Dubai Schoolism Live Workshop (6th Nov, 2015)

Yesterday was the Dubai Schoolism live workshop. I only attended one of the 2 days (the second workshop should be taking place as I am typing this). It took us a while to find the place since the Jam Jar turned out of be a warehouse and there was no indication to it except a small sign that said the Jam Jar lol.

Anyway, the first instructor was Stanley ‘Artgerm’ Lau. He showed us some of his work, some of his students’ work and before & afters (which was extremely motivating!). He talked about how to become a successful digital artist and how to grow as an artist, in general. He also discussed fanart and how to build a fanbase. I took so, so many notes. His lecture was truly inspiring.

After that was a one hour break followed by the second lecture. The second instructor was Kris Pearn. He showed us some of his storyboards and actually acted out the scenes. He was incredible; he got us laughing like crazy! He also asked us to choose one of two scenarios and had people come up and draw the storyboards one after the other till a story formed from that one image. Of course, I didn’t have the guts to actually go up there sigh.

There was a small break after Kris Pearn’s lecture and then Bobby Chiu followed. It was supposed to be Nathan Fowkes but Nathan was too sick to attend. Bobby Chiu told us how he started as an artist, how he started Schoolism and how life just seemed to be constantly pushing him down but he stayed positive and always looked at the bright side. His was positivity was so big, it was contagious! He also showed us demos of his paintings and then asked people to throw adjectives at him which he then used to draw a creature! After Bobby’s lecture I was amazed at how bright and positive he was; I didn’t think it was possible but my admiration and respect for him increased.

The whole experience was incredible. It was so informative and fun and I’m so grateful that I got this opportunity. Thank you Schoolism!

This is the last of what I can share from the gesture drawing course: Extrapolation and Story. It was incredible! I loved it and I love schoolism for providing it♡ Currently taking Fundamentals of Character Design with Stephen Silver.

Anyway, I decided to join Schoolism yesterday and it was the best decision I ever made! :’) I finished the first lesson and am looking for line of action in everything now! haha I love it!

the worst feeling about trying to draw is being a mediocre artist. You realize you’re not terrible and family and friends who can’t draw at all tell you all the time how amazing you are, but you, as the artist, have seen what amazing really is and you realize that it isn’t you.
