Hace casi dos semanas, cuando fui a ver ¡Nop! en el cine, vi el trailer de una película aparentemente de terror con mi querido Bill Skarsgård. El trailer llamaba bastante la atención, así que mi mamá y yo decidimos verla cuando se estrenara. Hoy fuimos a verla; me parece que es la primera vez que una película me hace enfadar de lo mala que fue, según mi opinión.

¿C��mo decirlo sin entrar en spoilers? Básicamente, lo que se ve en el trailer es como el primer acto de la película, que es a su vez lo mejor de esta. Acá vamos conociendo a los personajes y viendo que hay algo que no termina de tener sentido respecto a esa casita donde se encuentran hasta que, como se ve en dicho trailer, descubren la puerta secreta y comienza el terror. O debería comenzar, en teoría, si no fuera por esa extraña estructura que le dieron a la película. Creí que funcionaría, honestamente; me pareció genial al inicio, muy original. Pero no ayudó para nada al desastre que ya era la trama.

En dos ocasiones la película te lleva en un salto en el tiempo para introducir un nuevo personaje y una pizca de contexto, solo una pizca. La primera vez es un salto a unas semanas en el futuro y la segunda es unos años (no sabría decir cuántos) en el pasado. Durante el segundo acto de la película nos muestran a este nuevo personaje (Justin Long) con las cosas por las que está pasando y lo que lo lleva a cruzar su camino con la trama principal. Toda esta parte resulta más larga de lo que debería, además de desviarse un montón del tono que el acto anterior ya había establecido, por lo que toda sensación de terror que pudiese existir en mí ya había muerto para el momento en el que volvimos a la trama principal. Por otro lado, ese flashback fue mucho más corto y vago de lo necesario. Se supone que para ese momento deberían explicar más o menos qué se supone que estaba ocurriendo, qué era lo que pasaba en esa casa. Sin embargo, realmente en ningún momento entiendes si siquiera hay respuestas a estas preguntas. Se te da una explicación superficial, medio ambigua, una que podría quedar a tu interpretación y no satisface en ningún sentido.

Y el resto de la película parece más bien improvisado con un final abierto y abrupto que no ata ningún cabo. Fin. Eso es todo. Ah, ¿querías saber realmente qué rayos era el monstruo del sótano y por qué se comportaba así? ¿Querías una explicación de por qué esa casa se podía alquilar y por qué la señorita que metió a Keith y Tess el mismo día en esa casa no parecía sentir el menor interés por saber qué había pasado con ellos? ¿O por qué la única otra persona que apareció en ese vecindario sabía del monstruo? ¿O por qué rayos hay siquiera un monstruo y qué tiene que ver este con el flashback del pasado? O, yo qué sé, pasaron tantas cosas que luego no se volvieron a tocar que ya ni recuerdo. Pues triste, no sabrás nada de eso, pues la película termina sin más.

Muy buenos actores, una fotografía preciosa, eso sí se los concedo. Pero para mí esa trama no tuvo ni pies ni cabeza, luego de que apareció Justin Long la historia iba sin un rumbo fijo y nunca lo encontró. Ni siquiera daba mucho terror luego de que su personaje quedó atrapado por la trama principal, y ya las escenas gore que aparecieron eran simplemente eso, escenas medio inquietantes con varios cortes y que no causaban más que repulsión, pero no terror. Tenían una muy buena idea pero fue completamente desperdiciada, todo ese potencial tirado a la basura. Personalmente la detesté tanto que no puedo creer que a tanta gente le haya gustado. Aunque lo respeto, pero igual.

En fin, le daría una estrellita, únicamente por mi Bill y porque me gustó la actuación de la chica.

The Hunger Games movie ending scene was bad, and here’s why

Yes I’ve been thinking about this for years, no I am not done being annoyed.

I’m just going to list things off.

No scars. In the books, Katniss gets caught in the fire from the bombs dumped on the Capitol’s children. The scarring is so extensive that not even Capitol plastic surgery can fix it. She explicitly says that she looks like a half-human mutt. But the movies won’t let her be ugly, so she’s smooth-skinned here.

Katniss is wearing a dress. Throughout the narrative, Katniss only wears a dress when the Capitol is forcing her to, be that at the reaping or during the many photoshoots and interviews. Even her mockingjay wedding dress was originally something she’d been forced to wear by President Snow, and the mockingjay details were added last-minute by Cinna, after Snow gave the order. Whenever Katniss gets to pick her own clothes, even if it’s the options presented to her by the Capitol, she goes for practical trousers, and never a dress.

She’s too young. In the books, it takes over a decade for Katniss to be in a mental place where she wants kids, and adding the age of her oldest child to that, she would be in her late thirties at the youngest in this scene. But god forbid that our heroine is allowed to age.

No leg hair. You might think I’m nitpicking here, but in the first movie, they had a scene when Katniss’ legs get waxed by the beauty team, so the movie writers definitely knew about it. In the books, Katniss explicitly says that she likes her leg hair, because the longer it grows, the longer it’s been since she was under the hands of the Capitol’s beauty standards. But women in movies aren’t allowed to show leg hair, so she’s shaved smooth here.

Losing the nuance. In the book version of this moment, Katniss and Peeta are watching their children play in the meadow. But what Katniss and Peeta know, but their kids don’t, is that the children are playing on a mass grave of those who died when District 12 was bombed. Just presenting it as a perfect golden meadow completely removes the horror from this scene.
