Hello! This was supposed to be a comment under your big post about Philip, but it turned out too big, so I'm making it a separate request, if you don't mind. I want to say right away that I don't mean any insults to you or your opinion, I just want to express myself and I'm sorry if I inadvertently upset you with something, I really didn't mean to.
Very cool analysis and I actually agree with a lot of it, especially as a Belos/Philip fan. But I also have something that puzzles me. I agree with the idea that our interpretation of a character can differ from what the author originally intended and that's totally fine, fandoms have always been famous for creating their own interpretations of a character, AUs, etc., but I don't think that because our interpretation of a character differs from what was intended, we have come to hate/insult the author. I mean, I can understand the frustration over Philip's wasted potential, I feel the same way, but I feel like you're making too many assumptions about what Dana intended. Yes, she wanted Philip to be everything Luz was against, the antithesis, that's why he's an antagonist. But at the same time, she also didn't make him one-dimensional, we were given, at least partially and in hints, his backstory, his motivations, rooted in puritanism, and while they didn't choose to focus on it, I think it's pretty clear that Dana really intended for him to be more than just plain evil. It's a shame he wasn't explored that much and integrated into plot more, but that wasn't the intention of the show, and Belos served as a great antagonist and villain, so I don't see anything wrong with using him that way, nor is there anything wrong with his canonical characterization (before season 3), because that's what got me interested in him. I agree with all the criticism of season 3, but because of the context it was made in I do think it could have been a lot better if it wasn't limited to just 3 episodes, albeit long ones, there was too much to cover and it's a shame they made Belos completely focused on revenge, but I don't think that just because the writer made her villain a complete villain that it proves in any way that her heart is rooted in pure hatred, if that was the case the show wouldn't be what it is, we wouldn't have all the explanation for Belos's actions (if we consider you're saying that specifically because of Belos), let alone the other characters. And "only the young deserve understanding" is clearly not the moral the show was going for either, what about Eda, Raine, Lilith, Darius, Alador (and maybe someone else I'm forgetting)? These are all adults, the fact that Philip (the villain) wasn't given redemption doesn't make Dana some kind of hater or a bad person. I also don't like what she did with Belos in season 3 and even though it was short, I think they could have done better, but I still don't think it ruins the morals and purpose of the show in any way, just because of how they treated its antagonist(!). Sorry for this rant on a post like this, I really like your work and have been following you for a long time, but I really don't understand why you have such hatred towards Dana, yes, Belos was treated badly, yes she cared more about the other characters (and that's understandable, they are the main characters after all and he is the villain) and she really could have written Belos better in season 3, but I don't think she's full of hate, because she portrayed a villain the way she did, using her own experience and looking at him through her own lens, just like you did with your interpretation of Philip (which I love).
Again, sorry, I just like Dana's work as well as yours and I just kind of got really upset by that comment and I have OCD, so it would have killed me if I hadn't said something about it (I thought about this for several hours and finally decided to write, believe me, I really wanted to avoid dragging you into my problems).
Oh its totally fine, I completely understand that my essay turned out a little too dramatic and personal.
I wasn’t stating that Dana is a horrible person, but was expressing my resentment towards that specific decision of ending her show the way she did. I really don’t like when outcast’s are bullied, and Philip really in those circumstances felt to me like the most outcasted outcast that ever lived on the planet Earth. And it really itched in a bad way on how his arc ended, without any chance to acknowledge his point of view and kill him with at least some dignity. I don’t think he needed a redemption. He needed to die that way that would actually move characters like Hunter and Luz emotionally.
“There were other older characters that were redeemed” Eda Lilith Darius all of them act more like youg adults and are positive characters. On other hand there are Eda’s Parents, Odalia, Terra who were portrait or incompetent or evil and arcs with them weren’t closed in a actually impactful way. Hunters arc with Belos wasn’t closed. LUZ ARC WITH CAMILA (that had a build up in second season) WAS JUST IGNORED DAMN. All arc’s with a child/parent conflict where handled… Well they wasn’t. I’m not diving deeper in explanations on why it doesn’t work (too much time had past I don’t remember and feel that much for the show anyway), but it just doesn’t.
Honestly I don’t actually feel that way on any other part of Dana’s personality or her personal work or a new show shes making, I still quite enjoy them and looking forward on what she will make next. Its just that.. IF or when an old man will appear in her show next time (witch is probably unlikely) I will remember Belos’s arc. Thats all.
I don’t hate Dana, but arcs with parental/mentor figures are my bread and butter. And when they handled badly it makes me sad. But I got over it a whiiile ago for now.
Thank you for your comment, in any case I’m always don’t mind to have a nice and thoughtful discussion uwu

