Guess who's accidentally been writing a 40 page plus analysis of the entire Holmes canon with a new chronology based on the premise that Watson was a big fat liar and invented two of the most famous stories purely to see if someone might catch him out and therefore the game was all about how much Watson can get away with although it started out on the fact that he only wanted to hide his and Holmes' relationship then it spiralled and still got a LOT more to write but have no idea what to do with it when it's finished?????

Okay but of all the stories Watson could pen why tf would he choose The Engineers Thumb 😭😭 absolutely fuckall happened. Dude showed up without a finger, told them an insane story from the POV of one of those ugly stress toys that get exploded in hydraulic press tiktok bot videos, and...? That's it 💀 they tried to find the criminals and the MFS already burnt the house down and escaped. The only thing Holmes deduced was that the murderers don't live eight miles from the station but actually just two feet. No payoff. Victor didn't even get his money. 90% of it was a grwm storytime while my doctor sews up my finger and I tell you about the time I almost got flat stanleyed. The titular thumb wasn't even there.

Direct quote from A Study in Scarlet: "Holmes was certainly not a difficult man to live with. He was quiet in his ways, and his habits were regular."

And yet nearly every adaptation (especially the more modern ones) play into the 'arsehole genius' trope and make Holmes a bad housemate.

I cannot accept 'bad housemate' Sherlock. Not when the first conversation he ever has with Watson is when he ensures that they compare habits to see if they'd be a good fit for sharing a flat.

When adapting Sherlock Holmes, I can only accept one of two things:

Holmes is genuinely a good housemate, or

Holmes is weird as hell, but there's something equally wrong with Watson to the degree that Holmes will be doing science experiments with poisons in the kitchen at 3am and all Watson does is glance at it and go "ah such quiet habits, I'm so lucky to have found such a good and reasonable housemate".

I do find it rather unfortunate, that of seventy-four thousand fics under the tag Sherlock Holmes/John Watson, 67,000 of them are specifically surrounding the BBC Sherlock series.

That's literally (over) ninety percent of all johnlock content right there

Though I do appreciate them in their own right,

Gimme more Victorian johnlock

Gimme more flowery language and old english

Gimme more period-typical homophobia (let me explain)

Give me "loving you would mean destruction for us both, but I'd gladly burn if it meant I remained by your side"

Give me devout adoration despite the consequences

Give me unconditional love in a world where it is deemed unholy

Give me hesitation and fear, because if one of us expresses our feelings and they are unreturned, then the other could simply turn me away and potentially even ruin my life and reputation, but if he loves me back then we might be able to be happy, together

Give me the dillema, to risk safety over happiness

THE ADVENTURE OF CHARLES AUGUSTUS MILVERTON - part one of several, because this is one of my favorite Holmes stories! Ever since I read it I had a feeling there was something more...personal...going on with Holmes's hatred for Milverton than simply a principled stand against blackmail. A lot of this is directly pulled from the books but of course I took it in my own direction!

This is in the Watson's sketchbook series, and specifically references the Hound of the Baskervilles entry in that series :)

I feel like no one ever talks about the one scene in Study in Scarlet where we find out that before Watson met Holmes he was, in fact, a FAN OF DETECTIVE FICTION?? He got insulted when Holmes started hating on Dupin and Lecoq. He had faves. The FIRST thing he told Holmes when old dude said he was a detective was "oh like my blorbos! :D" and Holmes told him "your blorbos are shit". Like we talk about Watson being enamored and a d1 glazer all the time but we don't talk about the fact that he MANIFESTED ts into his life. Soulmated so hard that Holmes was his favorite genre before he even met him.
