Historical practices of witchcraft: Day 3- Sieve

Place two keys on a sieve, in time form of a cross. Two men hold the sieve, while a third makes the sign of time cross on time forehead of the suspected party, and calls out his name loudly, three times over. If innocent, the keys remain stationary; but if guilty, the keys revolve slowly round time sieve, and then there is no doubt as to who is the thief.
-Source
A utensil consisting of a wire or plastic mesh held in a frame, used for straining solids from liquids. It is found to be quite useful when cooking; however, it has a huge connection to witchcraft and its folklore. There are many tales of people being forced, by witches, to gather water from a sieve only to have it drain out, “she handed her a sieve and said to her: ‘Go, fill it at the Well of the World’s End and bring it home to me full, or woe betide you.’ For she thought she would never be able to find the Well of the World’ s End, and, if she did, how could she bring home a sieve full of water?” (The Well of the World’s End).

It most notable tales include Baba Yaga and even The Horned Women.
In witchcraft, it is often used either to find lost items or reveal truths. The most common use was the charm above, in which it located the item and the thief.
I even believe it has the ability to make a connection with spirits, since within a few different folk tales it notes that the people suddenly can speak with spirits and animals.

There are even depictions of individuals using sieves, while being surrounded by many spirits, demons, and mystical creatures.
It may be that the witches used sieves as a way to pour out distractions and the veil and see what the truth was, just as a sieve does so with water, dirt, and gold.

Pascal’s Skepticism - A candle spell to help you look at things critically so you can protect yourself.
*Inspired how Pascal is always looking at things critically to keep Rapunzel safe* Needed: - Green and Purple Candles - Green and Purple Ribbon - Amethyst - Jade (Optional) - Something to carve the wax with - Protection sigil - Cinnamon - Flame resistant plate/s - Bowl of water Steps: - Take your candles and your carving tool and carve the protection sigil into them. - Take your green candle, and wrap it with the purple ribbon so an “x” is created and tie it off. Make sure that this is low enough that the candle will not set the ribbon on fire. Repeat this step with the green ribbon on the purple candle. - Set your candles on your plate/s. use your cinnamon to create circles around the base of your candles. - Set your Amethyst in front of the plate. - Light your Candles (Watch them closely until your put them out!) - Focus on the flames and the energy that they produce. Imagine it being drawn into your Amethyst. - Let the candles burn until your Amethyst feels as though it is glowing with energy from the candles. - Blow out your candles to close the spell and seal its effects into the Amethyst. - Carry the Amethyst with you to help the spell take effect! - Aesa <3 This is my Original spell, do not repost on any platform without my explicit permission. Sweet Cream Buns
This recipe was given to me by a friend awhile ago, and I feel it needs a little more appreciation. They’re super easy to make and are tasty too!
I feel one thing a kitchen witch has to master is their ability to make all sorts of bread. It’s such a staple, and is so versatile. Not to mention how much of a crowd pleaser it is.
This recipe is a tasty bun, that when bitten into, oozes vanilla custard. Whenever I make these, they are gone in the first ten minutes. I tweaked this recipe from one of my good friends who enlightened me on this yummy recipe. I highly recommend you to try these for yourself!
Now in this recipe I will be showing you three fillings that I’m sure you will love!
- Vanilla Custard
- Chocolate coffee cream
- Brown sugar maple custard
Ingredients
For the Dough
½ cup all-purpose flour
½ cup bread flour
1 cup cake flour
A sprinkle of sea salt
1/3 cup sugar
1 packet of dry yeast
½ cup warm almond milk (Or any type of milk)
2 tbsp heavy cream
1 egg
3 tbsp butter
For the Vanilla Custard
5 tbsp sugar
2 ½ tbsp flour
3 egg yolks
1 cup whole milk
1 Tablespoon butter
Vanilla Bean
Vanilla Extract
For the Chocolate Coffee Cream
6 tbsp sugar
3 tbsp flour
3 egg yolks
½ cup whole milk
1 Tablespoon butter
¼ cup expresso/ brewed coffee
Milk chocolate/ dark chocolate/ Semi-sweet chocolate (Its up to you)
For the Maple Syrup Custard
5 tbsp brown sugar
3 tbsp maple syrup
2 ½ tbsp flour
3 egg yolks
1 cup whole milk
1 Tablespoon butter
Directions
To prepare: Set your butter and eggs out 10 minutes before you start so they enough time to come to room temperature.
Start by filling a measuring cup with your milk and heat in your microwave for about 20 seconds, or until when you stick a (clean) finger in, it is just warm. If it is too hot, it will kill your yeast mixture. Add your dry yeast in and stir. Let it sit for 10 minutes to bloom.
Next, in a kitchen aid (If you have one) attach the dough hook and mix your flour, salt and sugar together. Now crack an egg into the yeast mixture and add it to the kitchen aid bowl on low speed. Add in warmed cream. Let the dough hook do its magic on medium low speed until the dough is very smooth and elastic.
Add in your butter 1 tablespoon at a time and let it mix until completely smooth. About 4-5 minutes.
Oil a bowl with some neutral oil, or with some butter and place the kneaded dough ball into the bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and place in oven with the light on, or in a warm area.
Leave it to rise for 2 hours, or until doubled in size.
Ok, so now poke your dough and let the gas leak out from the dough. Cut it into equal sized pieces and place cling wrap on it and let it rise for another 15 minutes or more.
In the 15 minutes, now is the time to make your custard cream. On high heat, add your milk and butter and let it come to a boil. Then turn down your heat and whisk in sugar, egg, and flour. Add in your additives (Vanilla, maple syrup. etc.) and mix on low heat until it has reached a thick pudding like consistency. About 6-12 minutes. If you are doing chocolate, here is the time to melt your chocolate in, when it is off the heat. Let it cool completely.
With a rolling pin roll out the pieces of dough and place a dollop of custard in the center. Fold them over and press/pinch the sides together. Repeat the process until all of them are like this.
Place them on a tray and wrap cling wrap over them. Let them proof for about an hour, or until they’ve doubled in size again.
Now with a nonstick pan on medium low heat, place the bun in the pan and cover with lid. Cook each side for about 5 minutes, or until it is a nice golden brown. You can also cook this in an oven. 400 F for 8-15 minutes.
Now your done! Enjoy this hot and cold, they are tasty either way. It will be a little crispy when hot and soft when cold.
I hope you enjoy this recipe!

