'Shrouded Sage'

Elephants are the largest land animal on our planet. Even more impressive than their size is their intelligence and emotional connections. They can remember friends and relatives after decades of separation, they hold funerals and mourn their dead, they come together in community to raise their young and help each other.

Elephants carry a powerful earth magic in them. They are sages of the Serengeti.

'Golden Bumble'

There is no denying the importance of one of the world’s smallest creatures. While the honeybee might produce enough honey to share with us, the bumblebee is actually a more efficient pollinator. The bumbles size has always stumped scientists who postulated it should never be able to fly. Therefore they stand for dreaming the impossible dream in life.

Bumblebees were once called Humblebees by Darwin as he observed their calm nature. They teach us about responsibility, hard work and being part of something larger than ourselves. They have a golden energy.

'In the Buff'

Buffalo are earth elements. They inspire images of herds so large that the ground shakes with their numbers. Roiling dust clouds kicked up from the soil by thousands of hooves. They create thunder as they stream across the tawny fields of the great plains.

The buffalo has been held sacred to many of the native peoples of North America for centuries. They foster calmness, steadfastness, family and protection. They are formidable and strong, weighing over 1 ton each, yet they are gentle creatures.

'Pink Paradise'

Flamingos are synonymous with tropical climes, sunny skies and paradise.

They were once protected and revered by ancient Egyptians as an incarnation of the Sun God, Ra. Mayan traditions believed the flamingo was a healer of the heart and had psychic insight.

In more modern totemic readings, dreaming about 2 flamingos means good fortune and a flamingo balancing on one leg represents good news coming your way.

With Pink Paradise I could not separate the physical color from the spiritual aspect. The pink is too ingrained in their self identity.

'Turtoise'

Yes, that is spelled correctly. It is a play on the words turtle and turquoise.

Sea turtles are the ultimate zen creatures. They have a constant look of contemplation. As I gaze upon this painting I am always taken to a place of calm and warmth.

Sea turtles do not have an easy beginning, they earn that calmness. Only 1 out of a thousand hatchlings will make it to adulthood. Once hatched they must pass through a gauntlet of hungry sea birds, guided by the moon to the swells of the ocean. If they make it to the water, there are a number of other predators lying in wait for an easy meal.

They are symbolic of good luck, longevity, perseverance and protection. They live extraordinarily long lives and, in Hawaiian culture, one appearing to you is a positive omen.

I chose this serene color to evoke the feeling of calmness and tranquility. It brings to mind those warm tropical waters where the turtle makes it’s home.

The octopus is one of the most intelligent creatures on the planet and are renowned for their ability to problem solve and escape enclosures. I picked the octopus because I believe this trait of theirs shows how even the most adept creature can still become trapped by their own devices. Each sabre is different, representing a separate mental roadblock. The octopus has a tentacle wrapped around each blade, showing that while each is removable, it may come with a price of being cut. Fear keeps it trapped, blind to the fact that freedom could be achieved by readjusting it’s grasp or by approaching the problem from another way and simply rising above and leaving the cage behind.

Say hello to my eighth monochromatic friend! I had to fight the urge to name him Golden Boi, lol.

Yes, this time the outward colorings influenced his portrait, but I go with what I feel. He is completed entirely in Cadmium(free) yellow deep. I love these big fuzzy guys! They rarely sting and pose no threat. While they produce little honey (unlike their cousins the honeybee) they are actually more effective pollinators!
