AROS AGAINST FATE: THE FALL HAS A FIRST CHAPTER
content notices: discussion of forced marriage, friendship, mention of suicide, family
Chapter One: Jue: Getting Out
Younger Emperor Jeilajue Haishionā Henor Serip Rian of Rāmia, named for hir royal grandfather and all three parents, could not do hir duty to the empire.
Raiqiongshē, the Elder Emperor and Jue's uncle and guardian, had announced the support of the goddess of conquest, and now they were at war, and war meant alliances needed to be solidified- which meant Jue could no longer put off betrothal. Jue could not do betrothal and certainly could not do marriage and children. Ze could not do it even for hir family and for the good of the empire and to have consorts more skilled at politics than ze ever could be. It made hir a bad Rian and a bad emperor and a bad Rāmian, but ze just… could not.
Ze had to get out of it one way or another. The best option, which was not a very good option, was to escape the palace and go on the run. Ze would have to avoid hir guards, and ze would have to learn to survive by hirself, and every step of it was going to be difficult and dangerous, but it was still hir best option.
Maybe Fiitsãn could help. He might be able to help hir escape somehow, and maybe could tell hir what ze would need to survive on hir own in the world as a disabled teenager. Anyway, Fiitsãn deserved at least a goodbye.
Ze looked at the clock. Fiitsãn would be back from school by now.
"I wish to go for a walk in the gardens," Jue announced.
Ngionah Ruol, the captain of hir guard, offered ē-zius arm to Jue.
Ze briefly thought about turning it down, but ze was in no way feeling well enough to focus on grace right now. "Thanks," ze said, and held on.
"You've been very quiet and stiff for a while," said Ngionah. "Are you okay?"
"Yes. Just tired," lied Jue, as usual.
"Okay."
They went to the gardens without talking any more.
Jue liked the gardens. Fiitsãn did not do much of it yet, but ze did not always know which parts he had worked on, so ze liked to look at hir favourite pieces and be proud of him for whatever he had helped with. It was also nice to get some open space and fresh air.
"Are you looking for your friend?" Ngionah asked quietly.
Jue nodded. Ngionah was one of the few people who knew. Raiqiongshē would never approve of a friendship between his nephew and a lowly apprentice gardener.
Fiitsãn was Jue's best friend. Fiitsãn was Jue's only friend, really, because Ngionah was just doing a job.
"I heard the news," Fiitsãn said when they found him trimming some trees. "How are you holding up?"
Ngionah stood back a respectful distance to give them some privacy.
"I can't do it." Ze was not really in a state to watch hir words for contractions, and Fiitsãn was safe, anyway.
Fiitsãn sighed- which Jue's hearing aids did not pick up, but which was obvious from his whole body- and put the clippers down. "I know."
"I need to run away."
Fiitsãn frowned. "Are you sure that's the right choice?"
"I need to get out somehow," said Jue. Ze had so far managed not to cry, but that was not going to hold much longer. "Fiitsãn… I'm scared. I'm scared I might kill myself if I can't get out some other way. I can't get married."
"Oh…" said Fiitsãn. He looked around and then reached out. "Jue… Come here."
Jue looked around too, but there was only Ngionah in sight. Ze buried hir face in Fiitsãn's halo of pink curls.
"Can you help me?" ze mumbled.
"I can't hear you," said Fiitsãn. "Wrong side. Sorry."
Jue stepped back. "No. I am sorry. I forgot. Can… Can you help me? Please?"
"Yeah," said Fiitsãn. "Of course. What do you need me to do- distract people? Maybe you could go stay with my grandparents in the city, they'd keep it quiet and look after you for a bit-"
Jue was already shaking hir head.