Feel free to ignore this ask if it makes you uncomfortable. I've gone through all your posts of Belos/Philip and I really like the way you draw and write him. In the process I have also begun to think of him in a more lighthearted characteristic, with ideas of my own about him. However during most of my time as an owl house fan I've held great dislike towards him because of his actions as a villain, and now I find it hard to reconcile my predisposed idea of him as an evil emperor with my newfound perspective of seeing him as a funny weirdo grandpa.
I really want to be able to enjoy and maybe even create something out of my newfound liking for Philip, but it just isn't working and I would hope you could provide some insight or advice. I would like to be clear I don't think you are amoral in any way for characterizing Philip the way you do, I'm just trying to get to the same wavelength you are.
I was going to answer this ask the moment I received it, but this question turned out to be more complicated than I initially thought, so I spent a few days thinking about it
You see, the attitude I developed toward Philip is the result of several events that happened to align perfectly. It’s a pretty personal story, but in short: I watched the first season of TOH spontaneously, and I didn’t feel anything toward Belos until he showed his face and started talking about how he missed home. That was the moment I started liking him because he reminded me of Goodwin
Then the third season happened, which traumatized me with its treatment of Philip. I went to read fanfics and met two girls who shared my opinion about Philip and the ending, and who later became my gfs and co-writers. We bonded over our hatred for the original show, and by throwing ideas at each other about aus and stories, we fed our shared hyperfixation. It started to feel like we understood this character better than anyone else, which makes sense because, due to the huge number of plot holes, unanswered questions in the series, and moments we simply disagreed with, Philip became about 70% our own oc in our hands. And because of the colossal amount of effort and attention we poured into him, our feelings toward him became almost parental
In the end, it all became this nuclear mix of sympathy, immense effort to refine and rework the character, personal trauma that turned Philip into my fav. And now I’m sitting here, trying to figure out how to condense this vision into a few takes...
I’ll try! Sorry for all the rambling - I’m finally getting to the point
So, here are some subjective takes on why Philip has "funny weirdo grandpa potential"! remember that this isn’t about canon Philip (because he’s an asshole) and doesn’t imply any romanticization of toxic relationships, proship, or other crap. We’re talking about those qualities of Philip that, in an alternate universe, could’ve been the foundation for interesting and healthy interactions with other characters!
1. Philip enjoys spending time with kids
It just so happened that in the show, the people Philip spends the most time with and genuinely enjoys talking to are kids - Hunter, Luz, and the Collector. Collie was Philip’s companion longer than all the grimwalkers combined. Hunter is, roughly speaking, the result of an attempt to cope with his trauma. And with Luz, Philip feels a kinship bc they’re both from Human Realm. The mere fact that all the emotionally significant people in Philip’s life are kids gives me a huge foundation to develop their relationships as a found family

2. A sneaky little cookie
Philip is a smart and sneaky cookie - he was smart enough to deceive the entire Boiling Isles, and he fools the kids more than once or twice. In my ideal world, where only ponies live, he could use his intelligence for harmless mischief - be a trickster who plays pranks on the kids, but in a friendly way! That’s what he does in Hamayun and Shadow House aus

