Today I am praying for many things. One of those things are those suffering in the California wildfires. The devastation is beyond comprehension. Lives lost. Homes lost. As an animal lover,I am frustrated to hear stories of people leaving their animals behind hoping they make it. I just don’t understand. I pray for the suffering of those animals who were waiting for their families to save them. I see horses being led to the beach as those are the only safe places for them. Bless those good folks who are giving up to help the helpless. Firefighters are exhausted and suffering from depression. They have lost their homes yet they keep fighting as several areas are burning at will. Anyone who does not support these efforts, does not have compassion and empathy for all the firefighters are doing, I don’t care what your title is, this is a time for caring not hurling insults and threats. As you pray today, please pray for those who have lost so much, for people who have perished, for those helping people and animals, the animals who have perished, for the firefighters who are risking their lives as they face perils many of us will never experience and deep losses of their own. And please pray for those who don’t understand, not with hate-filled rants, but pray for their knowledge and empathy of the situation. Let’s not make this continued tragedy a political focus. Today I honor my dad. My dad was a young man who was an amazing baseball pitcher who went to the frontlines in WWII as a U.S. Marine. He spent three days tied to the deck of the ship in the scorching sun, getting hosed off in the morning and at night, as he developed his “sea legs” on his way to battle. He was in every battle in the South Pacific except for the first one, Guadalcanal. He watched his friends shot and killed. Being a Marine he was always the first one to land on the islands under a hail of bullets. He faced the Japanese elite fighters. The elite soldiers were trained as the best and fought with all they had. A young man from Wisconsin, along with many others, were thrown into battles with no rules, fierce fighting, death everywhere, mothers killing their children so as not to expose them to the US military as they were told their children would be tortured and killed, in a world they had never experienced before. Those exotic beaches with palm trees were fields of battle, exhaustion, crappy food, challenging conditions, and fear. They experienced physical, emotional, and psychological pain. For us. So we can live freely. Hop in our car and drive freely. Choose where we live. Demand what we demand. Expect what we expect. Today, I honor my dad. Who was a fiercely loyal friend, lived without judgement, never played golf as well as he wanted, and never complained. To all our veterans and soldiers, thank you. This morning there are thousands of people running the Hot Chocolate Run in downtown Chicago. It’s a great run ending with a tray full of dunking items for the melted chocolate they serve in a cup also placed on the tray. This morning, the warm treat will be welcome for many of the runners. I have run many races from 5ks to marathons. The running community is full of hard core focused runners yet more populated with focused runners that appreciate the community, the effort, and the camaraderie of those who choose to show up. That camaraderie comes as a great boost when the runners are in the midst of a downpour as when we were running the color run. Must of the color was racing down the street as the rain washed it away. Bodies were stained with color. But we smiled and laughed the entire time. Or the day the Polar Run was in full swing on the morning when it was 9 below zero. Or at the Marquette Half Marathon when the beauty of the day was not lost in the rain and piercing wind flowing off the lake. Through it all, there are high fives, words of encouragement, and a recognition not solely of that day, but if the work to get ready for that race. There are those folks, stuck in their own negative for whatever reason, who respond with a comment about how bad they are doing, not meeting their own expectations. Perhaps they had an injury, or they did not train as the could have, or with any athlete, it just might be an off day. I have one response I share with anyone who responds with a self-negating comment. I’ve said it for the years I have been running. “Hey, you are HERE! Look at all these houses around you. There are hundreds of people along this route that are still sleeping! But you chose to be here. In this weather, for your reasons, but you are here!” There is recognition for those that make the effort to get out there on. Sunday morning, that is often considered a sleep-in, read the paper, take it easy kind of morning. Nothing wrong with that. But let’s give credit for those that have trained, show up, and fulfill their own goals. Today - I raked. My 🏆 - a leaf in my coffee!
