do you even see this shit? Do you? This is helvetica. Helvetica fuckwit Neue asslord 55 Roman. Do you see how the 5 is all crammed up the ass of the one? Get in there, 5. Fuck. #rimming. Meanwhile, the 00 pair is chilling five feet apart because they’re not gay. #nohomo
I hate helvetica. Words fail me. No, that’s a lie, I’ve got plenty: you think comic sans is bad? At least it kerns without drama. I am using Flexisign, which gives me kerning override modes that are absolutely broadsword swinging brutal, and that still isn’t enough to make helvetica behave. Helvetica is a white woman who doesn’t like her chin length bob and wants to speak to the manager. There is no way to satisfy this font. It is the worst.
When I die, and hand kerning over 1000 signs will probably do it, because even when kerned well it’s still ugly, literally we’re polishing a turd here,
please put helvetica on my headstone.
Absolutely do this. I will rise from my own ashes like a phoenix of fuck this font, and there will be fire. If you are among the spared, aka people who understand that helvetica is bullshit and you really need to use anything else, avenir, ANYTHING (except Arial, seriously, fuck you for even asking that),
It’s possible, but no promises, that you will be able to weave a web of Bleeding Cowboys to contain me, because that drama ass font with all its guyliner never fails to make me laugh.

Lecture 11
The Eyewriter is a low-cost, creative technology which enables Graffiti writers and artists with paralysis to draw using only their eyes. It is a free open source software for commercially available eye-tracking devices.
youtube
(Eyewriter Project; worn by Tempt1, Free Art & Technology, Openframeworks, Ebelling Group.)
The wearer of the Eyewriter is very capable of using programs such as Adobe Photoshop to create interesting work whilst continuing to pursue their creative field of interest. I found this video (sourced in the first quarter of the video) quite fascinating and put me in a state of awe as I know from personal experience that being able to move and use your limbs in art is quite important but the fact that they cater to those with paralysis is quite rewarding. This invention is resourceful in many ways.

Lecture 10 - (Conceptualism in the art and design world.)
Tumblr media
Conceptualism !! It is an interesting notion that suggests objects are defined by context, not functionality. A flag (i.e Pride Flag) has a very different function to that of art. Influential organisations such as Adbusters, the Guerrilla Girls and ‘Colour Magazine’ were all part of art and design activism within the 1980′s.

Lecture 9
The 1970′s U.K Punk Rock and 1980′s Memphis Design movement (in Milan) were both highly influential movements that are still found in design today.
Singular trajectory or technodeterminism refers to all mediums we have had. Until now the discoveries of futurism, industrialisation, mechanisation and the idea that somehow we could arrive at a singular destination was ruptured with coming of post-modernism (breaking of rules), and a lot of artists, designers and musicians decided that wasn’t the track they wanted to be on.
Post-modernism responded to the failure of these ideas being realised. Promises were made but society concluded that they weren’t being fulfilled.
Pre-modernism: “Because God put it there and thats why thats the way it’s always been” (notion of sublime.)
Modern: “Onwards and upwards with inevitable progress!!” (idea that as long as you work hard all your life you will be rewarded with all the great things capitalism promised.)
Post-modernism: “bklllllfklfjlfjahedhlfaJHFL” (chaotic unstructured approach.)
The Punk movement symbolises the ‘end of the future’, influencing design and counter cultural movements.
Tumblr media
(Jamie Reid's cover for God Save the Queen.)
The Sex Pistols Punk design of the Queen of England with the text ‘God save the Queen’ is quite iconic for its outstanding impact within the Punk movement, juxtaposing an image of the Queen with a collage of words over her eyes and mouth to give off an eerie feel, being counter-cultural.
In Milan within the 1980′s, Memphis design was quite popular. The Memphis diametric was opposite to that of Bauhaus,, suggesting that a medium can dictate a specific meaning. Iconic RAYGUN magazines that were being published at the time were quite influential and controversial on the design elements used.
This research lecture was very engaging and it really made me enjoy looking into the Punk rock and Memphis movement. I had been aware of the design projects associated to them but didn’t know of their origins so looking further into this made me realise how much I have yet to learn haha.