Yesterday I made a goat themed pie inspired by the art of Bill Crisafi.
🐐🥧💕 He shared it in his stories and I’M crying!
Ingredients:
• Pie crust dough recipe of your choice
• 8 oz chèvre (goat cheese)
• 1 cup of shredded mozzarella, do not use fresh—get the bagged shreds
• a handful or two of crumbled feta (this one was kind of to taste and I looove feta)
• 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
• 1 sweet onion, chopped
• half a 14 oz can of artichoke hearts, drained and roughly chopped then laid on a towel to absorb excess moisture
• 2 big handfuls off baby spinach
• 2 cloves of garlic, minced
• 12 oz container of Tomz mixed snacking tomatoes sliced into thin discs and placed on towel to absorb moisture
• salt and pepper to taste
• 1/2 tsp ground rosemary
• 2 eggs, set aside 1 tsp of the whites of the eggs for egg wash
Recipe:
1. Preheat oven to 350 F, place pie crust dough into your pie plate. Trim and crimp the edges, poke holes in the bottom and set aside in the refrigerator for later.
2. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium low heat, add to this your chopped onion and a bit of salt to draw out the moisture. As your onion cooks low and slow begin preparing your other ingredients as indicated in the ingredients section—drain and chop your artichokes and slice your tomatoes and lay them out on towels-but stir onions occasionally so they do not burn.
3. When your onions are nice and brown add to the skillet with them the artichokes, spinach, and garlic. Stir to wilt the spinach and let the garlic become fragrant then reduce heat to low.
4. In a large bowl using a fork combine your cheeses and onion mixture and salt, pepper, and rosemary. Stir in two eggs, remembering to set aside just enough egg white to do an egg wash at the end of assembly, until well combined.
5. Place your cheese mixture in your pie crust. Using your fork, smooth the top to make a flat surface for your tomatoes. Arrange tomato slices over the top of pie and sprinkle with a pinch of salt. Add a decorative top now if you’d like (this is optional, the tomatoes are beautiful on their own) and brush exposed pie crust dough with egg wash.
6. Bake for 30 minutes at 350F then remove pie from oven and cover with foil to prevent the crust from burning. Return to oven for additional 25 minutes.
7. Remove from oven, your pie will be slightly puffed up like a soufflé. Let pie cool for 10 minutes, your pie will sink a bit as the eggs cool. Enjoy!

