WAIT I JUST REALIZED THAT THE OFFICIAL/REVISED RELEASE SKIPPED OVER AN ENTIRE SECTION OF ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOMENTS IN THE ORIGINAL

“Nothing,” Wei Wuxian said, merry. “Lan Zhan, you really are a good person.”

Lan Wangji, seemingly unsure as to how he should respond to this, shot him a strange look. 

Wei Wuxian continued speaking. “And I just realized, how can I be this bad? Even as a kid, I was bad. If I apologize to you now, would it be too late?”

At this, Lan Wangji raised an eyebrow, a rare moment of expressiveness from him. “Apologize?”

In the past, each time this person would demand that he apologize, his wrongdoings would only escalate in magnitude. “Don’t look at me like that,” Wei Wuxian said. “I’m being serious. Ah, forget it. Let’s not bring up old debts, shall we?”

Looking back now, it’s hard not to feel guilty for what he’s done when they were both young. 

“It’s probably because he’s always so stoic… that I can’t help but love seeing him lose his composure,” Wei Wuxian thought. “That’s probably why I always felt the need to tease him so. Really, I was terrible!”

It’s good, then, that Lan Zhan never truly hated him.

It is strange: even though they were supposed to be on the run, Wei Wuxian couldn’t feel even the slightest bit nervous. Riding a donkey and being led by Lan Wangji, his heart felt light, as though it were floating in his chest. In this moment, feeling like this, even if they were to be attacked and ambushed right now, it really wouldn’t seem like such a big deal.

Last Book: ... That one's a little complicated because I read like quite a few books at the same time (on account of them being translated chapter by chapter). So the last book I read is Welcome To The Nightmare Live by Sang Wo and translated by 98novels. My memory is kind of fucked so I'm not sure what was the last book I finished. It was probably So Witches We Became by Jill Baguchinsky

how would one tell the difference between a crow and a raven?

You might be surprised to learn there are a lot of different species of raven and crow! The taxonomic difference between a raven and a crow (that is, whether a species gets named of or the other) is size and lifespan rather than genetic grouping. When comparing the species most of us are most familiar with  – the American crow (C. brachyrhyncos) and common raven (C. corax), which will be the two I’m focusing on here – you can’t exactly tell the bird’s age most of the time, so if you have other animals or objects to compare the bird to, size is often the first clue. 

The common raven is is massive for a passerine. It’s the size of a red-tailed a hawk, with a wingspan over four feet. Crows, on the other hand, are typically about the size of an African grey parrot. Compare someone holding a crow vs someone holding a raven:

And lemme tell ya, it’s one thing to READ about how big they are, but it’s another to SEE it.

If you see a corvid in flight and can’t get a bead on its proportions, the shape of the tail and flight feathers is another good identifier. A crow’s tail is triangular or fan-shaped, while a raven’s is wedge-shaped (ie the middle tail feathers are longest). Both have well-defined primaries, but a raven’s are much deeper and tend to spread wider. Ravens tend to soar a lot, too; crows are consistent flappers.

Finally, if you can get a good look at the head, the differences are pretty obvious. A raven has a beak that hooks at the end and is as long as its head (or in the case of a Chihuahuan raven, longer than!) while a crow’s beak is straighter, shorter, and lighter-looking in general. Both have nasal bristles, but the shape these bristles form is different due to beak size (a raven’s often looks squared off). Crows are kinda shiny and a bit fluffy; ravens are iridescent and have a very distinctive “beard” of shaggy feathers at their throats which bristles up like hackles when they call.

Finally, their voices are a bit different – a crow’s flat, high caw vs a raven’s deep, resonating kronk – but both species have a very wide range of natural vocalisations and are accomplished mimics. [This video] has some great examples of the caw vs kronk sounds.

mdzs fic rec: we meet at the thousandth step

Awesomely written wangxian fic! Reads like a book. I love that it's told around a series of night hunts. Some of the mysteries can get a bit dark but it is overall a very happy story. The setting is Canon divergent where wwx's parents didn't die. I particularly loved that there is a certain point of divergence that isn't entirely revealed until later in the story!

NEW ANIMATIC! This time for Wei's life trials, my poor guy. The original idea was posted a year ago on Ao3 by TheLoneLesbian, I think I got it pretty close to the whole script but maybe I diverged from it in some parts. The song is Cavalry by Shayfer James.

Sharing this frame cos it happens too fast and I liked it very much.
