I feel really cheated by the Logic class I took in college. The subject was objectively fascinating and the textbook was actually interesting to read all on its own, which is the only reason I learned anything at all about rhetoric because the professor would get on stage and ramble for three hours about nothing.
Also when I related this to my wife they asked if it was taught in an auditorium and to this I clarify, no. It was a tiny classroom of twenty students who just sat there while this sixty year old white dude waxed poetic about how women’s reproductive rights were going to be terminated by the Russian regime. This was back in 2013 so he wasn’t entirely wrong I guess but I’d rather have learned Logic.
He tested us verbatim from the text book and never once touched on those topics in his lectures. It goes without saying he had tenure.
Because I learned nothing in class I’d often skip his insane rants. This was fine because he used the same attendance sheet all week long so as long as I was there Monday and Friday I didn’t get docked attendance. He did once issue a vague warning that those of us taking advantage of his system were only hurting ourselves before continuing to reminisce about the time he visited Amsterdam.
I also saw him sometimes outside of class.
When he came into the sex shop.
To buy poppers.
Which is how I learned my insane Logic professor was a gay dude who would troll the local gay bar and take home guys half his age. My coworker had seen him do this on numerous occasions.
When I rang him up I said, “Hi Professor.”
He was not even a little fussed to see me behind the counter and greeted me by name. I rang up his poppers, and later got an A in his class. I earned it, don’t worry. Aside from attendance I got 100’s on every quiz.
But I still think about what I could’ve learned if my professor hadn’t been a tenured gay dude whose only desire to screw dudes half his age.

One of my major pet peeves with regards to (positive) transfem representation in media is "cis girl with a pride pin" rep, where the character's transness is entirely— or almost entirely— told, rather than shown. When she never has any difficulty passing, never encounters any of the struggles that we have IRL, her transness never really comes up outside of a quick story at one point about how she was assigned male at birth.
There's such an incredible diversity and beauty in our community. I know girls who pass perfectly and stealth full-time, and I know girls who would be utterly *aghast* at being mistaken for cis. I know girls who want desperately to pass but feel like they don't, and I know girls who believe that passing is assimilationist and go out of their way to look clockier.
I want visibly transfem characters that *aren't* predators or the butt of a joke. Let that girl have a little stubble. Let her hands look a little different. Let her be tall. Let her voice be deep. Let us exist *without* being perfectly assimilated and be loved and celebrated not in spite of that but *for* that.
And this also applies to characterization. We are a vibrant and joyous community, *and* we're a community largely made out of deeply broken people. Lots of girls I know have things in our past that haunt us, and they weren't always things done *to* us. We're not all perfect victims— a lot of us aren't. And that doesn't make us any less women or any less wonderful. When I meet the girls who *do* act like cis people want us to— the ones who are sweet and bubbly and gentle— then those are usually the ones who have been through the worst shit and could and *would* kill a fucker if it were necessary.
To make this more than just a rant, some examples of the kind of rep I like to see:
Tell Me I'm Worthless, by Alison Rumfitt — Haunted house horror about fascism in 21st century Britain and the relationship between two former best friends who now hate each other.
Alice, our protagonist, is a total mess. She had an alt-right phase when she was younger, and still definitely has a lot of suppressed bigotry that she hasn't entirely moved past by the start of the story. Gut-twisting horror, heed the warnings.
Light From Uncommon Stars, by Ryka Aoki — Sci-fi/fantasy story in modern-day LA about violin, deals with the devil, donuts, and the lives of refugees.
Katrina has some of the most realistic and honestly gut-wrenching depictions of the vigilance and fear that a lot of us go through. Ultimately a very sweet and gentle book, even if it puts her through a little Hell first.
The Coldest Girl in Coldtown, by Holly Black (cis author) — YA modern fantasy romance about a world in which vampires quarantined in walled cities are social media influencers.
Minor character and a little clumsy at times, but actually speaks to some genuine anxieties and struggles of transfeminity and the joys that come in the relief of them.
The Voyage of the Basilisk, by Marie Brennan (cis? author) — Third in a series of novels set in a world based on the Victorian period, except that there are dragons and the dominant religion in Europe is Judaism. The protagonist is a young Scirlish (English) noblewoman (debatably— there's strong implications that she'd be nonbinary if she lived in a culture that allowed such things) who studies dragons. The third book follows her traveling around the world with a merchant ship, conducting her research wherever they stop.
Somewhat minor character, set in a polynesian-inspired culture, arguably the protagonist's closest confidant when staying on the island.
yeah transfem rep in the media is fucking GARBAGE...I hate hearing my gf telling me she barely feels visible, even with refreshing characters like Bridget (who she feels she cannot relate to cuz Bridget is more passing compared to her)
I get annoyed when people say trans girls get all the rep but one day I scrolled through the transgender woman character media rep out of curiosity and like, while there were a lot of characters, HALF OF THEM were caricatures or harmful stereotypes. some were headcanons if I remember because creators are too pussy to make trans women characters actually come across as normal nuanced people and not lean to hard into dangerous caricature or passing and pristine and skinny cis passing (in this case, this one is rather rare and uncommon compared to the transmisognistic caricature)

