It does happen every month! If you're referring to the first paragraph of Issue 1, I use "couple" and "few" pretty interchangeably linguistically. So Pinepaw saying "every couple of weeks" means roughly every 3-4 weeks, of which he is correct. Also, although the moon is "full" for technically only one night a week, it'll appear close to full for several days when it's waxing and waning, so BarrenClan gatherings aren't happening like clockwork and could be anytime in that period.

Ohhh Mallowstar Maklowstar. Cries. He was so brave he stared down a WOLF with CLAWS OUT he managed to spill Defiance blood as his last act. He did everything he could have done. Brave brave boy with a heart of gold I love him I hope he rests well wherever he is.

Mallowstar's character was always about yearning for a world he didn't think he was allowed to have, while trying to make the best of his circumstances. He was raised in such a restrictive environment that he never really felt like he had any control over his destiny, even as the leader of the Clan. Only towards the end, in his final months, did he begin to think it was possible to change things.

On a serious note, i really like the titlecard for this issue, it evokes a feeling of emptiness and loneliness i can't really put into words. It also makes me think of how thorough the whole story Mallowstar wondered and wished they woud leave Barrenclan's territory for a better one, yet they never did (at least not in his lifetime), now he's starting at the green grass he'll never actually get to see

My thought process while creating the cover image was to represent Mallowstar looking out over the territory he'd never get to find (you can see the richer green grass fading in) - so close and yet forever lost to him. He's almost resigned to his fate, like you see in his determination in Issue 35, but mostly just tired.

DREAM CURSE RAHHH! so basically it focused on the time between corm and egret leaving defiance and joining barrenclan. they were joined by another cat leaving defiance called egg. egg was then killed by rainhaze. also deepdark lived in a little cottage in the woods where it was implied that he killed the human who lived there.

Oh... Egg... honestly I do believe that Deepdark would fully kill someone to steal their cabin and live in it.

I’m so scared for the next issue because I could totally see Slugpelt dying if Rainhaze shows up… like I can totally picture like the Clan getting attacked and trying to run but then Slugpelt turns around at the absolute worst time, and just. Finally makes eye contact with her brother.

And I can just imagine what she would be feeling there; like, her brother goes missing, and then she finally finds him working with the group that’s literally trying to kill them at that moment. So I think she could get like stuck or something out of shock, and from there, she might not be able to block the blow that kills her.

Anyways that’s just what I’ve been thinking of since the last issue got uploaded… I’m so scared

So for clarification's sake I have never seen Game of Thrones, not when it was airing nor after it ended. But in late 2022 (at exactly the same time I was writing PATFW) I got majorly into the books and devoured them all about as fast as I could. When my obsession over something goes crazy, it GOES... I read A Game of Thrones in one single day when I got COVID, and then when I couldn't get A Clash of Kings for two more weeks it felt a little like I was in physical agony every day because I wanted that book so fuckin badly.

As for its influence on PATFW - it naturally seeped in, just cuz I was thinking about both constantly at the same time, but it's pretty subtle. In general I only realized the extent of its influence lately, in that PATFW is a story about generations, with a lot more dark, political drama and cynicism than I usually write.

There are a few overt references to ASOIAF in it, though. 1.) Longest-Claws, whose original name was Longclaw until I decided I couldn't just straight up steal from Jon's sword, 2.) Harebreeze's father, named Sandsnake after the Sand Snakes, and 3.) the branches of Defiance - Fire/Smoke/Ash, named after the Blood/Salt/Smoke prophecy. In fact that's more overtly where the title of Issue 5 comes from, which is why it includes the word "Salt" despite that not being super relevant.

Also, once I hopefully get some more time slash put it up as an option on my Patreon and furiously vote rig for it, I want to do an illustration of Ranger as Ramsey and Rainhaze as Theon, because a recent ask made me realize just how perfectly those two slot into that dynamic. Oh no Theon is my favorite character who could've ever guessed he'd influence my writing!!

Holy shit!! The new update was incredible! Does Mallowstar not have nine lives? I mean I guess it would make sense if starclan is a dead religion, but starclan would seemingly still exist regardless of their belief and pine and night have been getting prophecies this whole time...but you also said there's no afterlife in this world, hmmm.... I don't know what to make of this, but one thing's for sure: I am Scared!! :D

I've already answered this quite a few times on the blog, but I may have not addressed it in the comic itself? I can't quite remember.

Anyways, in PATFW, leaders only have one life. BarrenClan doesn't worship StarClan (slash StarClan doesn't exist), after all, so there's not really a way for them to get those lives. When a cat dies, they're dead forever.

Also, Pinepaw and Nightberry's powers don't come from StarClan. Or perhaps they do? We'll get into it eventually, but regardless StarClan is not a living, exisiting entity that is able to dole out lives.

Why are they not running away??? Unless the underground has some kind of escape tunnel they'll all just die once the Defiance wipes out the cats outside

If they ran, Defiance would chase them. All the cats know they're not fast enough to outrun deer and wolves. And besides, they'd have to be carrying the kittens as well - in such a rushed situation, their only bet is to try and hide some cats and defend them from a better vantage point.

But then again - kind of the point of all this is that there is literally no option for them. If they run they die, if they stay they die. Their fate has been put entirely out of their control.
