So now let me talk about the Zelda games. They are loved by gamers all over the world. Just like the Dragonquest series, the earlier titles on the Famicom only have hiragana. Nintendo gradually started adding kanji to the games as the console generations progressed. Again, I won’t list all the games here but will list a few that are worth checking out.

次に紹介するのは世界中のファンに愛されているゼルダです。ドラゴンクエストシリーズと同じように、ファミコンの初期のタイトルにはひらがなしか書かれていません。Nintendoは、ゲーム機の世代が進むにつれて、漢字をソフトに追加し始めました。ここにすべてのゼルダのソフトをリストするわけではありませんが、私のおすすめの３つのソフトを紹介したいと思います。

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (ゼルダの伝説 時のオカリナ) for the Nintendo 64 and Nintendo 3DS

Probably the most popular title in the whole series. The Nintendo 64 version of this game has quite a bit of kanji, but shouldn’t be too much of a problem if you are at an intermediate level of Japanese. Luckily, the 3DS version has furigana written above the kanji. It is also possible to play the Nintendo 64 version of this game of the Nintendo Switch via the Japanese version of Nintendo Switch Online subscription service.

おそらくシリーズ全体で最も人気のあるソフトです。このソフトのNintendo 64版にはたくさんの漢字が使われていますが、中級レベルの日本語能力があればそれほど問題にはならないと思います。幸いなことに、3DS版には漢字にふりがなが書かれています。このソフトのNintendo64版は、日本のNintendo Switch Onlineのサービスでプレーすることも可能です。

The Legend of Zelda: The Windwaker (ゼルダの伝説 風のタクト) for the Nintendo Gamecube and Nintendo Wii U (HD Remake)

Both versions of this game have kanji with furigana written above. Probably the most polarizing title amongst fans due to the cutesy art style and cell-shaded graphics. I personally love the art style!

このソフトの両方の版には、漢字にふりがなが書かれています。可愛らしいアートスタイルとセルシェーディングのグラフィックにより、ゼルダのファンの間で賛否両論になってしまったソフトです。私は個人的にアートスタイルが気に入っています！

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild (ゼルダの伝説ブレスオブザワイルド) for the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Wii U

This game has kanji with furigana written above. It has more dialogue and a lot of NPCs to talk to compared to the older titles, so this one is highly recommended for those who want a lot of reading practice.

このソフトには、漢字にふりがなが書かれています。昔のゼルダのソフトに比べて会話が多くて、話せるNPCも多いので、日本語を沢山読む練習をしたい人におすすめです。

2. Paper Mario (マリオストーリー) for the Nintendo 64

Recommended level of Japanese: beginner (JLPT N5 or N4)

おすすめの日本語能力レベル：初級～中級　(JLPT N5、N4)

This game is considered to be the sequel to Super Mario RPG on the Super Famicom/SNES. It has mostly hiragana and very simple kanji here and there. This one would even be fun to play with children because of the cute art style and simple gameplay. This game can also be played via the Japanese version of the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service.

This is mesmerizing to watch.

I just really want to write a book (in fact, I think that I’m going to) where the protagonist is in a wheelchair. And they live in a city where there’s a group of superheroes. And there’s a big, magical, villain because of course there is.

And since they were a young child, this protagonist has wanted nothing more than to join the group of superheroes. Like they’re a huge fan of the group and they just know that it’s their destiny to join.

And one day, when wheeling through the city, they see the group of heroes fighting the villain. And they quickly wheel over and cry, “Let me help!”

But the ‘heroes’ laugh and instead make a whole bunch of ableist remarks.

And so the protagonist has to prove themselves.

And the villain is trying to warn them to stop.

But the protagonist ends up taking their footrest off of their wheelchair and they swing it. And it hits the villain in the side of the face and the villain collapses and groans in pain.

And so the protagonist proudly smiles and turns to the group of heroes.

Because they just proved that they are strong and worthy enough.

But the group of ‘heroes’ still keeps making ableist remarks.

And the protagonist is shocked.

And meanwhile, the ‘villain’ staggers to their feet and is standing next to the protagonist’ wheelchair.

And one of the ‘heroes’ goes too far when calling the protagonist the R word.

And the protagonist and the ‘villain’ just sort of glance at one another.

And the ‘villain’ is just like, “You know…I can zap them for you…if you want.”

