"Tefnut" (2018) / digital collage - This work references the Egyptian goddess Tefnut in her lioness form, bringing water and life to the land from the Nile. Tefnut is both an Egyptian lunar goddess of moisture, humidity & water, and a solar goddess of sun & dryness (the absence of moisture). She is the daughter of the creator god Ra, mother of the twin deities Nut and Geb, and a creative force known as the 'Tongue of Ptah'. Her name itself is the root of the words for 'spit' and ‘moist’. Tefnut was both the Left (moon) and the Right (sun) Eyes of Ra, representing the heavenly sources of light. She is one of the original deities of the Ennead and known to be the first mother. - Tefnut is often depicted as a woman with a lion's head, or as a full lioness. She wears a solar disk on her head and often holds a sceptre and the ankh symbol of life. According to legend, Tefnut was thought to have gotten upset with her father and fled into Nubia, taking all of her water and moisture with her. Egypt soon dried up and was in chaos, while Tefnut rampaged through Nubia in her leonine form, in anger at her father. Eventually Ra missed her and sent Thoth and Shu who found her in Begum. Tefnut eventually made a triumphant entry back into Egypt where she went from city to city, bringing back moisture and water (known as the inundation or annual flood of the Nile), amid great rejoicing until finally she was restored to her rightful position as her father's Eye. This story explains how the goddess of moisture could also be of dryness, heat and the negative aspects of the sun.
