Maned wolf. A gift for my niece 🌸🐾

This illustration is for my newborn niece—a maned wolf surrounded by the vibrant plants and fruits of its native habitat. I explored the flora of the Brazilian savanna to bring authenticity and life to the piece, hoping it feels as vivid and unique as the animal itself.

More than a gift, I see it as a small doorway to curiosity. One day, if she’s interested, she might learn about this beautiful creature and its world. For now, it’s just my way of welcoming her into life, with a little touch of nature’s magic.

Sometimes getting angrier at your art means getting better.

For the past few months I had to work with water colours which I’m not very experienced in. Every singe illustration made me so angry…

… mostly because after every mistake I had a new idea on how I could have avoided that mistake. And while I learnt to avoid some of them, I kept making new mistakes that I hadn’t made before… and which I also only figured out after they were done.

But in the end, all those mistakes and ideas add up to some very nice new skills. Level up!!

So, be angry as much as you want. Just don’t stop drawing!

the value of “Just Google It”

If you want to learn something new, chances are there’s a tutorial for it somewhere on the Internet. From foundational skills to advanced techniques, almost everything has been covered somewhere online. The trick is refining/narrowing your search terms and having the persistence to stick with it. Some things are easy to find; others take a little more digging.

When people say, “Just Google it,” they’re not brushing you off. The majority of artists have learned this way, tapping into a wealth of information that goes far beyond what any one person could provide. So, next time you’re looking for guidance, remember that Google might hold the answers you need.

Exploring art styles to overcome creative blocks.

Over the past week, I'm on a quest for studying new art tricks, re-discovering myself as an artist, and tackling art block with daily drawing and insights from fellow artists.

In a teaching course I’m currently watching, there’s a particular exercise I’ve taken up: studying, analyzing, and mimicking various art styles I’ve saved in my reference folder over the years. The goal is to apply a range of styles to one subject/character, creating a visual comparison of each approach.

Since many of the artworks in that folder are about coloring technique, and color isn’t my main focus just yet, I’ve decided to select styles that stand out more in terms of linework and shape. Styles that feel unique and recognizable even without color.

The subject is my original character Malika. And the first artwork is simply in my current art style.

I kept pushing this task along, sometimes feeling confused, uncertain, and even resistant. So the process was slow. I didn’t celebrate the pieces I finished; they didn’t feel like achievements or anything to take pride in. My focus was simply on understanding what made these styles different from my own. Yet, as I continued, I began to notice new, subtle ways of constructing the figure, working with lines, and adding accessories. That could be faster would I work on just a portrait instead.

The style I didn't have time to apply, but was planning to, is some American comics collective.

Happy Halloween 🎃 Everyone knows that black cats are the ultimate halloween mascot, so I had to draw them for this year’s spooky season. Contrary to popular belief, they’re not bad luck - unless you refuse to give them a treat or cuddle them, in which case they will seek revenge!
