Step over ants. Put worms back in the grass. Rescue baby caterpillars. Release spiders back into your garden. Open a window for a bee to fly home. They are all little souls that deserve a life too.

Virginia Woolf, from a letter to Vita Sackville-West wr. c. October 1925  (via paper-fairy)
{open starter}
Dunya penned those last words onto her letter and set down her pen with a sigh. It had already been months since she had last seen her brother and it would be years before they met again in person, an eternity. She looked out onto the rainy streets of London and regretted not bringing an umbrella with her....
But for how long? For ever?

wishlist: a thread where each reply is a letter, signed and dated and everything. it could either be really long ones written over a long period or short telegrams. it would work so well with historical muses

Character Profile for Pyotr Luzhin // background information
Name: Pyotr Luzhin
Family: Marfa Svidrigailov (distant cousin), Arkady Svidrigailov (distant cousin-in-law), Dunya Raskolnikova (ex-fiance)
Occupation: Lawyer
Bio: tw: rape/assault
Pyotr Luzhin is first introduced to Avdotya Raskolnikova in 1862 by her employer, Marfa Svidrigailov, who is distantly related to him; Marfa Svidrigailov is concerned by her husband's intentions towards Avdotya and hopes by setting the two of them up, Dunya will be freed from Arkady's possession. Luzhin is a successful, local lawyer and Dunya is impressed by his intelligence and kindness but is not aware it is an act; Luzhin is in fact a cruel man who uses his intelligence and position in society to get away with abusing those he perceives to be lower than him. He sees Dunya's innocence and naivety and hopes to exploit and manipulate her into the perfect, submissive slave. He pretends to be what Dunya is looking, a romanticist and philanthropist.
They began their courtship in 1863 when Avdotya is still working for the Svidrigailov’s and Luzhin is helping to support Dunya's family financially; in 1864 Luzhin secretly proposes to her with Marfa being the only person to know, and Dunya leaves her employment. In 1865 they officially announce their engagement and everyone in the village is ecstatic; the winter of 1865 Luzhin offers for Dunya and Pulkheria to travel to Saint Petersburg and announce the news to her brother. When they arrive in Saint Petersburg in 1866 they discover that Rodion is accused of murder and Luzhin offers his services to clear his name; they both instantly dislike each other but do not outwardly state it. When Luzhin learns about Marfa Svidrigailov's death he does not inform Dunya. Two months later Luzhin attempts to frame Sonya Marmeladova for thievery and gets into a fight with Rodion Raskolnikov wherein the siblings part ways. Luzhin had aimed for the departure of her brother so he could be the only man in her life.
However, when Razumikhin's socialist housemate informs him that he witnessed Luzhin framing Sonya, he informs Raskolnikov and they investigate him further. They find extensive proof of Luzhin's cruelty and assault of other past women, assaulting and physically abusing them, but Razumikhin decides it is best that he and Sonya break the news to Dunya. She is distraught at first but believes them and calls off her engagement with Luzhin and makes amends with her brother.
Luzhin does not accept the end of their engagement straight away until he is threatened by Rodion Raskolnikov, Dmitri Razumikhin and Andrey Lebezyatnikov to leave Dunya and Saint Petersburg. He agrees, but not before informing Arkady Svidrigailov of Dunya's whereabouts and offering him proof of Rodion Raskolnikov's crimes to blackmail him with.

