jojo   was   at   the   bar   with   a   few   drinks   scattered   in   front   of   her   .   she’d   only   taken   a   few   sips   from   them   out   of   KINDNESS   for   the   people   who   had   brought   them   to   her   .   she   was   far   more   occupied   with   the   snacks   .   jojo   had   successfully   DISMANTLED   an   expensive   charcuterie   board   ,   only   managing   TO   STEAL   the   chocolate   covered   pretzels   and   dried   fruits   .   while   munching   on   her   treats   ,   jojo   shared   stories   —   some   false   some   true   about   her   life   AFTER   rvu   .   they   were   either   watered   down   versions   of   her   ESCPADES   or   stolen   stories   from   a   morning   drama   she   watched   while   in   korea   .   although   she   was   LIVELY   with   her   actions   she   kept   herself   on   thin   ice   —   careful   not   to   EXPOSE   any   inkling   of   her   status   as   a   crime   boss   .   beside   her   she   noticed   a   quieter   companion   and   while   she   RESPECTED   people’s   choice   to   be   distant   .   she   couldn’t   simply   allow   people   possibly   feeling   LEFT   OUT   .   so   she   turned   towards   them   and   offered   them   a   smile   ,   ❝   hey   you   ,   ❞   she   started   while   turning   her   figure   towards   them   slightly   .   jojo   placed   a   fist   underneath   her   chin   .   ❝   do   you   not   like   me   or   something   ?   you’re   being   AWFULLY   quiet   .   ❞    

      *  𝒂  𝒔𝒄𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒂  𝒐𝒇  𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒆𝒅  𝒔𝒖𝒓𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒆  𝒇𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒔  𝒂𝒄𝒓𝒐𝒔𝒔  his  otherwise  bleached  expression,  lulling  kieran  from  his  stupor  over  the  rim  of  his  old  -  fashioned               occupied  not  by  rum  or  any  of  its  derivatives,  but  water.  fancy  that.  then,  fancy  him  not  even  being  able  to  stomach  even  that.  kieran  glances,  askance,  at  the  strait  of  appetisers  and  tidbits,  and  decides  against  his  better  inclinations.  he’ll  nurture  an  appetite  soon  enough,  he  thinks.  besides,  it  seems  almost  dastardly  of  him  to  want  to  encroach  upon  jojo’s  engagement  with  her  pretzels  and  dried  fruits   ;   for  all  her  enthusiasm,  it’s  enough  to  split  between  them  both.  she  is  as  they’ve  left  off   :   a  node  or  two   (   or  five,  he  posits  to  himself,  as  the  anecdotes  persist               the  raconteur  is  unfailingly  buoyant,  and  not  one  of  her  audience  has  become  a  stitch  impervious  to  each  detail  purveyed   )   more  gregarious,  sure,  but  her  ministrations  and  vernacular  are  not  without  the  kiss  of  pride,  of  dignity,  such  as  he  knew  her  to  carry,  even  before  they’d  gone  their  lone  ways.  ❛   if  that  were  true,  jojo,  i’d  have  taken  my  leave  aeons  ago.   ❜   mirroring  her  stance,  he  keens  into  the  interaction.   ❛   you  know,  i’d  come  into  this  shtick  thinking  i’d  moon  my  way  through,  pain  myself  with  the  ire  of  those  i’d  managed  to  incur  back  in  the  tens,  make  myself  scarce  before  the  stroganoff  and  caesar’s  wheeled  out  along  with  a  surprise  addressal  by  our  principal,  bless  him.  and  then  there’s  these  people             you,  now            that  i  can’t  seem  to  leave  behind,  because  god  knows  when  we’ll  see  each  other  again   ?   it’s  strange,  isn’t  it   ?   ❜

𝒅𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒕,   𝒍𝒖𝒄𝒂𝒔.

why  are  you  back  here  again  ?   you  made  your  clean  escape  yet  here  you  are  ,  refreshing  yourself  on  memories  you’d  rather  forget  .   a  person  you’d  rather  forget  .  so  ,   what  caused  you  to  be  drawn  back  ?   the  idea  that  your  former  companions  were  able  to  hold  down  a  stable  job  while  you  suffer  cheque  to  cheque  ?   you’re  a  fool  .

slender  digits  caressed  slicked  curls  as  he  eased  his  way  with  the  familiar  corridors  he  once  struck  chaos  upon  .   deep  breaths  seemed  to  fill  the  eerily  quiet  hallway  ,   gaze  being  drawn  to  each  dimly - lit  room  he  wandered  past  ,   praying  he  didn’t  bump  into  anyone  …   not  just  yet  .   as  much  as  he’d  portrayed  a  confident  stature  in  his  matured  years  ,   the  anxiety  riddled  teen  still  lay  beneath  the  façade  .   “  god  ,  ”   he  sighed  ,   “   what  are  you  doing  ,  luc  .  ”   his  soft  tone  directed  toward  the  glimpse  he’d  caught  of  his  own  reflection  in  a  door  ,   as  he  observed  his  attire  and  appearance  .   beaten  and  worn  .   he  really  was  the  same  ,   just  with  this  forced  ignorant  twist  .   “  just  go  home  ,   don’t  do  this  to  yourself  .  ”   and  it  really  had  been  that  easy  ,   just  like  that  he  found  himself  trailing  in  the  opposed  direction  to  those  who  ,   hopefully  ,   awaited  his  presence  . 

and  as  he  held  his  head  low  with  shame  ,   he  continued  to  linger  around  the  aching  thoughts  that  tore  away  at  him  ,   daily  .   was  he  ashamed  ?   was  he  scared  ?   was  he  in  so  much  denial  that  he  simply  couldn’t  admit  he  was  no  longer  that  bright  spirit  that  they  once  loved  ?   he  was  a  deadbeat  .   he  didn’t  deserve  to  promote  his  failing  success  whilst  others  were  able  to  proudly  hold  their  head  high  on  substantial  success  .

