I decided to stop noodling on this illustration and just post what I’ve got! Because I’ve got plenty of other things that need more attention than this haha. So I really don’t feel like I arrived at something I love in the final painting of this. I got lost in all the textures and the directionality of the light is all off, but I’m okay with it in the end. Honestly I like the simple painting and line art best, but I thought I’d post them all!! This week I challenged myself to work on props, but it’s been so pretty outside lately that I found myself doodling Carmen Miranda instead! Brandi Carlile’s newest album “By the Way, I Forgive You,” came out Friday and I’ve been absorbing it nonstop. I’m not sure how I’ve never drawn these guys! ... I can still remember discovering her voice as a teenager, feeling pierced by its truth and deeply understood in that moment. The way she sails across the break in her voice sounds like honesty. Her lyrics always weigh their words and spend them at precious expense. For every new album they release, my heart is left threadbare from being so thoroughly searched out by her poetry. Her band has left melodic landmarks in every stage of my life and I’m so changed because they answered the call. This album is the sweetest sound I know. ... Regardless of how cheesy it sounds, I think everybody has a musician whose music they’d say is their lifelong companion. Brandi is mine.
