"I guess not," he shrugged. "I think travelling is a lot of fun, but a lot of that depends on where you go and who you're with, I suppose..." Komaeda trailed off, lost in thought for a few moments
Komaeda listened to his companion's ramblings, surprised by how easily he shared such personal details of his life. Komaeda wasn't the most easiest person to talk to by any means, so why would Gear share this with him? He could only wonder, and he provided no explanation when he finally caught himself rambling. "Don't worry, I don't mind." He smiled cheerily at the boy. "Sometimes it's just nice to get things off your chest." Komaeda wondered if he should share some of his history to make them even, but decided against that. Any sane person would run for the hills if they were told about Komaeda's background, so it was best to keep it hidden.
They made it to the library finally, and luckily there weren't many people around so there was a free table in the corner that was a bit more secluded than the other tables. "Do you mind if we sit over there?" Komaeda gestured. He found it was a lot easier on everyone if he sat a bit more isolated from those around him.

((uwaahh sorry for being so inactive again, especially on Aya's account, but I'm gonna try to get on here more often!! If you'd like a starter with either Ko or Aya, then just shoot an ask here or at emotionless-empath.
Alsoo, I have some open starters that no one replied to: this one for Komaeda, and this one for Aya))

"Assistant?" He tilted his head a bit in mild confusion. Komaeda would have never thought of it like that, after all he was definitely not worthy of having an assistant, but he made no vocal complaint. "Ah, I guess so, I didn't think of it that way," he agreed with a crooked smile despite his inner protest.
"Ah, I'd be glad to meet some of your friends!" Komaeda beamed. Being introduced to people was a lot easier than trying to make friends himself. Hopefully some of those people would be in his other classes so he'd had a couple acquaintances to work on projects with. That would be lucky! "Do you really think they'd like me?" He rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. Sayaka seemed to like him, but not many people could stand him so it wasn't looking too hopeful for him, even with her help. Still, any help was better than none, and Komaeda definitely needed all the help he could get.
"Hm, an elevator?" The thought of him plummeting to his death on one of those was a lot less pleasant than falling down the stairs. "Ah, I'm not that worried, Maizono-san. I can take a few scrapes and scratches from falling. I'm pretty used to it now really." He'd just have to make sure he was more careful, that's all.
At her questioned, Komaeda checked his schedule to confirm it. "Uh, right!" He nodded as he spoke. "If I'm not going to spend much time any further up, then there's no reason to show it to me." He could go up another time to explore if he wanted to, though it was doubtful. Too many flights of stairs winded him, and it wasn't really good for his condition. "But, what's up there anyway?"
A Hopeful Surprise Gone Wrong (badluck-komaeda)
Sayaka smiled at him. She was glad that Komaeda was lucky enough to bump into her! “I’m glad! I wish I would’ve had someone show me around my first day. I guess you could call me your assistant for the day!” She giggled, thinking that was funny! It was, in fact, like she was being his assistant and showing him around for his classes. Wait a second…wasn’t she also Makoto Naegi’s assistant? Maybe it was because of their good luck that they got her assistance! That has to be it! She laughed to herself a bit thinking of this sudden realization.
Anyways, she nodded and smiled when Komaeda seemed happy about them being in the same class. “Yes! I can introduce you to a few nice people in there if you want. It’s a pretty decent class, and I’m sure you will make friends fast!” She really didn’t know he was usually quiet in class or anything. Sayaka just assumed that since Komaeda seemed so friendly, he would make friends fast. She really had no idea though.
She was glad that he confirmed that he was okay from him tripping up the stairs. “Hehe, it happens to everyone! It’s alright that you’re a bit clumsy though.” She giggled, knowing a few people who happened to be more clumsy than most people. “The school might have an elevator somewhere if you are that worried though, Komaeda-kun! I’m not so sure it’s used very often….maybe only for teachers?” Sayaka didn’t even know where one would be, but she had heard rumors going around that there was one around.  Either way, she was glad they were up the stairs for now. Going up all these stairs was certainly a workout. Why didn’t the school have an elevator for the students? You would think it would, but oh well. “I think this is the last floor for your classes…right?” She didn’t really want to walk all the way up to the top floor…but she guessed she would if his classes were up there.

