Farmer Taehyung's Clematis plant transforms into a man.

On a chilly morning in April, Kim Taehyung kneeled down on the just-thawed mud behind the old hanok that had belonged to his family for generations and carefully dug a hole about 15 centimeters deep in the sunniest spot of his field.

The melody he hummed as he worked was one he learned from his mother when she was still with him. Other than the singing birds providing accompaniment, the world was quiet, the young people in the area long having moved away and the elders still in their kitchens, the smoke from cooking breakfast whirling up from their chimneys and disappearing into the sky.

The mountains surrounding the village guarded him silently as Taehyung dropped the root ball of a clematis plant into the space in the earth he created. Flowers were very expensive, and you couldn't eat them. More important was to plant the cabbage and green onions and beans. Yet when he saw the clematis at the market, he couldn't resist the vision of pretty purple flowers propagating along a luscious vine.

He returned the displaced dirt to its home and patted it carefully over the roots. The rains would come and nourish it, the sun would shine down upon it, and Taehyung hoped to soon watch it sprout.

"Namjoon," he declared with satisfaction. "I will call you Namjoon."
