Me and Greg Egan's Diaspora have a great thing going on, but I wasn't surprised at all to discover that the novel originated from a short story which appears as a chapter in the novel. I was expecting this story about old-school humans mass-migrating to simulated polises with no gender, sensory feelings or solid mental boundaries to go in a lot of directions, but alien carpets wasn't it.
