[06/03/2025] GDQuest Time!
Today, I spent a bit of time dipping my toes into learning GDScript and minor goofing off for the upcoming microgame.

I thought it it might be difficult to just "wing it" on Godot, and I know I can lose focus pretty quick if I have to completely follow a video tutorial. So, an interactive program like Learn GDScript from Zero by GDQuest was very helpful for familiarizing myself with the syntax.
There were a few quirks when I tried to experiment a bit too much after I solved the practice puzzles--my bad--but this is a really good, digestible resource!
In between taking messy notes on my notebook (moreso to hammer the info further into my head) I doodled a bit for my simple microgame using some of my older characters. It's going to be a simple Tomodachi style game where you just feed the same customer over and over again. I’m not sure if I’ll have enough time to make a feature to “change customers” and its kind of humorous.

Sometimes I got a bit distracted by my music when a song I recognized played, which was also pretty funny. Like this:
How're we thinking about little doodles like these? They're fun to make and place even if it elongates the post a bit more.
What felt pretty weird about GDScript so far was the fact that you didn't need to put semicolons every line. Functions and loops actually require 1 (one) colon once you call them--and you don't even need to close it off with a bracket either! Just, put enough space between the next function and reset it to the appropriate tabspace (?). It makes it feel more lenient than my old languages. I'm already used to it, thankfully!
There are 27 Lessons in total, and it actively encourages us to look further into documentation after we're done so that's something to put on the list too! I might take a look at their tutorials there, if they're as fun as this! Got as far as 17, and I'll finish the last 10 tomorrow.
It still took a bit of time, though, so I'll reward myself with a bit of Deltarune for the rest of tonight! Oh, best part is that I can do it again when we all finally get a taste of Chapter 3 too! Deltarune tomorrow!
I am also thinking of making another tag for script focused/learning-focused days such as these. I'll organize them by language maybe? Yeah let's do that, haha!
We'll see how things look tomorrow, but in the meantime, thanks for reading today's entry!

#musings#gd script#learning#I hope this doesn’t escalate into a tag-apocalypse but for now I’m having fun adding images and writing yippee!#now excuse me I’ve got a date with destiny tonight and tomorrow!

Ideas on Starting Small

[June 2, 2025] Ultimately, the smaller projects will only help me in the long run by helping me build discipline. Read my format test boy
-----------------------
Despite already having a few technically playable files under my belt, I still feel very much inexperienced in the realm of "actually" sitting down and coding. p5.js was easy enough to pick up since I was in an actual class, and Blueprint is pretty intuitive—but they’re not something you see in other engines, so I don’t want to pigeonhole myself too much.
I’m thinking of gradually picking up GDScript, Lua, and hopefully C++ in the next few years. I had actually tried to make C++ my first language back when I was 12, god bless you, foolish Sissel…
To make my learning process more fun, creating very simple projects might be the way to go. Its very tempting to want to jump into a more ambitious or demanding project, like the ones I've been brainstorming for months. But right now, it’s important for me to aim for something of a more achievable scope. So small it’d be really embarrassing to give up on it, since I can easily intimidate myself out of a project otherwise.
This video by Indie Game Clinic was particularly insightful. Here’s my little brainstorm page on “simple” enough projects;

I'm going to try adding in alt text in later, but man did I make a bad and messy page to use for my first attempt at ID'ing. Just another thing to get better at!
To make sure I put an additional time pressure on, like, actually doing things, I'll try to theme these tiny games to submit for orlandoo's Portfolio Builders Jam. As long as I get one project done, I can call it a success! This also doubles for practice actually sharing things on itch, too. If I happen to complete multiple throughout the week, I guess I can pick and choose!
For now, I'll try to create one game and see how it goes. Thanks for reading todays...post! It's not a devlog since I actually haven't started anything. I guess I'll reserve theses non-devlog posts on #musings, and maybe #weekly agenda as well. I'm still feeling things out, but I'm glad you've reached the end! See ya tomorrow!
#musings#weekly agenda#i had a specific format in mind for the latter. but maybe I should “just write” for now and tag around that instead?#im early enough in my blog where I can afford to change things later#me x overthinking things yaaay#i also think putting everything under the cut is the way to go too. i love everything looking small and it makes the blog easier to sift im#lmk how well it reads for you guys. though!

I'm trying to take a bit of a more formalized (?) approach to this blog since I basically gave up on tags on my main art blog lol. Tags subject to change, and posts will definitely contain more than one of these at a time, but here's what I'm thinking...
[project name] - for posts related to their respective project
debugging - for posts related to debugging
my game design- posts related to design, be it systems, QOL, etc
design appreciation - for posts appreciating game design in other's games
what I've played - for posts on my more general thoughts on games I've played
my assets - for posts showcasing of my own game assets
devlog - for personal entries on project progress
can we jam - for posts related to game jams and my submissions
weekly agenda - my plan for what I plan to do for the week, opened on sundays
monthly agenda - outline for what I plan to do for the month, opened on the first weekend into the month
WIP/Finished Work! - for labeling posts on completion, mostly just for me to check what needs done honestly
musings - free space, whatever is in my head
replies/ask - for posts regarding asks
reblog -reblogging other people's posts
queue you love me - queued posts
#tag update:#can we jam#debugging#my game design#design appreciation#my assets#devlog#weekly agenda#monthly agenda#WIP#Finished Work!#replies#ask#reblog#queue you love me#musings#what i've played#hopefully this will streamline things better. also thinking of hosting a wordpress alt too..

Introductions!
Hello! My name is Sissel! I've been an aspiring dev for years, and though I'm an alumni for the GWC 2024 Summer Immersion Program as well as CTEC's Video Game Design course, I really want to take better initiative making my own stuff! Currently I know a bit of ps5.j and Blueprint.
Now that I'm starting completely fresh over here, I'm hoping this blog will not only serve as a bit of a public diary for my dev journey but also as a means to keep myself accountable to do my projects this summer and further beyond. Turns out, writing my thoughts out while I work feels pretty good!
I'm still new to making a "real" blog so expect my formatting to change over time as I figure out what really works for me. If you guys have any suggestions on what blogs or articles to study, or even some personal advice, I'd be happy to absorb them!
