#CelebratingBlackHistory - #KobeBryant (@kobebryant) • Background: Kobe Bean Bryant August 23, 1978 – January 26, 2020) was an American professional basketball player. A shooting guard, Bryant entered the National Basketball Association (NBA) directly from high school, and played his entire 20-season professional career in the league with the Los Angeles Lakers. Bryant won five NBA championships, was an 18-time All-Star, 15-time member of the All-NBA Team, 12-time member of the All-Defensive Team, was named the 2008 NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP), and was a two-time NBA Finals MVP winner. Widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, he led the NBA in scoring during two seasons, ranks fourth on the league's all-time regular season scoring and all-time postseason scoring lists. • Together with his wife, Bryant founded the Kobe and Vanessa Bryant Family Foundation (KVBFF). Its goals are "helping young people in need, encouraging the development of physical and social skills through sports and assisting the homeless". Bryant spoke of the injustice aimed at homeless people who are blamed for their situation, saying that homelessness should not be ignored or made a low priority. Bryant said he wanted more out of life than just a successful basketball career. • “I don’t think I painted Kobe Bryant the basketball legend. I hope I painted Kobe Bryant, a Los Angeles Saint.” - #mural and #quote by my bro #IsaacPelayo (@isaacpelayo).. wow man.. #CelebratingBlackHistory Artist: Elizabeth Catlett (April 15, 1915 – April 2, 2012) Background: #ElizabethCatlett was an American and Mexican graphic artist and sculptor best known for her depictions of the African-American experience in the 20th century, which often focused on the female experience. She was born and raised in Washington, D.C. to parents working in education, and was the grandchild of freed slaves. It was difficult for a black woman in this time to pursue a career as a working artist. Catlett devoted much of her career to teaching. However, a fellowship awarded to her in 1946 allowed her to travel to Mexico City, where she worked with the Taller de Gráfica Popular for twenty years and became head of the sculpture department for the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas. In the 1950s, her main means of artistic expression shifted from print to sculpture, though she never gave up the former. • Catlett's work can be found in major collections such as those of the Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art (@themuseumofmodernart), Library of Congress (@librarycongress), Minneapolis Institute of Arts, National Museum in Prague, the Toledo Museum of Art, the Clark Atlanta University Art Galleries (@cau1988), the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico, the Instituto Politécnico Nacional, Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Iowa, the June Kelly Gallery and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in New York. The Legacy Museum (@legacymuseum), which opened on April 26, 2018, displays and dramatizes the history of slavery and racism in America, and features artwork by Catlett and others. • #ArtAboveReality #LookWhatArtFound #Inspiring #Harlem #Curator #ContemporaryArt #FineArt #CollectArt #LiveWithArt #ArtConsultant #BlackArtists #BlackHistoryMonth #ModernArt #ArtHistory #ArtFuture #Pioneer #America #Mexico #BlackWomen #Activism https://www.instagram.com/p/B8JxK7hHUzA/?igshid=1qprihisu5hxv

In addition to celebrating #BlackHistory, we will also be #CelebratingBlackFuture with today’s working artists. Artist: Marlon Diggs (@marly_mcfly87) Background: Marlon Diggs is a self-taught artist from Newport News, VA living in the Washington DC area. Born in 1987 Diggs began to pursue art as a child drawing everything from cartoons, comics, action figures and athletes. Heavily influenced by artists Roy Lichtenstein, Kaws and Hebru Brantley , He pulls inspiration from old comic books and newspapers to help him display his inner thoughts and experiences through layers of bright bold colors and patterns coupled with images from his childhood. Common themes throughout his work consist of women, love, hope and the importance of minorities in comics and cartoons. Marlon’s process consists of ripping up old comic books, newspapers and magazine ads and then rearranging the pieces so that they tell a story and are transformed into a work of art. He then transforms his ideas with acrylic paint on canvas, and rather than reproducing the imagery, he documents bits and pieces of pop culture in a critically acclaimed and creative new direction. • #ArtAboveReality #LookWhatArtFound #Inspiring #Art #Curator #ContemporaryArt #FineArt #CollectArt #LiveWithArt #ArtConsultant #BlackArtists #BlackHistoryMonth #ModernArt #ArtHistory #ArtFuture (at Virginia) https://www.instagram.com/p/B8H17aLHfEj/?igshid=1iimtxldbwurd

#CelebratingBlackHistory - Just Above Midtown (JAM) 1974-1986 Background: Just Above Midtown—or JAM—was an art gallery and self-described laboratory led by #LindaGoodeBryant that foregrounded African American artists and artists of color. Open from 1974 until 1986, it was a place where black art flourished and debate was cultivated. The gallery offered early opportunities for artists now recognized as pivotal figures in late-20th-century art, including David Hammons, Butch Morris, Senga Nengudi, Lorraine O’Grady, and Howardena Pindell. Nengudi has described JAM’s energy as “vibrating,” a space where artists “were given carte blanche, and there were no restrictions.” This exhibition presents artists and artworks previously shown at JAM in a wide range of mediums, and archival material and artist interventions contextualize the experimental ethos that defined the gallery. Animated by Goode Bryant’s belief in trying to “connect us to our innate ability to use what we have to create what we need,” the gallery took what was an expansive view at the time, embracing artists working with abstraction and inexpensive materials, video and performance, as well as self-taught and West Coast artists. It organized exhibitions that explored the idea of artistic and racial mixture, encouraged collaborations between artists, and, with a steady drumbeat, offered a platform for consistent critiques of the commercialization of art. As part of their mission to build relationships with the city’s art audiences, Goode Bryant and her collaborators incorporated talks and workshops into the gallery’s programming, including The Business of Being an Artist—aimed at artists’ professional development—and Brunch with JAM, a $5 lunch series featuring lectures by artists and museum curators. This exhibition will likewise include performances, screenings, and public programs, as well as a range of collaborations. • #ArtAboveReality #LookWhatArtFound #Inspiring #Harlem #Curator #ContemporaryArt #FineArt #CollectArt #LiveWithArt #ArtConsultant #BlackArtists #BlackHistoryMonth #ModernArt #ArtHistory #ArtFuture #Pioneer #NewYorkCity (at New York, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/B8HgrBtnEeo/?igshid=6yvh6ps00y19