"Hm, Boston? I think I've been there actually." Komaeda tilted his head slightly as he thought. "When I was little, I mean. I don't remember it much, but my family and I used to travel around a lot, so I spent a lot of time in America." The memories were hazy at best, but it was better that way. No use recalling such things from the past, they only made him sad.
"Ah, right! I guess it's pretty obvious, hm?" Komaeda smiled. "Ah, it must be hard moving from a different country though. Did you move here just to come to this school, or before then?" Was that prying too much into private life or not? Komaeda wasn't sure, boundaries were never very distinct for him. He peered over to his companion who didn't seem to be paying him much attention, but it didn't bother him much. After all, Komaeda wasn't very interesting in the first place, it was a wonder why this boy was even giving him the time of day.

Komaeda chuckled. "Ah, well you shouldn't take what I say seriously, should you? Besides, do you really think I could kill anybody with this weak body?" He held out a shaky hand and observed how it could not stay stay still. "There's no way," he huffed, returning his arm to a downward position.
"Ah, right, I'll get you whatever you want, but I don't know if we can sneak ice cream into the movie as well. We can get it afterwards if you want though." The thought of trying to hide melting ice cream under his clothes was definitely unpleasant.
"A-ah, right!" Komaeda allowed himself to be dragged by the smaller girl. At least she seemed excited, which was not an adjective he could describe most people when they hung out with him. He tried his best to keep up with her after that, but he was weak and got winded easily, so he often fell behind for a bit.
"Um, well I'm not old enough to drive yet." Too risky was more like it. "And if we go on the bus there could be an accident..." Risking more lives was never the best option. "I was thinking we could just walk. Then all we have to worry about is getting run over, and oh, maybe someone trying to kidnap you." He chuckled despite the fact he was genuinely worried about it. "Just kidding, no one's gonna try anything like that in broad daylight. As for getting run over... I'll jump in front of the car or something." He shrugged. "I'll protect you, because I'm the hero and not a villain, okay?" He chuckled again. "If your feet hurt, I can carry you for a little bit." He wasn't strong, but giving such a small girl a piggyback ride wouldn't be that hard.
Are We Spooky Or Are We Dancers? - Big Bro Komaeda
'You say you're not bad or evil but then go on about being some drug dealer?? I'm really convinced, big bro! What next, you decide to be the next Genocider Syo? Jack the Ripper? Or maybe even a thief. Yeah, a thief murderer. But not bad or anything! Definitely not, riiiight?' You snickered, snapping at the boy. 'A smoothie sounds fine, unless there's an icecream place near the theatre. Then I want that, with extra sprinkles, M&Ms, Skittles, the works!!' You pulled on the curl of hair closest to your face, and giggle. ‘C’mon, you slug! You’re taking forever! We gotta go, y’know. Come on!!!’ You grab Komaeda’s arm and your Electronic ID, making sure to lock your door as you both exit the dormitory. You took note of his attire, his double-zippered shoes, his flyaway hair, and groan. You chose to have the person who was a fashion disaster come with you to the movies. Despite that, you journeyed onward. 'Do you have a car, are we taking the bus…? Or are you worried about us crashing with your horrible so-called luck? Maaaaybe walking would be better, but my feet would hurt, and that would suck and be all your fault. What'cha gonna do about this now, big bro Komaeda?'

