Thunder Bring Her Through The Ringer

Thunder roared in the distance and Odysseus looked up in the direction the noise came from. A storm was blowing in, Odysseus hoped it wasn't an angered Zeus ready to strike him and his crew down. Athena had interfered during the battle against the Cyclops they had fought in the cave the Lotus Eaters told them about something she shouldn't have done apparently as after the battle she had disappeared for months only to reappear as she crash landed on his ship as a child.

"it is a punishment from Father, for not obeying the prophecy and letting fourteen of your men die." Athena had said as Odysseus had helped her up as she transformed from her owl (owlet) form “he had said if i had a proper childhood, perhaps i’d be more obedient..." she continued. That was a month ago and Athena had been staying around Odysseus and his crew ever since then.

The crew was still trying to get use to the Goddess’s child form, occasionally treating her like a child only to be swiftly reminded she was still a Goddess. Odysseus could never forget that though even if his mentor only reach slightly below his knees now. "Captain!" Odysseus turned to look at who was calling him, it was Polites, Athena had said he had been one of the men that was supposed to die and Odysseus couldn’t have been more grateful to his Goddess’s interference even if she was punished for it. He wasn't sure what he’d do if his close friend, his brother, in everything but blood were to die.

"Yes Polites?" Odysseus asked as Polites walked over to his Captain. "The storm is getting closer to us, i don't think it's going to blow over..." Polites exclaimed worryingly. "prepare the ship for the storm and relay the information to the other fleets." ordered Odysseus “Yes Sir!" Polites said before rushing off to do as ordered.

Soon the storm rolled in bringing with it roaring thunder and bright lightning as the sea got rough with harsh waves and tides. Odysseus stood at the front of the deck making sure the crew was okay well they rode out the storm, as he and his crew braced the storm Odysseus couldn't help but wonder where Athena was. He hadn’t seen her since he first saw the storm roll in from a distant earlier that day, Odysseus called over Eurylochus to take his position of watching the crew as he went to go look for his mini mentor.

Odysseus moved to below deck to the crew sleeping quarters and storage in an attempt to find Athena, there weren't many places for her to be and it was unlikely she left without saying anything. "Athena?" Odysseus called out hoping to spot the mini Goddess, thunder roared outside the ship, “Athena?!" Odysseus called again hoping to be heard over the thunder, still no sign of the Goddess. "Captain?" a crew member asked as they tidied up the sleep quarters “if you’re looking for Lady Athena i believe i saw her at the back of the ship" the crew member continued, Odysseus gave a nod in thanks before speed walking to the back of the ship closer to the storage area.

As Odysseus got to the storage area he heard hitched breathing and muffled sobs which made him quicken his pace at the thought of one of his crew members upset or hurt. Odysseus drew near the noise and was surprised to find “Athena…?" Odysseus whispered in disbelief, why was his Goddess hiding away and crying? That didn’t seem like the Athena he grew up knowing...Another loud clap of thunder was heard outside the ship and Athena flinched sharply, it then clicked for Odysseus, Zeus was the one who turned his own daughter into a child, of course she’d be scared of thunder and lightning Goddess or not.

Odysseus kneeled down to where Athena was curled away, the small Goddess had her wings wrapped around her like a cocoon with her head between her knees as she hid between boxes. "Athena?" quietly asked Odysseus as not to startle her but it did little help as her head whipped up from her knees and she let out a whimper. Odysseus could see her teary grey eyes filled with fear, they seemed unfocused not really seeing him. Odysseus had seen that look in soldiers many times before, the owl Goddess was stuck in a flashback and Odysseus needed to ground her somehow...

Athena sat atop the flag mast of Odysseus’s ship in her owl form. When her father had turned her into a child, her owl form too did change, into one of an owlet instead of a full grown owl. It annoyed her greatly it was just another reason for Odysseus’s crew to not take her seriously anymore, even in a child like form she was still a Goddess yet Odysseus’s crew seemed to have forgotten that. Thankfully though her warrior of the mind hadn’t forgotten and still showed her respect of a Goddess.

