I want to discuss a slight issue I have with the discourse about my country (Iceland) on the internet because it seems that some people have settled into using us and other Nordic countries as examples of progressive utopias. This isn't anything new mind you; I've been seeing these examples being used for years and it's not like they are entirely untrue, we are ahead of many countries in many areas. But the problem I have with this way of thinking is that it seems to have caused politicians and some other people to become more docile, and in general some people seem to have come to a bit of a halt in actually fighting for more equality and are now very busy self-fluffing themselves for their marvellous contributions and achievements in our society. (This is just my opinion, and I know there are many exceptions to this). So I wanted to point out many issues where we as a society lack equality to try and correct the perception people seem to have of us as some social utopia. -Abusing foreign workers: http://www.ruv.is/frett/english-version-of-kveikur-released -Sexism still being accepted in some inner circles of politicians: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/06/world/europe/iceland-politicians-bar-sexist -remarks.html-Being one of the few countries left that still has a state religion:(Pic Above) -Freedom of the press: http://jakebernstein.net/journos/iceland-censors-glitnir-leak -CPS has become infamous for inaction and corruption scandals: https://stundin.is/grein/6691/thaer-kolludu-pabba-ulf/ And these are just the biggest scandals I remember over the last few years, there are many more. So my point is that being more aware of the problems in the countries you decide to compare yourself to is always healthy and maybe I'm a bit pedantic, but it's my belief at least that the fight for equality may never come to a full stop.