"Okay. Nowhere they can trace you to, right?"
Jue nodded.
"Do you… have a plan?"
"Yes," said Jue, which was barely true.
Fiitsãn raised an eyebrow.
"I will leave the palace and I will get on an airship and I will bring some money and clothes."
"Alone?" Fiitsãn said. "You could ask Captain Ruol to come with you-"
"No. Alone." Ngionah would stop hir.
"Okay," said Fiitsãn. "When do you plan to leave?"
"As soon as I can."
Except, when Jue tried to leave hir room that night, ze was locked in.
After a lot of yanking and kicking and swearing, ze threw hirself face down on hir bed and pulled hir teddy bear, Shai, out of the bag ze had been planning to take.
Ze screamed into the pillow.
Someone had found out. Had Fiitsãn told? Had Ngionah heard them talking? Was ze just that predictable?
Ze rolled over. The pillow on hir face made hir feel even more trapped.
It was lucky, too, because it meant ze could see the door opening, which ze never would have heard. Ze rapidly shoved Shai under hir covers- Shai, like Fiitsãn, was a secret. Everyone already thought Jue was childish enough because of hir trisomy 21.
It was Alokti. Out of Raiqiongshē's three consorts, they had been married the longest, but of course it was not Raiqiongshē. Of course Raiqiongshē was too busy for Jue.
She opened her mouth to speak, but in a fit of frustration, Jue turned off hir hearing aids.
"Excuse me." Neither Alokti nor Jue were very good at signing, but Jue got the message. "Turn those back on and listen to me."
Jue considered the pros and cons of continuing to ignore her, sighed heavily, and switched them back on. Ze did not want to talk to Alokti, but ze also really did not like being a problem.
"Why were you going to run away, Jeilajue?"
"I do not want to get married," Jue said. "You all know that."
"It is not as scary as it seems," Alokti said. "I was nervous when I married your uncle, and it has turned out very well. We will not put you in any danger, Jue. Each candidate has been and will continue to be thoroughly vetted."
"I want to go to bed," said Jue. "Leave me alone. Please. I am very tired."
"Should I send Attendant Seina back in to help you back into your pyjamas?"
"No," said Jue. "Do not bother ū-rein. I can do it myself." The buttons were very hard to manipulate, but ze had changed out of them, and ze could change back in. Attendant Seina did not deserve to have to get up to deal with this.
"Okay. Goodnight." She paused. "We love you, Jue. I hope you can remember that."
"I love you too," said Jue, which made everything worse, because it was true.
Ze had given up with the buttons and pulled hir embroidered tunic back on, so when ze was shaken awake, ze was mostly dressed.
Fiitsãn put a finger to his lips and handed Jue hir hearing aids and glasses.
"I'm so sorry," he said once Jue had sorted those out, passing hir a pair of daytime pants. "I didn't think you should travel alone, so I- I told Captain Ruol. I'm sorry. I never thought ē-ziu would tell the Elder Emperor. I thought ē-ziu would just go with you to keep you safe. I'm so sorry."
"I thought you trusted me."
"I do," said Fiitsãn. "I just thought, given the current political climate… But I obviously screwed up. I'm sorry. I thought we could trust ē-ziun."
"Only as far as I keep being an emperor properly," Jue said sadly. Ze had known that, but it hurt to have it confirmed.
"Anyway, you shouldn't travel alone. I'm coming with you."
"Really?" Jue would never have dared ask that of him. Fiitsãn's family was here. Fiitsãn's whole life was here, just like Jue's.
"At least until we can get you settled in somewhere safely," said Fiitsãn. "You're my best friend. Come on, we have to hurry, before they notice I stole the key to your room and lied about seeing an intruder."
"Thank you," said Jue.

