the problem of fandom reducing characters who are women and/or people of colour to sexist/racist stereotypes is definitely aggravated by the fact that a lot of fans simply do not pay very much attention to these characters in the first place then subconsciously paper over the gaps in their perception with things they’ve been culturally conditioned to believe are true about people in the same category as said character

Fake Dating: Suna

A/n: I was going to do my English homework but then I thought of fake relationship shenanigans and I had to do this instead

Suna Rintarou

Being friends with Atsumu, you met Suna when he asked you to bring him a book he forgot in class

You got to the gym and actually threw the book at him, ya know... thinking he’d catch it, however Atsumu’s brain went into setter mode

He ended up setting it to Osamu and Suna got the whole thing on video

Once you stopped laughing and Tsumu stopped yelling at you and Samu, you ran over to Suna and convinced him to send you the video

You were so excited about it, Suna was both put off and glad someone understood the joy of blackmail

You literally started bugging him after that to get anything he had on your friend

Honestly though, it’s a pretty symbiotic friendship

You don’t get anything on Atsumu too often, but when you do? It’s the good stuff~

Suna’s genuinely impressed with your high quality videos and sometimes y’all passive aggressively share tips

You’re both kinda protective over how you get your blackmail, so that’s why it looks like you’ll make sure the other regrets something while you talk camera angles

You both have soft friendship moments tho🥺

When Atsumu messed up and got gum in your hair, Suna helped cut it out and made sure to give you some blackmail on him to make you feel better

He also gave you a hug

You end up comforting him when Atsumu does something without thinking and leaves Suna upset

No one’s there to comfort Atsumu when you two do something stupid to him thoughasjkbcf

It’s actually Atsumu’s fault you and Suna decide to mess with him to a higher degree then you’ve ever done before

That’s why you’re both standing in front of your shared friend, telling him you’re dating

Because you’re petty and think it’ll be funny

Plus if Tsumu didn’t want this to happen, he shouldn’t have made the cookies that Osamu baked spicy

The cookies Osamu shared with you and Suna... the cookies that nearly made him puke

Suna is surprisingly hateful towards anything spicy, he looked like he wanted to strangle Atsumu after you all knew what had happened, but you had a better idea~

A funnier idea✨

Atsumu is indignant and disbelieving of your little announcement, he points “Ya can’t be serious!”

You grab Suna’s hand and smile, “Were 100% serious Tsumu, you should know Rin and I never lie.”

He scowls and turns to Suna “I’m not dense, ya really think ya can mess with me like this?”

But without missing a beat, Suna leans down and kisses your cheek smiling

He’s doing a good job at acting, so much so that you’re blushing

It must be convincing to Atsumu, considering the look of pure horror painting his features, as he looks at the scene before him

You’re glad you got Samu to record from behind the corner, you’ll enjoy watching this later

You’ll probably watch it with your “boyfriend” >:)

“Did you really think we were joking?” You ask, blush cooling down

Atsumu turns away, muttering about needing to help Kita-san with something

Osamu comes out and the three of you share an evil smirk before you guys head to class, basically forgetting about what you’d done for the rest of the day

You both walk into the gym and you’re jokingly, threatening to show a video you have of Suna to his teacher when Tsumu walks over

He’s more cheerful now, and it looks like he’s trying to congratulate you for something?? And oh! He’s apologizing for not believing his friends... and for freaking out over something like dating

You scramble for words, Suna beats you to it as he swings his arm around your shoulder “Took you long enough. I guess we forgive you, right babe?”

Oh, looks like y’all were gonna sell, sell this fake dating thing

So you give affirmation, waiting for Tsumu to leave to ask, genuinely curious “Suna, are we really going to keep this going?”

He shrugs his shoulders and reasons “It’ll be all the better when he finds out.” He pauses “Also, call me Rin, it’s more convincing if you do that like you did earlier.”

So you keep it up

At first Osamu’s confused as to why you’re not stopping, but after an explanation, he gives you both a look and just nods he already knows where this leads

After this, you and Suna start a grove of looking like a couple all the time

He’s constantly leaning against you, resting his head on top of yours, and laying his head in your lap

He also gets your favorite snacks when you have hangouts dates

The best part of this whole thing to you, ends up being when you get these little fluttery, warm moments with Rin where you tell a joke or show him a video and instead of focusing on it like he would before, his attention is on you

Sometimes he’ll do this with a smile

It’s strange how normal it all felt, it was so easy to get used to and it’d been nearly three months since the whole thing had started

You wonder, with building dread, when you’ll have to tell Tsumu it was all a big joke to mess with him...

You realize you need to know when this is going to come to an end so you can prepare for the hurt it’s gonna bring

Anxiously, you bring it up with Suna at your house one day

“Hey, so... you know we’ve been doing this for awhile and well, when are we telling Tsumu it’s fake..?”

His eyes are on you in an instant, giving you a surprised look

“...”

“Rin?”

He sighs, rotating himself to wrap his body around you

You try to ignore the warm feeling in your chest, but it bursts at the words that you hear

“I’d rather not tell him when it isn’t fake,” he loosens his hold on you, “to me at least.”

Shimmying deeper into his hold you put your arms around him, giving him a reassuring squeeze

“Nah, it would be weird to tell him its fake when it’s real.”

He tightens his hold once again and neither of you can stop smiling

You tell Samu the good news the next day at school

He sighs when you do, mumbling how he knew it and that he shouldn’t have expected two lovesick idiots, to be able to get revenge on his brother