Unlike Aoi, Komaeda took his time getting to the pool. It wasn't that he wasn't excited, he was, it was just he was no where near as excited as the bubbly swimmer was. Still, not wanting to leave her waiting, he made a little more effort to walk faster in the hallways, but that only managed to wind him slightly and ultimately slow him down.
He finally made it to the changing room, and after spending too much time trying to find a swimsuit his size (they were all abnormally large) and fretting about his embarrassingly skinny, sickly looking body (he opted to wear a t-shirt to hide it), he entered the pool room.
"Asahina-san, sorry I'm a little late!" He called out with a small wave and a smile on his face. She wasn't in the water yet, so he assumed she'd waited for him. "Ah, let's get swimming then." The boy peered at the pool, which looked nice and refreshing but also a little daunting. He was a weak swimmer, maybe he should get a floatie for protection...
Swimming Buddies (badluck-komaeda)
Tap. Tap. Tap.
Aoi was currently in her dreaded geometry class, tapping her foot anxiously. The class was extra horrible for her today, and she just wanted to get through it. “Now, class, what is the formula for the…” She listened to the teachers voice drone on, and on, and on.. Just end the lesson early already! Aoi yelled at the teacher in her head. I just wanna get out of here!
Aoi had something to look forward to. Or should she say, someone. She had made a new friend! The very thought made her want to jump for joy! Or, in her case, swim for joy. And it just so happened that she had scheduled to go swimming with that very same friend! All she had to do was survive one more class, and then she’d be home-free!
RRRING.
"Yes!" Aoi shouted, guilt free. She jumped out of her seat and ran out the door, not even caring if the notorious hall monitor saw her running. All she had in mind was swimming. And her friend, of course. She thrust open her dorm door, tossed her stuff on the bed, and jumped out of her normal clothes and into her swimsuit. After throwing on a jacket and shorts to go over it, she ran out the door.
Before she knew it, she was at the pool. The crystal clear water sparkled before her eyes, and she sighed in adoration. Finally. She was home. Deciding to wait until Komaeda got there to swim, she sat down by the pool, dangling her feet into the cool water.

Hiyoko deliberately waits an extra day or two, wishing to appear casual and lofty, before dropping a birthday bag in front of Komaeda's dorm room. Inside of the disposable canvas bag are two pairs of tabi socks, a lollipop big as her head, and a standard three-leaf clover she found outside while walking with Big Sis Koizumi. Not wishing for the boy to see her, she quickly scurried away.
((I NEVER SAW THIS WTF???))
Komaeda was surprised to find a bag outside his dorm room. Did someone drop it accidently?? He picked it up gingerly and peered inside to see the presents inside. A birthday present? He smiled slightly, easily deducing who it was from by the contents inside: HIyoko Saionji. Did she really have to wait days after to give him this? It was so typical of her, but he found it amusing. I'll have to thank her later, he thought to himself as he turned back into his dorm room while still rummaging through the bag. Hopefully she doesn't take offence to my bringing this up.

Happy Birthday, Komaeda!
Aoi giggles in excitement, beaming. She was on her way to drop off a gift for her friend! She had heard it was his birthday from her friend, and was determined to pay back his kind gestures to her. He had been so nice to her on her first day!
The swimmer tiptoed up to Komaeda’s dorm door, suppressing an excited laugh. Oh boy, she hoped he liked her present! She set the box down lightly in front of his door, making sure to place an envelope carefully on top of the small box. Once she decided it looked good, she reached her fist out to the hard wood. Knock, Knock, Knock. She knocked three times, then ran away as fast she could. Happy birthday, Komaeda-san! She thought as she raced down the hallway.
Inside the small box is a school ring carved with the crest of Hope’s Peak Academy.
Tumblr media
Inside the envelope is a handwritten card from Aoi that reads,
Dear Komaeda,
Hi! It’s Aoi! A little birdie told me that it was your birthday! To me, my friend’s birthdays are very special. I wouldn’t be as happy without you! I wanted to thank you for being so kind to me when no one else was. I really appreciate it! Have a very happy birthday!
Sincerely,
Aoi Asahina
Komaeda perked up at the knock on his door. He sure was popular today, and as he went to answer the door he mused on exactly how everyone knew about his birthday, as he was pretty sure he hadn't told anyone. Sighing, Komaeda opened the door and smied automatically, but to his surprise there was no one there. He almost retreated back into his dorm, but a small box outside his room caught his eye.
Daintily, he picked up the box and opened the envelope first. He smiled as he read the letter, and he could almost here Aoi's excited voice as he skimmed over the words. Almost every sentence was punctuated with an exclamation point, which only furthered imitating her enthusiasm.
After returning to his room and placing the card carefully next to his small pile of gifts, Komaeda opened the box to find a small Hope's Peak ring inside. He grinned, and slipped it onto his finger, ecstatic over the small token. Oh wow, this was the sort of thing he'd cherish. It would always remind him of the times at this school, which Aoi and his other friends that the awkward teen had somehow made. He'd have to thank her somehow, probably with some doughnuts and a trip to the pool!

