this isn’t like. guaranteed to be true but i feel like teenagers are depressed mostly because of the dissonance of growing up and being told “oh the world is a nice place!” and “honesty is the best policy!” and “treat others how you want to be treated!” sure you’ll get the occasional “there are bad guys that want to hurt you out there kid” but other than that children are generally given a very nice world view. then you get to where a job is on the table and one of the most common interview tips is “honesty don’t work, lie about things that make you look better” and you meet so many people and hear about so many people that refuse to be nice and seemingly don’t care about the golden rule and actively take advantage of people being nice to them. isn’t that disconnect going to shock people, especially teenagers that don’t know better? especially when the blame is placed on the child for still believing what their parents told them as opposed to on the parents for telling them something? it’s like paris syndrome if people just called the tourists stupid for ever believing paris was a nice place.