#CelebratingBlackHistory Artist: Horace Pippin (1888-1946) Artwork: John Brown Going To His Hanging, 1942 Background: #HoracePippin is recognized as one of the premier self-taught artists of this century. A native of West Chester, Pennsylvania, he depicted his local environment in numerous images. He also explored historical subjects, such as this homage to the fiery abolitionist John Brown. A white man who became a martyr for the anti-slavery cause, Brown occupied a special place in African-American memory throughout much of the twentieth century. Pippin depicted him as a quietly heroic figure in three separate paintings: "John Brown Reading His Bible," "The Trial of John Brown" and this image. One of the artist's most famous works, "John Brown Going to His Hanging" pictures the controversial figure on the way to his death. A crowd has gathered to watch (presumably cheer) Brown's execution, the black woman at lower right who, scowling, refuses to participate in the event. According to family legend, Pippin's grandmother was present at the hanging. By including her - the only black figure in any of the artist's history paintings - Pippin emphasized his personal connection to Brown's legacy of black liberation. This work was exhibited in and purchased from the Pennsylvania Academy's 1943 annual exhibition. - Text via @pafamuseum. • #ArtAboveReality #LookWhatArtFound #Inspiring #Art #Curator #ContemporaryArt #FineArt #CollectArt #LiveWithArt #ArtConsultant #BlackArtists #BlackHistoryMonth #ModernArt #ArtHistory #ArtFuture #Pioneer https://www.instagram.com/p/B8HLhOrHlMX/?igshid=sihcdbnobtn8

Waz Up! Y’all make sure y’all head over to @davidkordanskygallery to see the dopeness that #LaurenHalsey has put together in her newest exhibition. I’m going back to experience it again this weekend before I write my review. My first experience was just to stand there (in a art gallery) and just be black. And it worked out very damn well because everything around me gave that right back to me... it’s “The Real Deal”.. • #ArtAboveReality #LookWhatArtFound #Inspiring #Art #Curator #ContemporaryArt #FineArt #ArtMarket #ContemporaryPainting #CollectArt #ContemporaryArtCollectors #LiveWithArt #ArtConsultant #ShotOniPhone #ContemporaryArtist #ArtistsOnInstagram #WinningHabits #Pillars #Experience #architecture #blackarchitecture #experiences (at Los Angeles, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/B79PsYEHqPz/?igshid=1bp1wglx8a3tg

“There’s a struggle, especially for Black media,” Jamaal Finkley, CEO of BlackTree (@blacktreetv), said over B-roll of stars on the carpet. “The struggle is multifaceted. First, there’s the placement that we are on the carpet, which is usually we’re all bundled near the end of the carpet. Second is the publicists that represent the talent, which you’ll see in some of these videos, and third, it’s the talent themselves, who make conscious efforts or lack of effort to take time to speak to the few Black-owned media.” - via #MadameNoire • The video posted to @madamenoire really made me think of this arts industry and the constant conversation of black artists shunning or avoiding altogether black gallery spaces and museums or other spaces of color to fit in with the larger machine. We’ve seen large institutional galleries sign a plethora of black artists at extreme rates usually leading to that very community being left out of the collecting game. • We’ve also seen large publications control what voices they want to speak on black artists and spaces and try and curb the outspoken voices that desperately need their perspectives equalized with that of their non black counterparts. • Where do you begin the change? How can black spaces compete when the very communities they’re trying to serve are being abandoned for more affluent “potential” and “exposure”. Aren’t we exposed enough? Why do we want the short fame over the longtime gain? Would love your thoughts!! • #artabovereality #blackmedia #artist #grammys #grammys2020 #artcollective #blackartist #reversegentrification #fineart #business #curator #opportunity #media #TV #awards #contemporaryart (at Los Angeles, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/B76nuPmH1ti/?igshid=sltrl8s0edet

Read full review with Link In Bio.. • “Thomas and associates collectively explained what the image reveals when light is shone onto Deep South (Red Diagonal), 2019. What it shows is a promotional still from the 1975 movie “Mandingo,” in which a white woman presents a very demonstrative face while clutching the rope that is tied to the waist of a slave named “Mede” as he looks on in displeasure. The “Red Diagonal” in this work is used as a point of focus as it highlights the key elements in the image, which are the looks on the faces of the subjects contained within. I was unaware of the film until I began writing this essay. I decided to watch “Mandingo” to understand the context of the image and how it could elevate my perspective. Suddenly, I grasped the many ways that the image in this work profoundly affected how I perceived it.” - Words by Badir McCleary (LINK iN BIO) • #ArtAboveReality #LookWhatArtFound #Inspiring #Art #Curator #ContemporaryArt #FineArt #ArtMarket #ContemporaryPainting #CollectArt #BuyArt #ArtReview #LiveWithArt #ArtConsultant #ShotOniPhone #ContemporaryArtist #ArtistsOnInstagram #WinningHabits #HankWillisThomas #Mandingo #ModernMasters #Warhol #EllsworthKelly #JosefAlbers (at Kayne Griffin Corcoran) https://www.instagram.com/p/B71aX_9n3OM/?igshid=zylk6nrx8ywk
