2 years post canon vs. 5+ years post-canon

when they first reconnect post-canon, jeong jeong's in a vulnerable place, recovering from being on the run and his war trauma. piandao's priority is making sure he feels safe enough to heal, and he takes on a bit of a caretaking role.

a few years pass, jeong jeong gets better, and he returns the favor. this is their usual position from then on - it's healing for both of them.

Written for Day 8: epiphany for @avatar-pride-month

Summary: Ikki has something to tell her grandmother, which leads to Katara having a realization of her own.

“Grandma, I need to tell you something,” Ikki said, her narrow face solemn in a way that was very much unlike her.

Katara frowned, wondering what could be troubling her youngest granddaughter. They were having lunch, just the two of them, as they often did since Katara had relocated from the South Pole to Republic City. Her old bones couldn’t handle the cold much these days.

“What is it, Ikki?” Katara asked as she brought a steaming cup of tea to her lips.

Ikki didn’t answer right away, instead hemming and hawing as she twisted her fingers together, lips pursed in a contemplative pout. Katara knew her granddaughter. She was trying to work up the nerve to speak. All Katara could do was be patient.

At length, Ikki finally answered. “Grandma,” she said, quite serious for a fifteen year old. “I like girls.”

Katara blinked, surprised by the announcement but not in a negative way. She was just surprised, that was all. Ikki watched her nervously, chewing her bottom lip.

“Well, alright,” Katara said after a moment, and took another drink of her tea.

Ikki’s entire body seemed to exhale with relief. Katara smiled into her tea. It reminded her of the way Kya had told her something similar, although her own daughter had been in her early twenties when she came out. Katara had never taken offense to Kya waiting so long; it had been her journey and her story to tell, and she told it only when she was good and ready. It seemed Ikki was doing the same.

“That’s…you’re okay with that?” Ikki asked after a moment.

Katara smiled warmly at her granddaughter. “Of course I am,” she said. “Why wouldn’t I be?”

“I don’t know. I was just worried.”

“You never have to worry with me, Ikki. I’ll love you no matter what,” Katara told her sincerely. “How long have you been feeling this way?”

Ikki shrugged. “My whole life, I guess. I always noticed how pretty girls are.”

“Well, sure you did. Girls are pretty,” Katara remarked. “Who doesn’t think that?”

For a moment, Ikki just stared at her. “Grandma,” she said slowly. “Not everyone thinks girls are pretty. Jinora doesn’t. I asked her.”

Katara frowned. “Well. Hmph.”

“Grandma…” Ikki arched her eyebrow. “Do you think…maybe you like girls too?”

At that, Katara blinked. Was that…a possibility? All her life, she’d always thought women were beautiful. But she thought she was simply admiring their beauty. Is it possible she was actually attracted to them? She thought of the beautiful women she’d known in her life and the way she’d felt about them, feeling uncertain at first, and then realization dawned on her.

“You know, Ikki,” Katara said as she smiled over the rim of her cup. “I think you might be right.”