3. The desire to be loved and to love, or found family therapy
Continuing the theme of emotional connection with kids, Ludwig has a wonderful drabble called "Golden Family," where none of the grimwalkers betray Philip, but he just couldn’t stop at one golden head. He kept making more until there were about a hundred fluffy golden heads in the castle! And these grimwalkers, with their genuine love and desire for their uncle’s attention, became a form of therapy for Philip. As a child, he wished Caleb would pay more attention to him, and now he sublimates that into caring for his nephews. This therapy ultimately softens his personality and erases his hatred for witches!
In "The Axe" (I feel like a scholar citing my own works and those of my colleagues), Philip creates Hunter because, despite Caleb being nearby, Philip isn’t satisfied with his company - the idealized image he built in his head during their separation shattered against the real Caleb, who was cold and bitter toward him. Philip needed unconditional love. He needed someone to love and live for. And he created Hunter so he wouldn’t hang himself in his own workshop (not so "funny weirdo grandpa" moment, yet very impactful)
4. Philip values family
Just appreciate the fact that Philip went through literal hell (a world full of creatures he was told horror stories about as a child) to find his brother?? Isn’t that selfless??? Isn’t that a story about love and the importance of family??? Yes, it ended badly, BUT SOMEWHERE IN ANOTHER UNIVERSE, PHILIP COULD’VE SACRIFICED HIS OWN LIFE FOR HIS FAMILY, U KNOW?
5. He’s just cool. All kids (me (even if I’m not a kid)) want a cool grandpa like that
Have you seen how Hunter looks at Philip? I just want the same thing, but without the toxicity - I’m not a big fan of spicy food, thanks
As you can see, my point is - Philip has a ton of qualities that, under different circumstances, could’ve made him that "weird but nice grandpa." Yes, some of them developed because of trauma, BUT YOU GET WHAT I MEAN. This whole text can be summed up as: "Philip could’ve been a funny weirdo grandpa if his life hadn’t gone to shit". he could have been a good person.. he could have been a hero. it's just- something went really wrong at some point
I really hope I managed to answer your question - thanks for asking it! I had a lot of fun thinking about this topic and responding to it >< good luck with your art and ideas!!✨💕

lev got a very interesting ask about how her perception of Philip became as it is now so we with Ludwing and Mila wanted to participate!^^ A little reminder for all of us on what is important for us.
PART ONE. First Impressions.

At first, I only saw his mask and his role as Hunter’s personal tormentor—not even in the actual show, but in the Confrontation animatic, where it wasn’t clear who this scary bastard in the mask was to the kid, but definitely someone important. Right away, I felt their dynamic—how the younger one refused to become a copy of the older, how the older one crushed him under his heel. I’ve always loved parent-child conflicts in stories because I feel deeply connected to that theme.
HUNTER.
So, I sat down to watch the show properly. The end of the first season and almost all of the second left me in awe. I got attached to both Hunter and Belos—though more to Hunter at first, because his sarcasm, his desperate need for approval, his feeling of being unloved—all of that resonated with me. But the moment Hunter "resolved" his conflict, my interest in him vanished. I didn’t need comfort—I needed a proper resolution, for Hunter to witness his uncle’s death. I missed the buildup from the sharp, defensive kid to this softer, calmer version. But whatever. We’re not here to talk about Hunter.
BELOS.
The first thing I noticed was his sly, mocking voice. How he provoked and teased Luz, how overwhelmingly powerful he felt to her and to us, the audience. That’s what thrilled me. Look at what he can do! What an asshole! Damn. I was drawn to his mystery, his playfulness, and most of all—his oppressive strength, experience, and charisma. Back then, I knew nothing about him, and just those traits alone made him compelling. I didn’t give a single fuck what his face looked like.
FACE REVEAL.
Then came the scene where Belos’ face was finally shown—the talk with Hunter by the portal. My brain short-circuited. THOSE CONDESCENDING TONES, THAT MANIPULATIVE NATURE. I’ve always been weak for manipulative characters, and when they’re also a parental figure? I foam at the mouth, clawing at the walls. Again, I didn’t care about his appearance—only his personality, his role, his actions, and his influence.

