what annoys me about explaining evolution to people who don’t think it’s real is that everyone’s idea of how it works seems to be from this

if he was still alive I know in my heart that Terry Pratchett would have done a bit about Igors and Igorinas doing gender confirmation surgery by now. going into a lab full of bubbling vials and picking out a penis from a tank the way you pick a lobster. that one, please. you gotta be careful though because they'll really try to upsell you into getting two or three installed. people going to the clinic as pairs and just having parts swapped out for a discounted rate. maybe you actually just trade brains, that's even easier. Igorth have already been doing that thurgery for thenturieth.

Saw some lady at the train station with a long flowing white skirt, walking a dog with a long flowing white fur, and they both were glowing equally in the contre-jour light of sunshine. Had to draw a rough sketch of them and then shittily shade it on my phone so I'll remember to try to draw them later.

Unicorns of legend are often said to be only found in ancient and mysterious forests, so lovers of myth may be disappointed to find unicorns living in more mundane surroundings. But unicorns are quick to prove that the crackling call of grackles, the lacy shadows and honey scent of mesquite trees - dry grasses undulating with a distant breeze – they can be just as magical as ferny, clover-scented woods any day.

The other night husband and I were watching a documentary about the yeti where they were doing DNA analysis of samples of supposed yeti fur, and every one of them came back as bears.
Anyway, the next night we watched a thing about some pig man who is supposed to live in Vermont. People said it had claws and a pig nose but walked upright like a man. Now, I happen to know that sideshows used to shave bears and present them as pig men. So every piece of evidence they gave of this monster sounds to me like a bear with mange.
So now the running joke in our house is that everything is bears. Aliens? Bears. Loch Ness monster? Bear. Every cryptozoological mystery is just a very crafty bear.
Bears. They’re everywhere. Be wary. Anyone or anything could be a bear.

The potatoes were also used to see how well you'll do with marriage. There were many other little magic traditions for this eve, and lots had to do with marriage! People were intense about previewing their husbands/wives in the diabolical mists of the future.

Nobody told me that Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management was interesting. Whenever she mentions some type of tool or area of life, she gives an account of its development from the Stone Age (not always a correct account from the perspective of modern archaeology/anthropology, but still). If I were an 1860s newlywed I would be hooked on this book.

Princess finds a bedraggled knight wandering just outside the castle walls with no heraldry and a wilted plume (a common sign of emotional neglect in knights) and begs the queen to let her keep him. The queen warns about the dangers of adopting wild knight errants but the princess promises to take good care of him and make sure to keep him away from their domesticated knights until he’s properly adjusted. Queen finally relents once she sees his rusted kit, broken sword, and the saddest brown eyes known to man. Princess claps her hands excitedly and drags him off to the apothecary to make sure he doesn’t have worms.

When you are used to the no-nonsense, no-context approach of medieval Irish stories, trying to read Old Norse saga literature does feel kind of like you're being told a medieval story by Uncle Colm from Derry Girls.