Lecture 7 & 8
Tumblr media Tumblr media
‘Architects, sculptors, painters, we must all get back to craft’ - Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus in reference to creatives feeling an ‘impulse’ to return to other forms of expression, other artistic activity and the exploration of materials above all in the 20th century.
The Bauhaus is a highly influential school of design founded in Germany which influenced major design designers. Bauhaus believed that there was a kind of spiritual connection or specific energies associated to specific colours and shapes.
The vision of ‘decolonizing’ design (that design couldn’t be taught from a male western perspective) was only successful to an extent as Gropius withheld the belief that women could not think in three dimensions (which is ridiculously sexist haha.) This notion further suggests that women could only work on 2D mediums such as paints and weren’t allowed to work on mediums such as clay.
Back onto the topic of typography, Bruno Munari, who was also part of the Italian movement ‘Parole in Liberta’, suggests that typography can communicate volume and tempo, having a voice. This can range from the boldness of letterforms or the use of symbols in text. The shape, density, slant and caps type makes a notable difference, that similar to using emojis in text compared to not using any (you would be deemed a ‘dry texter’.)

Lecture 6
“The grid system is an aid, not a guarantee. It permits a number of possible uses and each designer can look for a solution appropriate to his personal style, but one must learn how to use the grid; it is an art that requires practice” - Joseph Muller-Brockmann.
Having an algorithmic approach and modernist pedagogy, Joseph Muller-Brockmann aimed to accentuate the relationship between humans and machines (approach between the tangible and conceptual ideas.)
Something I found interesting is that empty space on a page is considered to be part of the design, highlighting the standardisation of page size and advocates for the standard use of page sizes.
“The New Typography”, initially publicised in Berlin in 1928, by Jan Tschichold is widely recognised as the godly ‘manual’ of design and is still referred to until this day.
One important component of design is the usage of the grid system. A unit of building like a brick can become a larger system of patterns, along with data sets (0′s and 1′s.) These are all fundamental for the accuracy of design, and are always relied on in programs such as Abode Indesign and Adobe Illustrator.

Printing Systems - The Evolution (lectures 4 & 5)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Johannes Gutenberg (1400 - 1468) invented the first moveable type of the printing press. Block printing was practical in the sense that through etching onto a single medium would enable fast, progressive mass produce (multiple prints from the same etched block) although, it was deemed superfluous upon the release of Gutenberg’s invention as not only could it be transported, but it made the process simplified (resulting in impressive mass production of ‘modern print’.)
Blackletter gothic script (Blackletter in the Gutenburg Bible, c.1450) is iconic for its distinctive style. As found on the Motorhead album (1977, design by Phil Smee, illustration of the ‘Snaggletooth’ by Joe Catania), the Blackletter gothic script is utilised. This script type is used is many gothic themed texts or stylistic projects.
Tumblr media
Grid on a page is an important element to allow the producer of the script type to reproduce the same styled font and form a design for each letter of the alphabet (including symbols) which can be used repetitively without having to repaint each letter - dubbed more time consuming.
Every typeface is distinctive.
Grid, page space, type fonts, images and principles are some of the few elements that make up a ‘font’.

“Hello, my question is..”
The aim of this project was to develop an interesting question based around the concept of design and to present it using letterforms made from objects or materials. This task was quite a difficult task as finding mix mediums to form the typeface was proven challenging due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, restricting me to use resources from home. Luckily I was quite a crafty kid growing up, so I was able to locate a box filled with different materials to work with as a substitute. The range of mediums I had access to consisted of a warm palette, so I tried my best to keep each letter consistent amongst each other, yet creative. The most challenging letter to complete was the letter ‘S’ in the word ‘design’ as I wanted to stir away from using bulky shapes and keep the poster creative. Personally, I think that as one of the letters that I was also most proud of. As for combining the letters and resizing, I had to clean up the edges of the shapes with the ‘magic wand tool’ and ‘lasso tool’ in Adobe Photoshop. Adjusting the lighting on some of the letters and bringing down the brightness of the background was also necessary as the photographs of each letter was taken with flash, so playing around with the exposure really tied everything together (thankfully).