Kioku bit at the inside of her cheek, peering down into the gift bag as she strolled down the hall. Inside was her default little gift set: One DVD (The Apology King, directed by Nobuo Mizuta. She hadn’t gotten around to seeing it yet, but she’d heard it was good and incredibly funny), some packages of unpopped popcorn (she didn’t get the hype but popcorn was apparently essential), some assorted little bags of chocolates and fruit candies and gummy candies (as well as one or two or five little packets of Citrus Golden Blend Kit Kat bars – her personal favorite), and, to top it all off, a little notebook with a pen slipped into an elastic along the spine – just in case he wanted to write a review of the film, like Kioku had a habit of doing.
And, of course, a card, wishing Komaeda the happiest of birthdays as expressed with a tiny cartoon of a little messy-haired filmmaker.
The girl’s only regret at this point, since she had everything she’d needed in the little bag, was that she could not stick around. She had a meeting downtown this evening. Ever since her spat with Shimakage things had been a little precarious around Kadokawa, and local peacemaker Shozo Kodama had since stepped in and settled things down. It was at his request that Kioku was going to this meeting – if it weren’t for him, after all, she’d probably be out of a job by now.
So, with a heavy heart, she stopped briefly at Komaeda’s door, taking only a moment to hang the gift bag on his door knob. With a quick knock to let him know something was waiting (perhaps in vain – maybe he wasn’t home), Kioku slipped away, down the hall and around the corner, muttering an apology under her breath and hoping that, if nothing else, he at least liked the gift.
‘Happy Birthday, Komaeda! May your day be full of sunshine and good things! – Kioku Higa’
Returning from his meeting with Maizono, Komaeda could have sworn he saw the figure of Kioku Haga retreating around the corner. He thought nothing of it until reaching his dorm room and finding a gift bag placed in front of his door. Placing Sayaka's gift aside, Komaeda dug through the bag to find all you could ever need for a movie night, including a DVD, a various assortment of snacks, and a notepad and pen that he wasn't sure how they fit in with the whole movie-themed present but still just as nice. He involuntarily smiled at the rather extravagant gift; there was no reason to go to such lengths for someone such as himself, but it made him pleased nevertheless.
Ah, how thoughtful, and so very... fitting. Just the sort of thing the filmmaker would do, she always treated him such such undeserved kindness that he didn't understand. First a cake from Maizono and now this? Maybe people didn't hate him as much as he thought. After scrimmaging through the bag a bit more, Komaeda located the card depicting a cartoon Kioku and chuckled to himself. He didn't need the card to know who this all was from, even if he hadn't seen her leaving. It was a shame he'd just missed her, but he had the feeling she wouldn't have been able to stick around anyway. If she was going to, she would've called when he didn't answer his door, so it was obvious she had better things to do.
Komaeda sighed softly. He was happy, of course, he'd never gotten so much recognition on his birthday, but still he felt a bit empty. It reminded him of his parents, and how distant they were, even on a day like this. Shrugging off his negative thoughts, Komaeda carefully picked up both gifts and struggled into his dorm where he placed them on the table.
The boy pulled out his phone and typed out a message for the filmmaker:
'Thank you for the gift, let's have a movie night and watch it together!!'
