Or, when Izuku, the lonely boy from the edge of nowhere, is summoned to the capital, his world is upended. His mission? Protect the brash, foul-mouthed prince at all costs, for he is the Hero who will wake the realm from her slumber. But he must hide his magic, unless he wanted to end up on the pyre by morn.

You can tell Hori wanted to make BakuDeku real but Japan (even though we can have Lesbians in Sailor moon) has to Japan and we can’t have a gay couple 😞

if i'm giving horikoshi credit, sure, i think he wanted to make bkdk canon, in that "i can't make a main queer ship between two men explicitly canon in a battle shounen but by god will i allude to the best of my ability" way. all signs were pointing to it! but if i'm being so honest rn i don't even know what he wanted. i feel like the manga was relatively on-track until 431 fucking t-boned us. not just in terms of bkdk but in terms of like. the story. the vibes. my god. the my hero academia of it all

there's a popular interpretation of his afterward that he didn't make the chapter, his assistants did; or that he was forced to by SJ; or this that and the other and therefore this chapter is not canon. i have no clue. none of us are horikoshi and none of us work with him so we will never truly know what he meant. i personally find agonizing over the reason why to be pointless bc it exists and there's nothing i can do to change that. so i have decided to choose peace and incorporate 431 into my bkdk angst agenda because it is sillay

also — gay couples can and do exist in japanese media, it just really depends on what the media is. it's why i never held my breath about canon bkdk; they're from a battle shounen =o= lesbians in sailor moon are more accepted bc sailor moon is a shoujo, that manga demographic having its own history and expectations that aren't the same as shounen's. queerness is decently commonplace in shoujo actually