HOLLOW MIND.
Hollow Mind intrigued me in terms of Philip’s backstory and curse. But there still wasn’t enough information to draw conclusions. So, in the moment, I just enjoyed how menacing Belos was and how creepy his transformations were.
SEASON TWO FINALE.
I wasn’t thrilled when the charismatic villain was reduced to a near-feral state. But at the same time, given the deliciously bleak mood among the kids (I savored it, rewatching the rain scene and Luz & Co.’s return home multiple times), I hoped Season 3 would give Belos a proper ending—both for Hunter’s sake and his own arc of downfall. I wanted at least some exploration of his story, a final conversation between him and Hunter, but instead…
SEASON THREE.
Season Three was a complete letdown. My hopes were crushed, and my fears came true. Belos was turned into an animal—a stupid, vicious one that wanted nothing but to kill the kids, despite everything that had once driven him. We didn’t see his reaction to returning to the human world, to his own pitiful state—not a single second of reflection, not one coherent thought. Total character assassination. He felt like a completely different entity—simplified, just a plot device, not the same living being who had made the choices he did in Season Two.
SERIES FINALE.
The peak of this degradation was how they said goodbye to him. They stomped him into the mud. Hunter wasn’t even there—he didn’t witness his death. I watched the rest of the finale in shock and horror.
That’s it?..
The sheer hatred dripping from Belos’ sendoff. The way his attempt to understand (through the Collector) was mocked… I was stunned. It felt like watching a mother strangle her own child, then proudly brag, "Yeah, got ‘em!"
Later, I found out why it had turned out that way. Dana Terrace, the show’s creator, had designed Belos purely as a boogeyman—the face of conservatism and everything she despised. The face of that one older relative who’d never understand, never accept, never change.
Politics ruined everything, as usual.
But ironically, I never paid attention to that. Belos’ religiosity always felt superficial to me—just a tool. Turns out, the author wanted it to read as… just some old conservative religious fanatic forcing his ways onto a "progressive" world, ruining lives, and getting his comeuppance. That’s it. And all that depth in his backstory—the weariness, the loneliness, the guilt over killing someone he once loved, his protectiveness toward Luz—all of that? An accident.
The more I learned, the more betrayed I felt. Turns out, Dana and the Owl House fandom and I weren’t on the same wavelength. I thought we were going to explore complex emotions and pull something meaningful from it—that not everyone can change, but everyone deserves to be understood. Turns out, only the young deserve that. The rest can go fuck themselves and die in a ditch. The finale showed that the author’s heart is rooted in pure hatred.
PART TWO. THE FANDOM.
First, I scoured the internet for Belos and Hunter content (having learned from past mistakes, I avoided anything with shipping). I looked for fanfics, art focused on drama, symbolism—anything addressing how unsatisfying the ending was and trying to fix it.
I found “At the Dawn”. I found Lavash’s sketches and posts, even a short video about how much the finale sucked and how to salvage it. By then, it was clear there’d be no redemption arc for Belos. So he needed a proper death. And At the Dawn gave it to him—long, agonizing, and bleak. So everyone could fucking feel it.
I also devoured fics about Philip and Hunter’s conflict. I needed someone to properly close that chapter. To this day, I haven’t found it. It faded away. Though I did see a few good attempts: "Was Not the Hero", where the old man got every accusation thrown at him, and "Blunt Force Treatment", where Belos, thanks to external factors, became what he’d pretended to be—an emperor and a good uncle.
But that wasn’t enough. We weren’t ready to say goodbye to Philip just yet. So I pitched our first AU to the girls…
OUR CREATIONS.
There were so many. AUs and stories. What if Philip faced the Collector’s judgment ("Favorite Toy")? What if he won ("Pyrrhic Victory")? What if the main tragedy never happened and Caleb lived ("Axe", "Murmur", "Clean Page")? What if Philip were different ("Anarchist")? We explored countless possibilities, and in the end, we crafted our own vision.
OUR PHILIP.
Our Philip drifted further from the original with time. First, the smug grins vanished, then the self-aggrandizing—until only what we deemed the real Philip remained. Our Philip is an intelligent man with a tragic past and a rotten personality. A passionate scholar, yet broken by fate and the era he lived in. Cunning, resourceful, and cold to all but those he calls family. The Belos onscreen dissolved into a distant ghost of the past. He no longer felt like ours. All that remained was Philip—the Philip who wanders the woods searching for his brother, who builds a cult not for revenge, but to prove to himself that the Demon Realm could become his home. And now, alongside the world he hates, he has…
CALEB.