Name: Arkady Svidrigailov
Family: Marfa Svidrigailov (wife), Alexei Svidrigailov (son), Nastasya Svidrigailov (daughter)
Occupation: Nobleman
Bio:  tw: rape/assault
Dunya first meets Arkady Svidrigailov in 1860 when his wife, Marfa, employs her as a governess to their two children Nastasya and Alexei. He is impressed when she masterfully teaches his children English and French and becomes fixated on her. When she does not accept his romantic advances he beretes her emotionally and mentally, but knows she will not quit because she can't afford to. In 1866 he follows Dunya to Saint Petersburg and is aware of the crimes her brother is accused of. Svidrigailov threatens the life of Sonya and to reveal Rodion's crime if he does not let him have Dunya. Dunya Raskolnikova is made aware of the threats Svidrigailov is making towards her brother and Sonya Marmeladova and reluctantly agrees to meet him alone at a local tavern. Whilst there Svidrigailov locks her in the room at gunpoint and professes his love to her, when she rebuffs affections he threatens to have her anyway he wants. Somehow Dunya manages to get ahold of Svidrigailov’s gun and shoots at him but misses; Svidrigailov offers her a second chance but Dunya throws the gun down knowing she would never lower herself to his level. Surprised, Svidrigailov allows her to leave. He ruminates on her actions and walks the streets of Saint Petersburg all night. Realises what he has done, the terrible actions in his life, he names the Raskolnikov's, Sonya Marmeladova and his current underage wife in his will before committing suicide.

Character Profile for Rodion Raskolnikov // background information
Name: Rodion “Rodya” Romanovich Raskolnikov
Family: Roman Raskolnikov (father), Pulkheria Ivanovna (mother), Avdotya Raskolnikova (sister)
Occupation: Student / Murderer
Bio:
Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov is the first child born to Pulkheria and Roman Raskolnikov in 1841. From an early age it is clear that Rodion is closer to his mother than his father, although he still looks up to him. Rodion's father Roman is disappointed that Rodion is not like him in temperament and attempts to push him towards the sciences, but Rodion is disinterested and only interested in philosophy. Rodion becomes more outspoken with his father and is often punished with beatings. After his sister is born in 1845, Rodion becomes extremely protective of her, and encourages her interests where their father does not. In 1851, and at the age of ten, Rodion's father abandons them for his mistress and Moscow. Rodion and Dunya take up odd jobs in their village to support their mother. When Rodion turns 18 his mother encourages him to leave for university to better himself, so in 1859 Rodion leaves for Saint Petersburg. Whilst in Saint Petersburg Rodion becomes close friends with Dmitri Razumikhin and his flatmate Andrey Lebeyatnikov and expands his mind with politics and philosophy. In 1860 Rodion becomes engaged to his landlady's daughter, Anya Zarnitsyna; in 1861 Rodion becomes disinterested in his education and quits university to become a tutor and support his fiance and himself. In 1862 Rodion's fiance, Anya, dies from a sudden illness. Rodion falls into a deep melancholy that none of his friend's can pull him out of. He accepts the financial support from his family but does not tell them he has dropped out of university. In 1865 Rodion Raskolnikov plans the murder of Alyona Ivanovna to purely prove he is smart enough to get away with it; he meets the alcoholic civil servant Marmeladov and his daughter Sonya and begins to fall in love with her. In 1866 Rodion murders Alyona and her sister Lizaveta who witnesses the murder; a month later his family visit to announce his sister's wedding, and Rodion instantly dislikes Dunya's fiance Luzhin. After Luzhin accuses Sonya of theft, Raskolnikov and Razumikhin set out to clear her name and unearth the truth of Luzhin’s cruelty; Razumikhin and Sonya inform Dunya and she calls off the wedding. With the guilt playing on his mind, and the support of his family, Rodion confesses to the murder of the Ivanovna sister's and is sentenced to eight years in prison.
With the finances provided from Svidrigailov's will, in 1870 Dunya Raskolnikova immigrated to Britain after advice from her brother; after converting to catholicism Rodion asks Sonya Marmeladova to marry him once his sentence is over and she agrees. In 1871 Rodion begins to receive letters from his father announcing he is gravely ill, Rodion ignores them. In 1872 Rodion is informed that his father has died, and reincluded his children in his will. In 1874 Rodion Raskolnikov is released from prison and marries Sonya Marmeladov
this post was created as a link-to to explain the background of Dunya’s brother for plots circling the discovery/blackmail of the murders committed by Rodion. You can read the rest of the character profiles here.