how does your character relate to love? (From @aspec-ocs)
Let's take Hunter for his.
Love is for him truly unconditional. He loves, cares, acts and wants nothing in return. In fact, he won't make a confession, fearing to force feelings onto the other person, or making them feel guilty for having to reject him.
He cares about personality first and foremost and is definitely on the ace spectrum, not even thinking about 'physical things' when he falls in love.
You notice it in the way he smiles softly at the person, but he would never abandon a friend for a love interest. For him there is no allo hierarchy - like people in the past had tried to accuse him of. Friends or love interest - he will sacrifice everything for both of them.

Hello!
This is yourfaveisaplspec, the blog where you submit characters + an aplspec identity you HC them with (or is actually just canon) and I slap those characters over those flags.
There's not too many rules but here's the few:
Submit only one character at a time.
Be clear on who the character is and what source to make sure I don't get confused.
You can submit other HCs but ONLY if there's an aplspec identity within the HC submission. For example: If you submit a character is aromantic, I will not do it. But if you submit they're aromantic and aplatonic, it'll be done.
On that note, I'll only do up to 5 flags but feel free to suggest combo flags.
Obvious but do not get into arguments over any HC. It's not that serious.
A little about the mod:
We're a system (do not bring syscourse here). We collectively go by Sil and collectively use he / she / ey. We will probably not be signing off with individual member names.

is your character partnering, nonpartnering, somewhere in between? (From @aspec-ocs)
I'll answer this for a few OCs in the plot that are aspec/have relevant partnering status [e.g. opinions outside of "it's fine"].
X Goldfinch [an OC I talked about in the last post] is nonpartnering. Completely no-interest, no investment, never considered it before. Gets along with people well, but only gets friends incidentally - nonfriending otherwise as well.
Rocky Windjammer, one of X's friends and part of the supporting cast, is aromantic but has very conflicting feelings about it. Both wants a partnership but is absolutely repulsed by the idea, and struggles a fair amount with both being immensely jealous of his peers while not even being sure if it's something he wants or just thinks he wants.
Y Goldfinch, the middle child of the Goldfinches, is open to the idea of partnering, but not actively seeking it out. Hasn't tried it yet, doesn't feel compelled to.
Z Goldfinch [pronounced "Zed", by the way] is alloromantic, being a loveless asexual, and does have a partner. They just don't love them in any way. Still experiences romantic attraction, very much partnering.
Letícia Malaquías Sobral is 12 years old at the beginning of the story and has zero idea what being aspec is, never heard of it, very much fluid in being partnering or not. Bounces between complete obsession and ultra-intense crushes, texting her friends about how they'll be together forever, to thinking the boy she was into is gross, marriage is gross, I'm never doing it. She'll figure out what -flux labels are eventually.
Most of my alloace characters [and the rest of the aspecs in the cast for that matter, although there's not as many] are partnering, are actively married, or have had multiple marriages. The rest of characters that are nonpartnering are often doing so for religious reasons or just don't want to deal with another person in their life at the moment.

For the OC ask game, 9 and 16?
[Using my OC, and main character of my WIP story, Pageburner, X/Xanthe Goldfinch. X is an angel and child of the goddess of luck, fortune, and protection, The Queen. They're a highschooler and aspiring archivist for the living knowledge collection angels draw on to be all-knowing.]
9. X is a loveless aroace. They're aware that they're at the very least different than people around them, but don't think about it all that much until they're confronted with the fact of feeling differently than other people. Their palette also being the aroace flag was unintentional, but it is what it is. Colourpick for reference.
[Image ID: An aroace flag, a 5-barred flag made with shades of gold, white, and blue. /End ID]
16. It doesn't affect their life as much as you'd expect it to, really! Being loveless doesn't stop them from materially doing much of anything, and the fact so much of their family feels the same exact way prevents it from being a major conflict point. Their friends are aware of the disconnect and don't have strong opinions on it; it just gets filed with "X being weird". Being aroace isn't a major conflict point either when, as an angel of luck and protection, their societal upbringing had very little to do with any kinds of love. It's only when they come to the mortal plane that they get confronted with those normative ideals, and they treat it as an educational trip rather than something they should be engaging with. The only time feeling different from their peers comes up, it's met with their sibling, who is also loveless, reassuring them that it's normal.