Our Caleb is nothing like the one in the show. To match Philip, he became harsher, stronger—but unlike Philip, he isn’t cut off from the world. Caleb embraces the witches’ realm, and it embraces him. While the brothers’ tragedy in the show ended at the start of Philip’s story, we… we made their saga span centuries, alive even now. And it’s no longer about revenge—it’s about what it means to live when the one person you love keeps hurting you, over and over. Our story is a deep family drama, and that’s exactly what I wanted from the start. I wanted feelings, I wanted connection. And what I once failed to find between Belos and Hunter, I found here—in the saga of the Wittebane brothers.
CONCLUSION.
In the end, Philip’s character taught me that… often, our interpretation of a creator’s work differs from their intent. That love isn’t conditional on how "good" a character is in the author’s eyes, but on what you see in them. On how much time, effort, thought, and soul you pour into understanding them—and what your opinion of them says about you as a person. Because it’s always the most ambiguous, darkest things that help us realize who we are. What moves us. What we fear, what we want. And somehow, Philip became the lens through which we studied ourselves.
So in the end, I don’t regret that our Philip and the canon one diverged. Nor do I regret the disappointment his ending made me feel. After all, everything happens for a reason. Otherwise, I’d be somewhere completely different right now.
Thank you for reading uwu

I FORGOT TO REPOST OUR CHILDREN OH NO! Here they are ><🤲🌸
honestly, I'm already ashamed of posting these endless ref-sheets! every month a new ref for characters, often for the same ones vpchkhypakhykh, so this time i will modestly call this pack "concept sheets" but these concept-lists have one, very direct designation! they made for the ARTFIGHT, in which I really want to take part this year, although I will get to it only in the middle of the month x)

hiiiiiii I just wanted to pop in and say that you have legitimately one of the coolest artstyles I have ever seen. The streaky way you paint along with your lineart, i dont know what you do to make it look so cool, but AUGH its so cool and then the way you do CHARACTER DESIGN. its sooooooo good and cool and awesome and I aspire to make art as amazing yours, anyway I hope you have a great day >:D
OMG THANK YOU I HONESTLY NEEDED TO HEAR THAT😭😭😭
My self esteem on my character design was kinda low for last few months I feel so basic😔
I would love to hear maybe you like something specific about my artstyle/designs? :,3👉👈

what amity up to in the axe au(which i started reading the english version and is off to a great start!! really like it and the art is gorgeous! ) but noticed on the ao3 thing she not listed on the chac so is she doing the usual things her parents had her doing before?
Yayyy happy you like our work thank you!!^^
What for Amity… her role in Axe au story is veeery minor but there is few things I could tell. She is in Hunter’s friend group (with August, Bosha and her girls) but only for studying and prestige (because Hunter is related to royal family after all). She actually more intact with Willow, she didn’t abandon her best friend but now their friendship is a secret. So she often disappears to hang out with Willow in the greenhouse. About Luz and Amity, probably they wont be a thing here since their interactions will be different in Ludwings writing, but I think there will be friendship for sure haha. I thought that they will put a play together on Azuras book and whole Hexsquad will be involved :3
