Commander Evfra de Tershaav

“I wake up every morning to fight a war.”

Evfra shot a sideways glare at the poster on the tavetaan (social place) wall, across from the poster of one of their best soldiers - Jaal ama Darav. 

Those aliens had better not get them killed, Evfra thought. I lose enough people without them flying off with unknown agents. Their eyes flicked back to their own poster as Velo deposited a plate on the table with a warm smile. The wyraav (meal) smelled delicious, even if they did have to eat it with an image of themselves from a broadcast recorded three years ago glaring down at them. 

The slender angara’s affection rolled through their taosovos (sharing of emotions using bioelectricity) as their hands met around the cup of garpana (an edible orange fruit) juice. The tension in Evfra’s shoulders eased a fraction as they responded in kind, nodding slightly, but that was all. Velo understood, that was part of why they’d been together for over a year. For now, Evfra had a war to fight.

Jaal ama Darav - Havarl

"We don't strive to make the future better. We fight because the present is lacking."

Jaal's intense blue eyes scan slowly across the poster, tacked to the wall of the tavetaan (social place) on Aya.

"I don't mind being called a hero. I am helping to save my people. It reminds us why we fight, why we bear the loss of the Kapisholaon (Disappeared). Why we fight to save our children from the same pain."

This is the third time they've seen this poster, but it still sends a shiver of pride crackling into their tsidvfirra (bioelectricity). It's determination that's etched across the broad curves of Jaal's face though.

"Yes," Jaal nods decisively, arms crossed over his chest. "We fight."

A few starter word lists are up on AO3! These are far from comprehensive or complete at the moment, so if you have a word you'd love to see, send in an ask!

In many cases, the same word can serve as a noun and adjective. When the noun then refers to a person, the most common affixes are 'en' 'in' or 'an' as seen with voneraan, or 'gara' for people, as with binnwgara.

Based on origin or species

angara - civilized people, or those who have put down roots; Angara is also the name of the race of sentient people native to Andromeda/Jave Jarevaon; lit. anchor people

Jardaan - Origin unknown. Advanced sentient race that created the angara, and likely created other species in the same galaxy

milygara - alien people; typically exclusive of the Kett, originated after interactions with the Milky Way species; amalgation of milky-way-people

tehet - kett, the invaders and enslavers of the angara in Jave Jarevaon

vesagara - uprooted people, or exiles, a derogatory term used by the Roekaar for individuals from the Milky Way

Based on activity, job, or role

drokaalen - connecter; the angara term for the 'Remnant' technology and people; originated pre-discovery of the Jaardaan

evfra - a person who causes change, alteration

frakiin - a killer, person who kills

Gosavar - The Resistance; lit. “to grasp against” “to resist”

Heskaarl - special forces, an elite angaran military group, comparable to human N7s. Also refers to a singular member of that group; lit. “the strong strike”

hidduun - savior, rescuer

nasen - protector, guardian

suupara or suupen - superman; ‘most person,’ the literal translation of ‘superman’

uniohmmen - diplomat, negotiator; lit. together speak

voneraan - astronomer; lit. one who searches stars

vesoan - explorer, wanderer

wavooan - fish, swimmer; generally used for any swimming organism

yabe, yabej - the leader, person in charge

I feel like you must have answered this before but I can't find it anywhere so I'll just ask: What's the Angaran greeting, "Stars and skies", in Shelesh? They say it all the time but I can't find it in Shelesh anywhere.......

"Neranj tev haavolanj!"

At least as far as my own work goes! I don't think it's used as a greeting so much as an exclamation though.

I've also got "Sleep with the stars" -- Sleefim'do tev neranj, and "****ing stars!" -- Skkutja neranj! and "Black star!" -- Pivos nera! as curses. There are a few more intimate phrases that I've used stars for as well...😁

okoli, oko - n - hello, hi; a casual greeting. Original meaning us unknown, but related to ohmor, to speak.

ishar, isha, isham, ishat - v - goodbye, farewell, to part ways.

"Isha, Ryder. Sleefim'do tev neranj."

"Farewell, Ryder. Sleep with the stars."

[Farewell, Ryder. (You) will sleep+command with the stars.]

'Sleep with the stars' is a traditional angaran saying similar to 'Sweet Dreams.' The fact that it's phrased as a command may seem strange, but it comes from the fact that those saying it would be caring, protective family members. They have an active interest in your wellbeing, even while asleep! We often do the same when we tell someone to 'Drive safe!' or 'Sleep well.'

Hi! I'm writing my fic "The Shape of Stardust" where Ryder is a mute character who communicates through sign language. What would the angara call that? I'm thinking like hand-speak or something like hand-songs but I have no clue how to translate that into Shelesh. Help? Loving the content you've got here!

Lovely topic! I didn't have a word created quite for this, so here you go with a shiny new one. I imagine there would be some challenges of translation between human hands and angaran hands too...

I don't have access to the game anymore but I'm writing an AU story that follows the game plot and thus partially takes place on Aya, and I can't remember the name of the hostels the Angara keep, like on Voeld, for travelers, and I couldn't find it anywhere in your posts. Do you recall the Shelesh word for hostel?

The image shows a few rough examples of what angaran eggs might look like, based on various people in Mass Effect Andromeda. Oogomji (eggs) are colorful ovals with a thin, flexible, rubbery shell. Their shell is mottled with the same color and patterns as the angara producing the eggs. 

It’s been a joy and a challenge to create sensible and interesting words surrounding angaran reproduction and sex.
