vetvimes parallels infodump plsss?!

WOW it's been a minute since this ask but I am FINALLY here to answer. so.

The city is a woman. The woman was a city. 

To talk about Vetvimes you do have to talk about Sybil Ramkin in some way. For all that I think a lot of the Guards books don’t do justice to her character, it’s still undeniable that she’s a vital part of Sam Vimes’ life. 

Havelock Vetinari is powerful because he commands the city. Sam Vimes is powerful because he watches the city. 

They both are the city for each other. Vetinari commands Vimes. Vimes watches Vetinari. Part of what I think makes their relationship so compelling is that neither of them could possibly share that with someone else because their ultimate life partner is the city. That’s not to say that Vimes doesn’t love Sybil or care about Young Sam more than anything, but y’know that whole phrase “how you spend your days is how you spend your life”? Sam Vimes spends his days watching the city. 

I love Sybil and I think the quote from Guards! Guards! that goes “the woman was a city” is entirely accurate in the best way possible. Sybil Ramkin is the only kind of woman Sam Vimes could ever fall in love with. A city. Vetinari is the only kind of man Vimes could commit to. His city.

I honestly feel so conflicted about Sybil Ramkin because on one hand she's obviously a fascinating character who is shown to be kind and capable and willful but on the other she's very much shunted off to the side after Guards! Guards! in a way that doesn't feel fully dealt with (caveat that I haven't read Snuff yet) -- like it honestly almost feels like Pratchett fell into the whole "oh you're sidelining a female character to make way for a m/m ship" but like. Vetvimes is not actually canon in that particular way. She is absolutely not a poorly written character and the development of her and Vimes' relationship doesn't feel illogical per se but it does feel a bit like it's missing something?

guys the friendships in lower decks are so important to me you don't understand. Boimler telling Mariner she's his best friend and her being like "yeah you've given away enough secrets shut up." Ik everyone was paralleling their names carved into the bar with spirk as part of shipping them which like. fine. but honestly I personally love the idea that kirk + spock's names were romantic and Boimler + Mariner's names weren't but that doesn't matter because it's meant to signify that they're the most important people in each other's lives.

someone talk to me about mari'lyn. Mariner affirming T'lyn's decision not just by saying her boss was a jerk but by saying she was the more logical one. T'lyn knowing how to trick Mariner into being safer when she's going through her extra self-destructive phase. Like yes it's Spirk but lesbian but it's so much more
