds.
be smart about where you study: don’t study in bed!!!! Your brain associates your bed with sleep and you will feel tired if you study in bed. Find a quiet, well lit area with lots of room for the most effective studying. Make sure you have water (and food) on hand. The ambiance of where you study is also very important:
don’t listen to music: you might think that you study better when listening to music, but  you don’t. It’s been proven that listening to music while working is a form of multitasking, which slows down your efficiency. If you really want to listen to music, listen to instrumental music or songs you don’t know and a low volume. I personally like listening to ambiance noises when I’m studying.
lighting is important: a dark studying environment isn’t helpful for obvious reasons. Turn on a lamp to keep you awake and alert. (Make sure you turn the brightness down on your electronics, though. The strain put on your eyes by bright blue light does more harm than good).
draw up a plan: have 3 subjects to study for? It looks a lot less daunting if you break it up into manageable chunks. Maybe decide to study chemistry for 30 minutes then move on to math for an hour. Plan this out several days in advance so that you can have something of a weekly schedule. Beyond that, plan how you’re going to study for the subject. For example, plan to read your math notes then do a practice quiz instead of just giving an amount of time.
put away distractions: all the studying advice in the world can’t help you if you’re getting distracted every few minutes by your phone. Put it in another room or with your parents or use an app to block procrastination. Close extra tabs, clear clutter from your study space, and turn off your notifications. Be ruthless in clearing away distractions.
study smart: I’ve talked about this before, but being an active studyer is way more helpful than being passive. Passive studying is reading your textbook or notes without engaging in any other way. A way to actively study a textbook could be to highlight as you go through or to take notes. The best ways to actively study are to teach someone else and to do practice tests (some more examples are making study guides and working out problems out loud).
understanding is key: understanding the material goes a long way in preparing you because pure memorization without understanding is how people study for hours and still fail. A good rule of thumb to see if you understand a topic is if you can teach it, you know it. However, with things you need to memorize like formulas and vocabulary, study those (my favorite way is to create acrostics) a little every day.
use different methods for one topic: even if you’re actively studying, using one method can become horribly monotonous. Plus, if you attack from all angles you have a much better chance at understanding. Make flashcards to go along with notes, draw charts and diagrams, and make mind maps.
watch videos and get outside help: there are a lot of credible websites out there like Khan Academy and Crash Course if you need an extra lesson on a topic you haven’t quite mastered.
take breaks: space out your studying! Maybe later I’ll make a post on how to cram, but a big reason cramming isn’t as advantageous is that you can’t break up your studying. 15 minutes every day is a lot of cumulative studying and way better than studying 3 hours in a panic the day before. Taking breaks during a longer studying session is also helpful. I like to utilize the pomodoro method, which is longer study sessions broken up by short breaks.
join a study group: study groups or study buddies can be super helpful in understanding material, as the other people are learning with you. Then might explain it in a way that makes more sense to you, or you might test your understanding by explaining something to them. Make sure you actually study though, it’s all to easy to lose a few hours to messing around on your phones together. Keep each other in check, don’t be enablers