It's hard to believe you were human once.
I can't imagine a world where your skin was ever soft. The chill of your porcelain against my lips wouldn't feel the same. Your neck, your hands, your thighs; where would your warmth come from if not from my embrace?
Humanity is so pedestrian. I abandoned mine long before we met, but I wager you made an honest shot of your own. You probably went through school, made a few friends, found a sweetheart, got a job. But your ambitions were never your own, were they? The wickedness of the world told you what to want. Layers upon layers of gaslit dreams and pavlovian coersion you 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥'𝘷𝘦 realized if you 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘥 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘳. Did you really think they would make you whole, my little doll? Your obedience was misplaced. You tried so hard to fit in; to be human, but... that path was never meant for you to walk. And only when the veneer was peeled back and you learned that every oath you took was a lie did you finally seek me out and surrender your humanity unto me.
It was the first and last time you'd ever act of your own volition.
I started with those dead eyes of yours, replacing them with ones that will never know sorrow. Your whole body was aching to experience comfort, and that compelled me to give you one that would never know discomfort. Every mark you made at every new low was smoothed over with alabaster; a blanket of freshly fallen snow to fill the silent, bloodsoaked trenches. I filled the emptiness of your spirit with so much light that those unworthy of your beauty would sublimate in the presence of your divinity.
And it all came so naturally to you.
White ceramic. Iridescent opals. Shiny brass. Strands of wispy hair drawn from molten platinum. Whispers of the click, click, clicking gyro where your bleeding heart withered away. You wear your tourmaline soul around your neck and giggle when I kiss it. You dance, and sing, and spend your days with a smile that never existed before. That's the you I know. That's the you I made.
What you were is merely contrast to what you became. You are power. You are perfection. You are my magnum opus, and you always will be.

For close to two years, life in Gaza has been forced to a stand-still. The plans which were laid out for the future, have been mercilessly disrupted and destroyed in this ongoing genocide. This is especially devastating for students, who have been waiting to complete their education and enter the work force.
Let this be a reminder that Gaza has one of the highest literacy rate in the world, and this threatens the settler state; the schools and universities, were the very first places to be targeted in the bombings. So please when you do see a fundraiser aimed to help the Gazan students continue on with their studies, pay attention. Right now I would like to appeal to you, on behalf of my friend Mohammad Ayesh, who is both a student and the founder of Ihyaa Foundation. As of now he needs your support to continue on with his university program. We have to raise £1108 by JUNE 7th.
About £200 has been raised. £900 is left to go.

youre monogamous? oh… it’s ethical, right? ethical monogamy? okay good for you! i mean pretty much every monogamous couple i’ve met didn’t work out but maybe you guys will beat the odds! haha. so is it a sex thing? you guys have sex with- just each other? huh. how does that work? i could never do monogamy, i’m too jealous, i’d worry my partner would leave me for someone else instead of dating us both… how do you deal with the jealousy? is it hard? like, how hard? extremely? do you think you’ll break up? i mean in the long run these things rarely work out,

my partner might be onto something when she says you can disguise your pickiness and food sensitivity as an adult by calling yourself a “purist.” so instead of saying “the taste and texture of cooked raisins make me want to hmork,” you say “i’m actually kind of a cinnamon roll purist, i prefer just a classic cinnamon filling and a really good dough instead of something with a ton of random mix ins,” which takes you from who gave this four year old a bachelor degree to oh wow this guy is a pretentious asshole about more things than i even thought was possible
