The more I think about it, the more I love that the big bad of The Owl House, a portal fantasy set in an absurdist nightmare, is just an old white Puritan dude.

[Phillip storms through the woods, grumbling to himself]

Phillip: Stupid Evelyn. We’ll see who’s laughing when I finally do find that key. She is dead. I cannot wait for Caleb to dump her. Then everything will go back to normal.

Mysterious voice: Come on! Go back to normal!

[Phillip frowns, hiding in a bush]

P: Who…?

[In a clearing, Alador hits an abomaton with a wrench while Darius watches, unimpressed]

Alador: Why—won’t—it—work!

Darius: Alador, our projects are due today. You’re out of time.

A: I can still make it. The battle abomaton mark 1.7 is going to knock everyone’s socks off—just you wait.

[Darius sighs, looking disappointed and sympathetic at the same time]

D: Oh, Alador. Your abominations are fine without all the mechanics. If you want to work on this in your spare time, go ahead, but for class? I get you want to change the field of abomination forever or whatever, but don’t you think for assignments you could try to just… summon a normal abomination? You’re going to embarrass yourself again.

A: [stubbornly] No, I’m not, because it’s going to work this time.

[Darius gets up to leave]

D: Whatever. I won’t say I told you so when that thing falls apart and everyone laughs.

[Alador watches him go, then resumes fiddling with the abomaton]

[In the bushes, Phillip has a revelation]

P: Oh, this is perfect. I’ll show Evelyn who can’t be a witch hunter. One witch, no one around, I don’t think he’s that good at magic… we’ll see who’s squeamish.

[In the clearing, Alador rips something out of the abomaton and throws it behind him. A squishy abomination part lands on Phillip’s head, and he freezes, eye twitching]

[Alador looks up, confused, as Phillip screams in the bush behind him]
