mechanisms as minecraft mobs:

jonny: creeper. the og, the classic, the face of the operation. thrives on chaos. source of beautiful music but always ready to explode.

nastya: skeleton. ghostly pale and iconic. uses a bow to shoot arrows/play viola. will shoot jonny to make a music disc happen.

ivy: slime. adorable longtime member who is frequently overlooked but when you need slime balls there’s truly no replacement.

ashes: ghast. beautiful haunting voice and shoots fire everywhere. to be feared and desired (for ghast tears). will burn a motherfucker down and laugh.

brian: iron golem (see above). strong moral code. he protecc but he also attacc. made of metal.

toy soldier: zombie. prefers to attack in a group. just happy to be involved. dressed to impress and not to be underestimated.

tim: enderman. lanky and gorgeous. doesn’t usually attack first but if you look him in the eyes beware. a sneaky heavy hitter.

raphaella: witch. elusive and deadly. devoted to science and her craft and always looking for new test subjects. would absolutely poison you with no explanation because of “”double blinding””.

marius: villager. makes little hrmmm noises all the time despite not knowing what’s going on. surprisingly complex. accident prone but optimistic.

NUMBER FIVE: Midnight

Expands upon what is already present in Cinders' Song and OUATIS. Is structured around the twelve chimes of a clock. Lovely homage to the ideas of the original Cinderella while also being clever and unique. Beautifully and clearly written. Deeply moving.

NUMBER FOUR: Chapter’s End

Expands on Jack Spratt from "Our Boy Jack" and ironically makes him deeply sympathetic and human. Explains why Jonny is so hard on him in the album narration. Interesting and emotional insight into the workings of the Resistance and the fall of Outpost Rapunzel. Canonizes Jonny's eye markings as make-up or paint.

NUMBER THREE: Interview Transcript 34/08/7012

Provides a glimpse into what Jonny gets up to outside of the planets and stories that get turned into albums. Absolutely vital Jonny d'Ville characterization notes. Interesting outsider perspective on the Mechanisms through use of an interview transcript for its structure. Canonizes the Mechanisms leaving Brian in the sun for a century after the events of High Noon Over Camelot.

NUMBER TWO: How the Aurora was Won

A rare insight into very early, recently Mechanized Jonny d'Ville. Offers an explanation for where the Aurora came from and how the Mechanisms ended up on it. Crucial to the timeline. Tidy and well-written. Confirms the gory nature of Mechanism regeneration. Might be the origin and first mention of Nastya's coat.

Archive Footage

Only published work of Ivy Alexandria backstory. Interesting and effective, but confusingly written and the source of some disagreement by local Mechs scholars.

Ever After

A half-way happy ending for Cinders and the Briar Rose. Fucks the timeline to hell and unclear if Jonny or Brian is the one being a dick. Some good jokes, though.

In the Army

The Toy Soldier is the cutest one. Explains why one of its arms is different. Inadvertently contradicts "Ever After" by way of "Gunpowder Tim vs. The Moon Kaiser".

Mirror, Mirror

Names the seven survivors of the explosion on the HMS Anderson and elaborates on their fates. Explains where Snow got the name "General White" from and includes a sly reference to the Huntsman of some versions of Snow White. Confirms that Colonel Tuco uses she/her pronouns. Some references to body horror that may not be to everyone's tastes.

Out

Vital to the timeline and explains the disappearance of Nastya from the band and the story. Upsetting and heartbreaking. One moment of really good Jonny d'Ville characterization and one moment that makes less sense. Highly effective, but contains several moments of ambiguity. Raises the question of how Jonny got Nastya's coat back for Death to the Mechanisms as it confirms Nastya wears it when she goes out.

NUMBER ONE: Feeding the Octokittens

Shows the Mechanisms chilling on the Aurora and getting up to shenanigans feeding the octokittens. One of the only written and published examples of inter-Mechanisms dynamics during fairly average circumstances. Features Ivy attempting to travel by octokitten, adding additional support for her love of cats, and Tim being overwhelmed by how weird and useless his new found family is. The second example of Jonny threatening to but refraining from shooting Ivy, lending support to the idea of Ivy as beloved by everyone. Ashes is bemused by Tim, fueling the Tim x Ashes agenda. Nastya turns some of the octokittens green. Pleasant, clearly written, and delightful to read.
