Missing Pieces

Betty sees Archie in her window from time to time, strumming his guitar or pummeling a punching bag. There was one time she saw him and Veronica walk into his room; she shut her blinds before she could see anything else. Other than that, she hasn’t seen much of him since the night they caught the Black Hood.

She tries to think of the kiss and its possible repercussions as little as possible. She doesn’t want to acknowledge that she might have felt things that she shouldn’t have.

It’s all supposed to be over. The Black Hood is dead.

Why doesn’t it feel like it?

“Betty Cooper! What uber-juicy secret are you hiding from me today?”

Kevin Keller was ever the archetypal gossip. She knew that he’d be dying to know about the kiss, but the sight of a lip-locked Archie and Veronica tumbling into the lounge keeps her from spilling anything today.

Ouch. Was that supposed to hurt? Probably not, considering she was supposed to be so over this already. But it stings a little more than it should, so she takes her feelings and buries them under a metaphorical carpet. She’s gotten good at that lately.

Instead, she gives Archie a half-lipped, “everything’s fine,” smile, even though she knows she shouldn’t feel obligated to do so anyway. Because everything is fine.

Powerful. Dark. Sexy.

Chic teaches her how to channel the darkness. She discovers, after the first little show she gives, that it is invigorating. She knows it’s wrong, that her mother would positively murder her if she found out, but Betty doesn’t care. Maybe it’s the forbiddenness of it - the sheer thought of getting caught - that makes it all the more satisfying.

She hasn’t talked to Archie in weeks. At most, there had been a little small talk, minute and meaningless. A “hey, how are you?” or “how’s it going?” here and there. One time, she ran into him alone in the hallway. They said hello. That was it.

They haven’t talked about the kiss. She doesn’t think they ever will, at this point.

She sleeps with Jughead.

The night she loses her virginity really isn’t supposed to coincide with the night her family kills a man, but it does. That’s just the way things work around here.

It’s slow, steady, caring, everything a first time is supposed to be. She soon finds that she prefers being on top.

Her and Jughead are back together, she supposes. There was never really an “I want you back” moment, it just happened. Unspoken.

They sink a car together. She thinks that their relationship has never been so strong. Maybe this time, she thinks, things will finally be okay, at least for a while.

Jughead finds out about the kiss. Damn you, Cheryl.

She asks herself, why, why, why—didn’t you tell him?

She knows why.

They’re okay. That’s what she keeps telling herself. They’re stronger than some stupid my-life-is-in-danger kiss. She chooses to hide her worries behind sex and jalapeño margaritas that night.

Jughead and Veronica kiss. It’s surprisingly not that hard for her to watch. What really bothers her is what Jughead says before it happens.

“It’s just a stupid kiss, right Archie?”

Shit. Of course, neither her nor Archie want to watch Veronica and Jughead go at it. But neither of them are dumb enough to object. One word from either of them and it would become increasingly obvious that a kiss is never just a kiss. So they share a look, and watch as their significant others even the playing field.

Her and Jughead square up against Veronica and Archie that night.

“Veronica’s got you wrapped around her little finger.”

“And other parts of her body.”

She can’t resist the insult. She stares Veronica down, but she can’t help but see out of the corner of her eye the look that Archie gives her when she says it. He looks genuinely hurt. Good. She wants to dig into him too. Tell him how much of an idiot he is for siding with the Lodges, for getting into that closet with Veronica—wait. For the sake of not opening up old wounds, she decides not to.

She wouldn’t have had time for that, anyway. The robbers break in a split-second later.

Okay I get that Lili has the right to ship whoever she wants, but honestly, I don’t think that “shipping” characters on your own project is a great idea as an actor - especially on a TV show. I’m not speaking from any experience whatsoever, but I think that it is definitely possible for an actor’s bias to affect his or her performance when acting in a scene with a different partner than he or she prefers. It is probably better, in the long run, to remain unbiased, especially when many things can change over the course of a show with how the narrative adapts and shapes each character. Betty could be completely in love with Jughead during one season, and pining over Archie the next. Remaining unbiased, therefore, would prevent any disappointment with the outcome of a character’s relationships. I think Lili needs to take a page out of Adam Driver’s (Girls) book and just not ship anyone with anyone.

But that might be hard when one of your love interests is your boyfriend.