Happy Storyteller Saturday! For aro awareness week I want to ask about the diversity of aromantic characters in Aros Against Fate; allosexual aromantics? Asexual aromantics? Grey aromantics? What are the different ways different characters feel about aromanticism?
:}
Halek is idemromantic and allosexual, and describes his sexuality as "flexible." He internally experiences no difference between romantic and platonic attraction, and distinguishes relationships based on what he and the other person/people agree to call them. He'll call any strong emotional attraction a crush; he also doesn't require the presence of this attraction to enter a close relationship. He is mostly romance-favourable, but he had a harmful romantic relationship when he was younger so sometimes fully-romantic relationships can make him uncomfortable. Sex is something very intimate but not romantic for him, and he has a complicated relationship with it due to past experiences. He is very passionate in his close relationships and couldn't have a casual friendship if he tried. He's in a wavership with Rovian- their partnership varies in type between romantic, queerplatonic, platonic, etc- and a queerplatonic friendship with Juraji, has a sensual and sometimes sexual relationship with his best friend Diihse, and at one point says that he has "always been in love" with his friend Ffwyn (whom he does not, currently, have a crush on). You know "not romantic not platonic but a secret third thing"? Yeah, Halek's default is the secret third thing. Being arospec and specifically alloarospec is a big part of who he is.
Rovian is greyromantic, burstromantic, and demisexual. She experiences romantic attraction in weak, inconsistent bursts, which is why her partnership with Halek is sometimes romantic and sometimes not. She's monoamorous but doesn't mind that Halek isn't. She is favourable to romance, friendship, and sex, and only experiences sexual attraction to people she has a close emotional bond with. Being aro isn't a huge part of her identity but obviously does impact the nature of her partnership. She probably does experience other forms of attraction, but not enough for her to bother defining it.
Jue is aroace; hir aromanticism and asexuality are very much intertwined. Ze doesn't experience any romantic or sexual attraction. Ze is very much romance- and sex-repulsed, which is rapidly becoming a problem, since ze's expected to marry. Ze's also probably demisensual, and is mostly touch-averse. Ze is alloplatonic, and platonic attraction is what drives hir to continually interact with and be in proximity to Lí, with whom ze ends up becoming close friends. Hir best- and until Lí only- friend is Fiitsãn, and when it comes to light that Fiitsãn has developed a crush on hir, it causes some problems. Ze is really lonely but has enormous difficulty trusting people and letting them in enough to form relationships; befriending Lí is a big step. Ze wants to be proud of being aroace, and that identity is very important to hir, but it just feels like a burden right now and ze often worries that ze's not even really aroace and it's just hir mental illness and Down syndrome (other people act like ze'll grow out of being repulsed and only hasn't yet because ze's intellectually disabled, which frustrates hir but also makes hir doubt hirself).
Lí is greyromantic, asexual, and aplatonic. They might experience a bit of romantic attraction and they're romance-favourable. They explore a soft-romo relationship with Fiitsãn during the story, going on casual dates and stuff for fun. They experience strong aesthetic attraction, which is what initially draws them to Jue, with whom they become close friends. They are favourable to friendship, and have friends including Jue and their best friend Daanah (for whom they currently have alterous feelings), but don't feel a pull to initiate it with anyone in particular. They are still exploring their romantic identity, but it's not causing a lot of angst, and the exploration is driven by curiosity rather than confusion or distress.
Kaelía is demiromantic (as well as demi- every other type of attraction). Romance doesn't play a role in her life and she hasn't had reason to consider her orientation. I don't think it would be particularly interested in romance even if the opportunity did arise, and its limited "people I give a fuck about enough to try and maintain the relationship" slots are all currently occupied.
Zhe'ārani is alloaro and abrosexual. She doesn't experience any romantic attraction. Being aromantic is very important to her, as it defines what she wants and doesn't want both now and in the future and affects her relationship with the concept of love (she is loveless). She does not want romance, only clearly-delineated friendships. She does not want any sort of partnership either. She is very intimate with her best friend Qatriong and Qatriong is the most important person in the world to her, and she would never want their relationship to be seen as romantic.
Miwaanii-Shémelús is just quoiromantic, and doesn't care to label his orientation beyond that, as he feels 'quoiromantic' pretty much covers it all. He has no idea whatsoever if he experiences attraction in the first place, let alone of what kind. He is also extremely plato-repulsed, to the point where he can't read about friendship, let alone partake in it in real life- he has in the past struggled a lot with this but by now has come to terms with it. He doesn't desire romance, or partnership, or friendship (somewhat unfortunately for him this doesn't preclude him getting entangled in weird messy emotional secret-fourth-thing relationships...). He's fairly content in his identity and maybe even views it as a bit of a blessing, since it means he has no reason to drag anyone else into his mess.
Sei is frayromantic and bi. She hasn't worked out that she's aro yet, so her frayromanticism is the cause of a lot of frustration when her attraction keeps going away once she gets close to the person/people she's dating and she doesn't understand why. She doesn't have enough awareness of other people's lives to work out on her own how she's different from others, so I'm just going to have Yna tell her that that experience is called frayromanticism.