Athena had jumped slightly and her feathers puffed as she heard thunder roar in the distance, a storm was blowing in...That was not good not just for Odysseus and his fleet but for herself as well, ever since she became a child Athena has....Found herself afraid of things she wasn't in the past, thunder and lightning being one of those things. Of course she’d never speak of the weaknesses out loud but as it stood she was not safe atop the mast so she flew down unbeknownst to any of the crew members and shifted back to her human-like form to hide below deck amongst the storage boxes.

As the storm blew in Athena couldn't help but wrap her now much smaller wings around herself in an attempt to comfort herself as lightning striked and thunder boomed outside the ship, she could feel her breathing pick up and tears prick her eyes but she could not stop the raising panic inside her as she remembered the day she interfered with the prophecy. She did not know what came over her to step in but as Polyphemus was about to hit Polites with his club she had send Odysseus into quick thought and in turn that ended up saving Polites and the other thirteen mens life.

Odysseus had then blinded and killed Polyphemus, Athena hoped her uncle wouldn't be too mad at his son’s death as Odysseus and his men truly hadn’t known the Cyclops were there until they realized too late and killed the sheep. Athena then remembered a sharp zap signalling her to return to Mount Olympus where she had faced her father’s wrath, she remembered the burning hot pain of electricity searing its way through her, as her father yelled at her for interfering with the prophecy. She remembered how loudly the thunder sounded, like it was inside her head instead of booming around the arena.

Another loud clap of thunder drew Athena out of her memories for a moment as she swore she heard someone call her name. Had father finally realized she left Mount Olympus? to drag her back up there and smite her warrior of the mind and his fleet? Thunder clashed outside once more and Athena flinched sharply before hearing her name again, this time much closer and she whipped her head from her knees to look at who called her and let out a whimper. It was hard to tell who it was as tears blurred her vision, her breathing hitched as she got the outline of her father...? And she tried to make herself even more smaller then she already was.

She better start apologizing before things got bad. "F-Father, God king...I’m sorry! I'll behave i pr-promise! Just please....Please leave my mortal and his men alone! You can do whatever you want to me—" Athena pleased before letting out an owlish screech as she felt herself being picked up. She wanted to fight it but knew it would be bad so she just left herself go limp in her father’s arms. as she felt herself being pressed against her fathers chest to hear a low rumbling coming from it, humming...Why was her father humming?

She felt herself start to calm down at hearing the humming and let out a sleepy coo as she unconsciously snuggled into her father’s chest. As she calmed down more she came to the realization it wasn’t the god king at all but Odysseus and the humming was of a lullaby she faintly remembered Odysseus singing to his son before they left for the war. Athena felt too tired to be upset at being carried by her pupil to...Somewhere as she felt Odysseus walk from the storage and sleeping quarters of the ship to the upper deck.

She soon felt herself and Odysseus lay down as she came to the realization they were in the captains cabin, she was still resting on her students chest and felt the vibrations of him humming. She couldn't help but chirp as Odysseus started petting her hair as he continued the lullaby, she found herself falling asleep safely in her friends arms completely forgetting about the storm.

Odysseus saw Athena’s breathing hitch as she looked up at him and watched as she tried to make herself smaller then she already was. As he heard her speak his heart broke, she thought he was Zeus...If her father wasn’t a god he'd have killed the man by now. Odysseus debated picking up the goddess not wanting to hurt her or himself by spooking her, Odysseus took the gamble and got an owlish screech for his troubles.

Having his ears ring was definitely the better option then either of them getting hurt. Odysseus felt Athena go limp in his arms as he held her close to his chest as he started humming a lullaby he sang to Telemachus before leaving to go to war. Odysseus heard Athena let out a cooing noise as she snuggled closer to him, he always found it funny when she let her more owl side out.

Odysseus slowly made his way out of the storage and crew sleeping quarters to his cabin. Once in his cabin he gently laid down on his bed still keeping the child goddess close to his chest as he continued the lullaby. He started petting her hair and he couldn't help but smile at Athena letting out a chirping noise as he continued the lullaby. Feeling her breathing even out as she fell asleep Odysseus couldn't help but follow his tiny mentor into Hypnos’s realm of sleep as he kept his arms safety around her, forgetting about the storm entirely.

Natalie stayed quiet, simply giving a small smile, sometimes Oliver really did remind her of him…sometimes she could easily mistake Oliver for him…there was the myth about reincarnation…
