RECLAIM THE AUTISM TAG.
I got fed up with the tag being terrible, so, we’re attempting to reclaim it

ASAN does not support any kind of institution. We work to try and make sure everyone can get the support they need in the community.

I’ve dealt with haters come to my talks or try to get them canceled before, but until yesterday, they were never violent or aggressive. What we saw yesterday was truly disturbing. Someone came to my talk and kept interrupting me to angrily ask questions about the content of my comics (“what age is this aimed for”, “do you talk about hormone therapy”, etc). She was recording the whole thing. I answered as nicely as I could, and tried to crack some jokes, but that only made her more aggressive.
When she asked “if we were ok with elementary schools inviting drag queens to teach kids about gender ideology”, it became apparent that her intentions weren’t peaceful, and was kindly shown the door (good thing she didn’t know that I gave talks in 6 different elementary schools since last week). She was kicking and yelling that my work was “brainwashing kids into mutilating their genitalia”. She tried to get back inside, but thankfully, the community managed to keep her out.
Of course, it’s nothing that I haven’t heard before on the internet. But that these people are now willing to crash my author talks and cause this kind of scuffles is a new low. The participants were shaken. Tears were shed. The owners of the small bookstore where this happened now fear retaliation. It’s a brutal reminder of the current state of trans people’s situation in our society.
I wish to channel the emotions that I’ve been feeling since yesterday as a motivator to keep doing the work that I do. The past few months spent on tour have been exhausting, but so necessary. The violence of the people who want to eradicate us from society cannot be taken lightly.
I still have a few days left on my Canadian tour - tonight in Ottawa, tomorrow in Halifax, then Fredericton, Edmundston and Montreal - before embarking on my Eastern/Midwest American tour in January. I am looking forward to meet you all and change the world one silly comic at the time.
Stay awesome,
Sophie

CN: medical ableism, hospitalization, institutions
We are sending Alice love and strength. Disabled people are often forced to spend our lives combatting the same ableist systems we rely on to survive.

What an absolute nightmare country…. This is neoliberal eugenics. Social murder.
She desperately wants to move to an apartment that’s wheelchair accessible and has cleaner air. But her only income is from Ontario’s Disability Support Program (ODSP). She receives a total of $1,169 a month plus $50 for a special diet. “I’ve applied for MAiD essentially…because of abject poverty,” she said.
One of her physicians, Dr. Riina Bray, medical director of the Environmental Health Clinic at Women’s College Hospital in Toronto, has been looking for better housing saying Denise requires “immediate relocation for her safety.”
But Denise said she and supporters have called 10 different agencies in Toronto over the past six months to locate housing with reduced chemical and smoke exposure that she can afford on ODSP.
“None of them were able to do anything meaningful in terms of getting me relocated, getting the discretionary emergency, or temporary housing and emergency funds,” said Denise.
Applying for medically assisted death has been surprisingly easier. Denise said she began working on applications for MAiD in the summer of 2021.
[…]
Denise says her life today is a far cry from her early days as a professional make-up artist.
“I was earning $25 an hour. It was a good job,” she told CTV News.
But chemical exposures from her work triggered her Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS). MCS is a recognized disability under the Canadian Human Rights Act. It’s believed to be caused by exposures to chemicals, or other environmental exposures that cause physical symptoms, although it is a controversial diagnosis in the medical community.
Her story is disturbingly similar to one reported by CTV earlier in April. Sophia also suffered from Multiple Chemical Sensitivities. She received a medically assisted death in February, after fruitless attempts to get an apartment away from smoke and chemicals in her building. Denise said she started the paperwork on her request for MAiD in the summer of 2021, long before Sophia’s story went public.
[…]
Among those trying to help her, is David Fancy, a professor of drama arts at Brock University and disability rights advocate. He heard about her plight last fall and attests to how hard Denise has tried to get a healthier home. But he’s seen her lose hope.
“Door after closed-door after closed-door…the gauntlet tends to push people in the direction of the legislation that is there, which is medical assistance and dying, “ said Fancy, who has started a GoFundMe to try to help Denise find better accommodations. “I’ve got a very significant concern that this is the tip of the iceberg,” he added.

When one-way masking is proposed as a sufficient alternative to universal masking for immunocompromised people, it legitimizes lifting mask mandates at a time when COVID numbers are far too high and people are still dying every day.

“SSI and SSDI recipients are an economically vulnerable and racially diverse group. That 500,000 disabled Americans have been left behind is shocking and should prompt a serious discussion about affirmative, remedial actions…”

okay not sure how to approach this gently but say that, hypothetically, you own some essential oil sprays purchased from a huge department store chain. and there is a recall because they contain deadly disease causing bacteria that has confirmed deaths and has infected and killed who knows how many people because of how rare and difficult to diagnose it is in the united states:
do not throw out the bottles. do not dump the product in the toilet. do not allow the deadly bacteria into the soil, water supply, or landfills. it is an extreme biohazard. do not throw it out. do not throw it out. do not open the bottles.
put on gloves, double bag it tightly in resealable bags, put it in a cardboard box, and give it back to any of the chain's stores. disinfect everything in the room where it was used while wearing gloves. wash sheets and blankets on hot. consider using bleach.
