How much does music affect our Brain and its function!

Music can be a powerful emotional tool. The sweet, somber sounds of Adele’s “Someone Like You” can bring chills—or even tears—to listeners. I have used pleasant sounds of nature—such as rain, waves on the shore, meadows or woods with birds, or music the patient finds soothing—instead of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) successfully in patients with PTSD.

As it turns out, the emotions evoked by music don’t just feel good—they’re healthy for you, too. A meta-analysis of 400 music studies found that listening to music has the ability to reduce anxiety, fight depression and boost the immune system. Clinical music therapists have even started popping up, prescribing music for everything from Alzheimer’s to autism spectrum disorder (in addition to other treatments, of course).

How music listening styles impact the brain

The researchers in this study didn’t just look at each participant’s mental health and music habits—they also looked at each participant’s neurological response to music. The researchers used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), a brain imaging technique that uses blood flow to determine which areas of the brain are active. During the brain scan, the participants listened to clips of happy, sad and fearful-sounding music.

Men who preferred to vent their negative emotions through negative music (i.e., the Discharge method) had significantly less activity in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) than the other participant groups. In contrast, women who used music to distract themselves from negative moods (i.e., the Diversion method) had increased activity in the mPFC.

What’s so important about the mPFC?

“The mPFC is active during emotion regulation,” explained the senior author of the study, Elvira Brattico. “These results show a link between music listening styles and mPFC activation, which could mean that certain listening styles have long-term effects on the brain.” What does all of this mean? When you’re fighting a bad mood, why is it sometimes healthy to listen to music and sometimes unhealthy?

Music is a coping mechanism, and—unfortunately—not all coping mechanisms are good. For instance, using venting and rumination as coping mechanisms relate positively to depression and other mood disorders. Using distraction and positive reappraisal (or “looking on the bright side”), meanwhile, is negatively correlated with depression.

So the next time you have a bad day and curl up in bed with the soft sounds of Mozart (or Taylor Swift), think to yourself—why am I listening to this music? When I’m done listening to it, will I feel better? Or worse?

Psychology Says Siblings Protect Us From Depression… YouTuber Makes Hilarious Skits.

That's one of several intriguing findings from a new study on the impact siblings have on one another. Brigham Young University professor Laura Padilla-Walker is the lead author on the research, which also sorts out the influence of siblings and the influence of parents within families.

 "Even after you account for parents' influence, siblings do matter in unique ways," said Padilla-Walker, who teaches in BYU's School of Family Life. "They give kids something that parents don't."

 Padilla-Walker's research stems from BYU's Flourishing Families Projectand will appear in the August issue of the Journal of Family Psychology. The study included 395 families with more than one child, at least one of whom was an adolescent between 10 and 14 years old. The researchers gathered a wealth of information about each family's dynamic, then followed up one year later. Statistical analyses showed that having a sister protected adolescents from feeling lonely, unloved, guilty, self-conscious and fearful. It didn't matter whether the sister was younger or older, or how far apart the siblings were agewise.

 Brothers mattered, too. The study found that having a loving sibling of either gender promoted good deeds, such as helping a neighbor or watching out for other kids at school. In fact, loving siblings fostered charitable attitudes more than loving parents did. The relationship between sibling affection and good deeds was twice as strong as that between parenting and good deeds.

 "For parents of younger kids, the message is to encourage sibling affection," said Padilla-Walker. "Once they get to adolescence, it's going to be a big protective factor."

 Many parents justifiably worry about the seemingly endless fighting between siblings. The study found hostility was indeed associated with greater risk of delinquency. Yet Padilla-Walker also sees a silver lining in the data: The fights give children a chance to learn how to make up and to regain control of their emotions, skills that come in handy down the road.

 "An absence of affection seems to be a bigger problem than high levels of conflict," Padilla-Walker said.

 A study tracking almost 300 men from the late 1930s to the present day has shed new light on the importance of the sibling bond. According to the Harvard Study of Adult Development, 93 per cent of the men who were thriving at 65 had been close to a sibling in their early life. The study also reports that poorer relationships with siblings before the age of 20 could be a predictor of depression later in life, suggesting that the longer we can sustain close sibling relationships in adulthood, the more it can benefit and protect us emotionally.

 Classic sibling dynamics often depend on what position we hold in the family. Elder children can often feel usurped when a younger one comes along and these feelings of rivalry can last well into adulthood. Many studies show that sisters tend to be closer to one another and that the worst age for bickering – regardless of gender – is when the elder child is 13 and the second-born is 10 years old. These dynamics are further complicated if stepsiblings are involved.

 ‘Constant competition may well shape our life script, leading us to filter every subsequent human interaction through the distorting prism of our original relationship with our siblings,’ says Lloyd-Elliott. ‘We’re all immersed in the unique culture of our particular home situation. Inevitably, any siblings who share that environment with us have an enormous influence on our overall experience of the world and we carry this forwards, often unconsciously, into our adult lives.’

 In childhood it is often easier to express those negative feelings, but as we grow older, we try to suppress unpleasant feelings such as envy and anger. This is why so many siblings drift apart. ‘I was close to my brother as a young girl, but when I was nine I was sent to boarding school while he went to a day school,’ says Karen, 38. ‘I was so jealous of the fact that he stayed at home, but I also felt guilty and found it easier to keep my distance rather than admit this to him.