      *  𝒍𝒖𝒄𝒂𝒔’  𝒑𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒔,  though  seemingly  singular  only  to  him  in  the  liminal  space  he’s  retreated  to  and  ensnared  himself  in               doesn’t  fall  short  on  vivienne.  far  from  it,  really,  given  their  own  endeavour  to  be  emancipated  from  the  feelers  and  tendrils  from  ‘10   (   ever  sharp,  incisive  little  shark’s  teeth,  sitting  phantoms  on  their  skin  from  the  very  instance  they’d  lodged  a  foot  past  the  threshold  and  through  the  main  doors   )   and  though  they  might  have  conventionally  less  to  shy  from  than  lucas,  it’s  been  a  decidedly  convoluted  decade  for  them  all.  and  wherever  there  is  arbitrariness  and  an  inequitable  doling  out  of  fortune  and  misfortune  to  the  whole  lot  of  them,  there  will  have  to  be  a  corresponding  handful  of  martyrs  on  whose  shoulders  posterity,  shame  and  other  indelicacies  must  sit.  the  strictures  are  almost  too  much  to  bear.  vivienne  prefers  to  detract  from  the  entirety  of  it,  this  vicious  gambit.

      ❛   hey,  you.  feelin’  alright   ?   ❜   they  regard  lucas  with  no  less  than  a  great  measure  of  fondness,  though  the  gratification  that  writ  into  a  simper  upon  their  first  glance  of  him  now  begins  to  wean  itself  off  of  their  face.  they  are  then  solicited  to  recall  the  first  time  they’d  chanced  across  lucas  in  this  very  hallway,  then  brimming  with  freshmen  scuttling  to  their  post  -  lunch  classes               the  exuberance  and  unbridled  wonder  that  had  embraced  him  so  profoundly  and  excited  him  to  the  world.  the  despondence  that  now  seizes  his  stature.  tucking  their  hands  into  the  shallow  of  their  trouser  pockets,  they  move  to  his  side,  proffering  the  gentlest  of  nudges.  ❛   get  a  drink  with  me.  i  find  i’ve  come  into  very  few  pitfalls  which  couldn’t  be  made  more  agreeable  with  a  few  pints.  ❜   a  pause.   ❛   or,  there’s  an  empty  alcove  by  the  benches  outside,  too.  your  call,  lucas  solis.  ❜

He was late, which his wife would most certainly not be happy about, though it wasn’t as if it had been his fault that his flight had been delayed. 

(It had been his fault that he ended up in Germany over the weekend, but it was for art and recording in Hansa had been an opportunity no good producer would have passed up. Especially with an artist like-) 

No, he was getting side tracked. He needed to focus on pulling on his tie while sprinting through the greens.

Regardless, the minute he slipped into the ballroom he took a deep breath, his shoulders slumping and his head ducked as he tried to locate the closest bar. He had never really been one to deal with social events without a drink or two (or three or four…) and that rang especially true of his college days. Just running through campus had brought back a flood of memories he hadn’t really prepared him for but had made him laugh, nonetheless. 

He slid up to the bar, his hand running over his face before he mumbled his order to the bartender with a sheepish smile in thanks before he turned toward an inquisitive voice. 

“Jesus, I didn’t even recognize you!” He laughed, his voice full of tease, “let me at least finish one drink before you start, yeah?” 

      *   𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭,  𝐡𝐞'𝐬  𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐝  𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨  𝐚  𝐝𝐢𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞  𝐨𝐟  𝐡𝐢𝐬  𝐨𝐰𝐧  𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞            a  refraction  of  himself,  all  shade  and  shadow,  suffused  with  so  much  grey  but  grey  is  such  an  honest  colour,  and,  if  anything,  he’s  begun  to  wear  the  melancholy  out  of  it.  soft,  pliant  notes  hang  like  a  refrain  in  the  air,  their  ebb  and  flow  punctuating  the  steady  metronome  of  the  drumming  he’s  taken  up  against  the  pristinely  veneered  island  on  which  his  crystalline  well  of  carefully  curated  liquor  has  started  perspiring  from  his  lack  of  attention.  𝒓𝒖𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆,  as  he’s  so  uncomprehendingly  become  in  the  last  decade.  neither  here  nor  there,  clasped  between  the  proclivity  to  flee  and  this  mulish,  near  bizarre  desire  to  stay.

      a  rictus  of  apprehension  sits  easy  and  unveiled  on  his  otherwise  bleached  expression  and,  if  not  for  caspian’s  timely  intrusion,  kieran  might  have  taken  himself  up  on  the  earlier  proposition  to  abscond  and  set  his  stocks  by  more  amenable  company  elsewhere.  he  didn’t  think  he’d  be  met  with  anyone  from  his  tenure  at  rom  valley,  much  less  someone  this  dear.  a  pinprick  of  colour  peeks  out  from  beneath  his  ghoulish  guise,  and  warms  his  cheeks  something  presentable.   ❛   𝒄𝒂𝒔   ?   and  here  i  was,  thinking  i  was  done  for.  took  you  long  enough.  where’ve  you  been   ?   ❜   the  genuine,  unbidden  mirth  nearly  bruises  him  and  his  inflection              kieran  catches  himself,  looking  over  his  old  friend   ;   searching  his  face.   ❛   one  drink.  then  you  tell  me  everything.   ❜
