JOURNAL — Commit to the Bit

When Conan O'Brien cried and dribbled with regret after drinking hot sauce straight from the bottle, it was comedy gold. "Commit to the bit!" lauded Hot Ones host Sean. "I could never do that," I thought.

But in improv class today, the teacher said I had good commitment. My scene partner and I were both shivering, pretending to be cold in Antarctica. Maybe that's all it takes to "commit to the bit". Maybe it can be something as simple as shivering, so long as it helps with world-building and setting up the next action.

I'm just glad I didn't panic in class. I breathed deeply, took my time with speaking and still managed to get lots of laughs. It felt like childhood again, playing pretend, introducing monsters, fighting imaginary villains. If that's all it takes to do well in improv, I might sign up for Level 2 classes. Might. We'll see what happens...

JOURNAL — First Improv Class

I finally did it! I attended my first improv class! (Well, technically, it's my second class coz there was a taster session earlier in the year but you get what I mean...). I love the goofiness of it all. I'm glad I was able to make people laugh with my awkward impromptu speech about The Sixth Sense 🙃 I have such chaotic, clown energy bubbling inside me, which needs an appropriate outlet. My boss once told me she wanted to see more of my playful / comedic side at work. But that's the thing. Clown energy can sometimes be... disruptive, even destructive. Ask the Joker. Not always office-friendly. But I'm glad I signed up for the Beginners' Level 1 course. My goal is to finish the full 8-week term. No wimping out. Hopefully, it helps me with my creative writing skills (extremely grateful for my Highly Commended award) and performance skills, even if I don't see myself as an actor. But I do ultimately hope to become less fearful of the stage, esp. when I'm singing songs in some future show. Even though no-one's reading this, it's still great to be able to articulate things.