Appearance: Hazel eyes. Light/medium golden-brown skin. 5'9. Very skinny. Shoulder-length sandy-brown hair with colourful wooden beads woven in at the roots. Wide-set eyes. High cheekbones. Small scars and scabs flecking his face, arms, shoulders, and hands. Long, straight, narrow nose. Bandaids on his face. Long scar across his abdomen. Lines around his eyes from squinting so much. Red-tinted wraparound glasses. Colourful Senki tattoos on his hands. White cane (sometimes- depends on where he is and what he’s doing, because he doesn’t need to use it in all circumstances but does need it for instance on uneven surfaces or stairs because his depth perception is lacking).
Relationships: Ðiisiun-Awiir: sibling (older) Raenaa: sister (older) Naakiiwé: brother (older) (somewhat possessed) Faanchesk: mother (distant relationship) Westamii-Afwn: parent (ghost) (close relationship) Aischa: sister (younger) Linia: auntuncle Kaelía: twin he barely remembers but who represents the healing of his family to him (this changes as he grows and also actually meets her) Daanah: ally, close in a weird unhealthy way (he very much puts her on a pedestal and sees her as his salvation because she’s Good and he’s Bad, and she has decided that he’s her responsibility and she has to save him from anything and everything regardless of his autonomy; also their relationship is heavily impacted by external manipulation) Coraniss Sayklee: goddess coercing him into working for her Kéchawaedrii-Orl: boss/colleague who honestly is also coercing him into working for him (against Coraniss Sayklee) but whom he (at first) sees purely as his saviour Goffril: abusive friend when he was little, who does not appear in the story but still has a significant impact on Miwaanii-Shémelús Eraimo: older blind neighbour who is helping him learn Raised Point, among other things As well as some neighbours that he doesn't talk to much but leaves stolen gifts for (such as baby formula).

is your character partnering, nonpartnering, something in between? (From @aspec-ocs)
hi!! I'm gonna answer for two characters who know they're aspec and two who don't, from two different eras
Alli (arospec ace) and Rin (acespec aro), QPPs: Yes, partnering. with each other specifically
Vida (somewhere on at least one a-spec due to trauma, doesn't know): partnering. she's been in love twice and had her heart broken once. she is also a bit of a romantic
Kyria (aroace, also doesn't know): nonpartnering. She's a princess and knows there's a chance she'll have to get married because her brother is very gay, but she would really much prefer not to. the possibility of marriage is one she tries to pretend isn't there most of the time; she doesn't even want to marry a friend. this is very much a No Thank You idea

how does your character relate to romance? (From @aspec-ocs)
Oh thank you for the ask! I reblogged your post for future references, I found your questions SO interesting!! Thank you for sharing them, they are amazing to explore our OCs thoughts :D
I’m choosing Archangelo (aroace) for this one:
He doesn’t mind talking about romance with others and is glad when people are happy in their own romantic relationships, but he doesn’t want to be involved in one. When someone falls in love with him, he clearly explains his boundaries and warns that there will be nothing more than friendship, but respects the other’s feelings for him.
(When he was younger, the others were the ones who didn’t respect his feelings, but as he grows older he learns to filter his social circle and it gets better)

how does your character feel about being aspec? Have they always felt this way, or have their feelings changed over time? (From @aspec-ocs)
thanks for the ask <3
for this i'm gonna focus this on hayes, my aroace oc (or one of them lfjfjf)
for him it's always just been a part of him that he's never been self conscious about! he has an older cousin who's aroace and everyone in his family is fine with it
he loves his friends a lot more than he could ever love any lover!