how do I find experienced witches to follow?
I’m so sorry this took me so long to answer. To be really honest, I wasn’t sure how. The unfortunate answer is that Tumblr lost a lot of its really wonderful and experienced witchcraft blogs because of how it treats its creators and the overwhelming environment of beginners in the first few years of witchcraft trying to teach and offer services. It becomes impossible to compete with. That’s why my own blog became a hobby instead of how I offer my services.
Keep in mind that finding experienced witches to follow does not mean you will learn advanced witchcraft from following them. The reason to follow experienced practitioners is for clearer insight on beginner/intermediate subjects rather than learning advanced work. Most experienced witches will not share advanced practices to ensure that people understand the basics before engaging in more intense practice, which used incorrectly could be harmful to the practitioner or others.
The only possible suggestion I could give is what to look for in blogs:
KNOWLEDGE
Demonstrates an understanding of how and why the magic they practice works and is consistent.
Doesn’t treat witchcraft as some all-encompassing practice but a group of hundreds of unique different practices employing concepts from many different cultures and philosophies. And keeps the beliefs and practices in their appropriate context rather than applying beliefs from one cultural context to another completely unrelated one.
Can discuss how deeper mysteries build off of the basics and what the next steps are.
Includes information on subjects encompassed in witchcraft; psychology, herbology, folklore, philosophy, occult, esoterics, natural history, literature, religious studies, mythology, history of witchcraft.
Have a working knowledge of the community and the problems that are present in not just the online community but the physical one as well. Pagan religions have abuse, extremism, fundamentalism, and all of the toxic things that other mainstream religions have. They may present differently but they’re still present.
MANNER IN WHICH KNOWLEDGE IS SHARED
Shares personal exploration and encourages self-exploration by the reader
Shares their personal experiences instead of only informative posts - or what I call spiritual death by academia. Scholars are extremely helpful in providing historical context but without offering personal experiences they can make pagan and magical practice feel cold, out of reach, or like a test you’re ill-prepared for. This is an emotionally connective practice, not a college exam.
The things they post provide illumination, encouragement, and empowerment, rather than self-doubt, fear, or unhealthy comparison. Fearmongering is prevalent in this spiritual community and foreboding comments or cautioning people away from valid practices, deities, and beliefs is a holdover from xenophobia around practices that were different from the Christian colonizing worldview. Death work, spirit work, spirit communication,
SAFETY
Avoids teaching spiritual concepts that insinuate that a person could bring pain and suffering upon themselves due to “negative thoughts”, depression, anxiety, or other unavoidable mental symptoms. (eg The Law of Attraction).
Encourages safety and never encourages ignoring medical or scientific professionals.
Never suggests spiritual causes to psychological or medical conditions as the first solution.
I hope this helps.
💙 Elisa

Herbs you can grow indoors.
Made this list for my fellow witchies who like their kitchen to be full of the green stuff :
Basil : like lots of sun and warmth. More difficult to grow in the winter months
Bay : needs plenty of sun and fresh air.
Chives : needs at least 6 hours of sun and plenty of water.
Dill : prefers slightly acidic soil, needs plenty of sunlight, doesn’t need too much water.
Lemongrass : My personal favorite as you don’t plant it in soil. Grow in a couple of inches of water. Easiest to grow.
Mint : needs plenty of water and needs to be placed in an area with indirect light. Harvest frequently.
Oregano : does not deal well with cold and drastic temperature changes could kill it.
Parsley : Doesn’t require too much light or maintenance, but is a slow grower.
Rosemary : needs 6 - 8 hours of strong, direct sunlight. Only water when the top layer of soil feels dry. Needs good ventilation. A bit trickier to grow.
Sage : Needs plenty of sun.
Thyme : Needs 6 - 8 hours of sunlight a day and maybe even supplemental light.