And the protagonist hesitates and says, “Yeah, alright!”

One fried group of heroes later, the ‘villain’ says, “Why do you think that I’m always fighting them? They’re all a bunch of assholes.”

And the protagonist sadly nods and starts to wheel away.

Then:

“Hey, do you want a job?”

The protagonist turns at the villain’s remark. And the protagonist mumbles something like, “Oh, come on. I don’t need your pity.”

And the ‘villain’ is like, “Pity!? Do I look like someone who hands out pity!? I don’t pity you! I’m kind of afraid of you, to be honest! I mean…I’m going to have a giant bruise on my face because of you.”

“Yeah…sorry…”

“Water under the bridge! So, what do you say? Do you want a job?”

And the protagonist thinks about it for a minute before shrugging.

And the ‘villain’ is all excited because they’ve wanted someone to work with them for years but no mortal is allowed to ‘step into’ their lair.

And then the ‘villain’ stops and is like, “Hang on…you can’t work with me in that.”

And they gesture to the protagonist’s wheelchair.

And the protagonist is all embarrassed.

And then the villain goes, “Because we can get you a much better wheelchair! It’ll look great! And it’ll be indestructible! And it’ll have all sorts of weapons and gadgets! Hey, how do you feel about flying…?”

And all of that is literally in the first chapter and then the rest of the story follows the two going around the city like BAMFs, forcing people to stop being ableist, one way or another. And maybe it’ll have some commentary on the scale of morality and what it truly means to be a hero and what it truly means to be a villain.

Would anyone be interested in this!?

On Fanfiction

I was cruising through the net, following the cold trail of one of the periodic “Is or is not Fanfic the Ultimate Literary Evil?” arguments that crop up regularly, and I’m now bursting to make a point that I never see made by fic defenders.

We’re all familiar with the normal defenses of fic: it’s done out of love, it’s training, it’s for fun. Those are all good and valid defenses!

But they miss something. They damn with faint praise. Because the thing is, when you commit this particular Ultimate Literary Evil you’ve now told a story. And stories are powerful. The fact that it wasn’t in an original world or with original characters doesn’t necessarily make it less powerful to any given reader.

I would never have made this argument a few years ago. A few years ago I hadn’t received messages from people who were deeply touched by something I wrote in fanfic. So what if it’s only two or three or four people, and I used someone else’s world and characters? For those two or three or four people, I wrote something fucking important. You cannot tell me that isn’t a valid use of my time and expect me to feel chastened. I don’t buy it. I won’t feel ashamed. I will laugh when you call something that touches other people ‘literary masturbation.’ Apparently you’re not too up on your sex terminology.

Someone could argue that if I’d managed the same thing with original characters in an original world, it could’ve touched more people. They might be right! On the other hand, it might never have been accepted for publication, or found a market if self published, and more importantly I would never have written it because I didn’t realize I could write. The story wouldn’t have happened. Instead, thanks to fanfic being a thing, it did. And for two or three or four people it mattered. When we talk about defending fanfic, can we occasionally talk about that?

okay, but imagine:

wednesday is at the local library with her father, searching the shelves for a book uncle fester told her about dangerous animals in south america. Gomez strikes up a conversation with the elderly librarian mrs. phelps to help wednesday find what they are looking for.

“That one? Or, Mr. Addams - I’m afraid it’s been checked out.”

a squeaky wheel catches wednesday’s attention, and right past her walks a girl with an ENTIRE red-rocket wagon topped full of books. the girl carefully looks over each book and drops them carefully into the book-return

that’s when wednesday sees it - the book she’s been looking for.

wednesday walked slowly up to the girl’s wagon, and touched the cover.

“I just finished that one,” the girl says. wednesday straightens up. “It has a fascinating chapter on the red-bellied piranhas of South America.”

“We’re looking at getting one for Pugsley’s tank,” wednesday says.

“A piranha? It will eat your fish,” she said.

“I’m counting on it.”

“Is Pugsley your fish?”

“My brother.” Wednesday replied.

The girl thought a moment. “You’ll need at least a dozen - they hunt best in schools.”

wednesday just barely smiled, a single corner of her lips turning up. “I’m wednesday addams.” she said, extending a hand.

“Matilda,” the girl replied, shaking her hand. “Matilda Wormwood.”
