THE BOSCOMBE VALLEY MYSTERY part 3 - read part 1 and part 2 first! What's a detective to do when his perceived invulnerability is tied to his unknowability, etc etc
Some lines are recontextualized from the (frankly wild) opening of THE CREEPING MAN - "He was a man of habits, narrow and concentrated habits, and I had become one of them. As an institution I was like the violin, the shag tobacco, the old black pipe, the index books, and others perhaps less excusable."
THE DYING DETECTIVE is next...

the BOSCOMBE VALLEY MYSTERY part 2 - part 1 here - there is a mention of Holmes reading Petrarch in this story and so naturally I went on a deep dive of some of the most TRAGIC AND ROMANTIC POETRY ABOUT DOOMED LOVE I HAVE EVER READ. BUDDY.
the 'deductions and inferences' bit I drew ages ago so it's in a different style! classic bitch moment.
One more part to come! This is in the Watson's Sketchbook series.

THE MAN WITH THE TWISTED LIP part one - I really love this story, there are so many interesting parts. Making Isa a woman because it's a gender neutral name and I can do what I want. She and Kate are not legally married, of course, but they had a small ceremony a few years ago, to which Mary was invited, and they live together as companions. CW for drugs as well!
part two to come soon.
ALSO - I'm going to be at Flamecon in NYC on 8/17 and 8/18, table D41, and I will have copies of Watson's Sketchbook vol 1 for sale (I'll put it up for sale online after the con, probably early September). Please please please come talk to me about Sherlock Holmes :)

A SCANDAL IN BOHEMIA part 1 - the opening to this story is SO MUCH and almost all of these lines are directly pulled from it. I truly cannot fathom a heterosexual explanation for being this weird and tense with your best friend because he got married.
I based the King of Bohemia's design directly on Sidney Paget's goofy ass drawing of him:

INTERLUDE - in which everyone goes to various clubs and no one has a good time.
This is part of the Watson's Sketchbook series and really will only make sense in context of previous updates!
The text of Holmes' letter is almost entirely pulled from the ABSOLUTELY BRUTAL opening of A SCANDAL IN BOHEMIA:
It was not that he felt any emotion akin to love for Irene Adler. All emotions, and that one particularly, were abhorrent to his cold, precise but admirably balanced mind. He was, I take it, the most perfect reasoning and observing machine that the world has seen, but as a lover he would have placed himself in a false position. He never spoke of the softer passions, save with a gibe and a sneer. They were admirable things for the observer—excellent for drawing the veil from men’s motives and actions. But for the trained reasoner to admit such intrusions into his own delicate and finely adjusted temperament was to introduce a distracting factor which might throw a doubt upon all his mental results. Grit in a sensitive instrument, or a crack in one of his own high-power lenses, would not be more disturbing than a strong emotion in a nature such as his.

Picture me drawing this in a hotel bar in Michigan. Watson’s Sketchbook has returned with THE CARDBOARD BOX!
I chose to put this right after SIGN OF THE FOUR because of Holmes’s magnificently bitchy “don’t even bother crediting me” moment that I felt deserved a deeper reason than dunking on Lestrade for no reason.
There’s also the quote about the potential meaninglessness of life that ends the story and is, again, weirdly poignant for a fairly ordinary case. The drawing for that quote is inspired by this Paget piece I love:

CHARLES AUGUSTUS MILVERTON part 4 - death of a blackmailer
(part 1) (part 2) (part 3)
content warnings for: guns, blood, death. which you are *probably* expecting if you know how this story goes in canon, although this version is...not exactly how Watson told it to the Strand.

THE ADVENTURE OF CHARLES AUGUSTUS MILVERTON - part one of several, because this is one of my favorite Holmes stories! Ever since I read it I had a feeling there was something more...personal...going on with Holmes's hatred for Milverton than simply a principled stand against blackmail. A lot of this is directly pulled from the books but of course I took it in my own direction!
This is in the Watson's sketchbook series, and specifically references the Hound of the Baskervilles entry in that series :)
also thank you to my friend Phoenix for reading this when it was in sketch phase and reassuring me that it made sense!
Milverton design under the cut:

watson says he has a 'touch of Mr. Pickwick about him' so I tried to do Pickwick but...scary

THE VALLEY OF FEAR part one tbh there are so many iconic lines in this one (“you are scintillating this morning, Watson”) (“One more coruscation, my dear Watson - yet another brain-wave!”) it’s obnoxious

Doodles for THE ADVENTURE OF THE YELLOW FACE (a title which has NOT aged particularly well but is referring to a weird wax mask) - in which Holmes fails to both come up with the correct solution AND to make a confession to his friend.

MYCROFT INTERLUDE - an imagined conversation between Holmes and Mycroft in 1888, after the events of the Greek Interpreter, when Watson and Mycroft meet for the first time. I was thinking about the 1885 Labouchere Amendment and Mycroft being protective of his younger brother.
