Hey all, I know I don’t post here often - I wanted to reach out and invite the Guild Wars 2 tumblr community to Sparkfly.gg - a companion web app intended to make fishing in Guild Wars 2 more convenient.  This has been a personal project of mine for a bit over a month now. Designed to be used side-by-side with Guild Wars 2, its primary target audience is people looking to complete fishing collections, whether for unlocking the fishing meta-achievements, or simply for fun and profit. Its features include: 

The ability to pull personal achievement progress from the Guild Wars 2 API

View collected and remaining fish with a variety of optional filters

An achievement-style main panel, with fish tooltips that mimic the in-game collection help details

Pin different regions for quick access/region switching

Regional help details, including recommended waypoints for fishing holes and supplies

Wiki links and click-to-copy in-game links for quick waypoint navigation

If you have any recommendations or bug reports, feel free to send them my way!

I’m a little late on my tumblr announcement for the site, but I did want to include the new details that I’m working on the updates version 1.2, including a notification system that can be configured to alert you ahead of in-game time changes.  These notifications can now be previewed at our test site: test.sparkfly.gg  (YMMV: expect bugs and other problems)

"Around ten days ago was Archivist Avenfold's birthday. The thing I've learned about Human birthdays is that the occasion is either quite a big deal to them, or they make an even bigger deal about how they don't wish to make a big deal of it. It's also apparently considered appropriate etiquette to inquire a Human woman's age only secondhand. I have not known many Sylvari to commemorate the date of their emergence, as it's often a day as much of sorrow in the loss of one's deep immersion in the Dream as it is one of joy at the start of a new adventure. Furthermore, in the collective connection we are all being born every day, constantly, as each turning of the world a new part of ourselves opens its eyes.

We would be holding parties every single day, I believe is my point. It would really get in the way of getting anything done."

@charrtists since you mentioned in tags wanting to know how the emote glitch works, i figured i'd share it here for anyone else curious.

have a mount set to a keybind of any type

get a persistent emote ready in the chatbar, but don't enter it

press enter and the mount keybind at the same time (this step may take a few tries, but if done right your character will be emoting on the back of the mount)

once you succeed, toggle off visibility on a piece of worn gear

dismount via the hotkey

toggle your gear back on

your torso should remain stuck doing the glitched emote, while your legs are free to run/jump/do any other emote you want

have fun looking incredibly silly :)

Character Intro #1 + 2: Loeikki and Zeiunn

I've been meaning for a while to talk about some of my blorbos, so may as well start!

Here are my two top gremlins, Loeikki and Zeiunn--they're brother and sister! They've got a pretty messed up relationship!

Loeikki

Loeikki is the older sister of the pair. Like many Asuran young, from an early age she had a honed curiosity, taking interest in particular in local flora in between studying her parents' shared research on biochemistry of skales and other wetland creatures. Often unattended by the pair, who were more scholars than parents, Loeikki began very quickly to concern herself with discovery over morals, and by the time Zeiunn was born, she regarded her younger brother as more of a test subject than a family member.

After some years of terrorizing the household under her guardians' blind eye, Loeikki, in the course of her schooling, was offered another outlet for her budding talents... in the form of an Inquest recruiter.

At this point, again, Loeikki didn't care terribly about repercussions of her studies so long as she got results (something that her teachers had written her up about on multiple, multiple occasions), so working with the Inquest seemed like more than a fair deal. It was a chance to do real, unfettered science, after all!

It only took a few years however before she grew bored of this path. Never one to be told what to do, she found the authority structures wearisome, and where they lacked in clear structure, too unorganized to function. Worse still, she found her colleagues and immediate supervisors wasteful, constantly discarding perfectly good cadavers, partial or intact, from their failed experiments. With a youth spent with a close eye on ecosystems, Loeikki was appalled at the prospect of letting these materials go unused, and began experimenting independently on finding ways to recycle them.

Very quickly, she veered into necromantic studies, and when her krewe work began to interfere with it, she found more and more ways to distance herself. By this point in time, Loeikki has all but left her Inquest position, dodging assignments and remaining a member only in name because of the risk in formally leaving the organization (though she's [over]confident that she could handle any assassin), as she travels across Tyria looking for any magics to study that she might use to refine her craft.

Zeiunn

It's common for siblings to share similarities, but one could not find a more opposite pair than Zeiunn and his elder sister. Zeiunn, though brave and bold now, grew up in terror, constantly fearing what his sister might inflict upon him in the pursuit of science. Though intelligent enough in his own right, unlike his sister, Zei had far less interest in advancing any research than in simply being someone others could rely on.

A sweet and upstanding young man, though a little dense by some of his family's standards, Zei found that he excelled in martial arts, and began to focus on the path of the warrior instead. It was a way that he could both prove himself and protect others, and, wanting to make his family proud, when it came time to pick a path he joined up with the organization that represented those ideals: the Vigil.

Since then, Zei has served as a brave young recruit, putting his life on the line as often as he can to save others. He often spends his time with Klilim, a bright but rather clumsy engineer with whom he shares a mutual attraction.

Despite standing up for justice and the law, and despite his fear of her that persists to this day, Zeiunn has yet to attempt to make his sister's activities known to authorities, both on account of the aforementioned fear and because he is sentimental, and she is still his family. And also because he has never become aware of the full extent of her activities. But mostly the fear.

And on Loeikki's part... well she really can't stand her brother, and though she rarely sees him, and though at this point he's grown quite a bit larger than her... She still definitely holds an impact.

Artifact Krewe's little secrets

I posted a twitter thread about little facts about Artifact Krewe and its development and I needed some strength to port it there, so here we are. First, if you don't know what Artifact Krewe is, it's a gw2 fangame I released and you should totally play it! It's the best Asura treasure hunt fangame that Skrool released in 2023 you'll ever play in your life, trust me!

More about the game here!

1- I have to mention the fantastic work of @ilona-art on the map artwork! I really love it!

2- Some parts of the game use heavy post-processing and color grading to change the mood and the feel, while the lighting is technically still the same as if it was outdoor.

Check the difference with these effect on and off!

3- There is a crepe recipe in game. You can use it to bake crepes. If you do so, I hope you'll like them!

4- There were originally round boulders in the village you could push around. They have been removed because they were useless. You can still find one in the puzzle area that asks you to push it to the end.

Each villager had a shield crystal protecting them from boulders.

5- About this guy: he has a lot of keys modelled. They are all based on Guild Wars 1 chest key icons.

Can you recognize them all?

6- In the "blue area", some elements are changing when you are not looking at them.

7- Having dynamic grass was the first thing I did for the game. It felt like the core element from the beginning.

To avoid too many heavy computation, there is actually no collision computed. Instead, I'm just creating list weird flow map of the area seen from the top.

It encodes in which direction the grass should bend. I have a little camera only capturing the trail of the character, and updating this texture in real time.

The red channel indicates a bend direction on the x axis and the green channel on the y axis.

8- A constraint that comes with that system is that I cannot have two grass patches vertically on top of each-other.

This is why there is no grass below this floating platform.

9- I had a bug that caused the player character to stay in place when taking a waypoint, while a new version is created.

Which allowed me to clone myself.

10- The bar was supposed to have many characters referencing some friends, but the amount of work required forced me to cut that.

The area has been locked behind a closed door for a long time, but I finally decided to open it, even though no customers are there.

11- The far background elements are just planes.

12- The main menu area and the lab are actually present in the map, just unreachable.

However, if you are not close enough, they will never be loaded.

13- I wanted to put my asura in the game to give hints to player. But for several reasons (having to model him, looking for a better system to help the player, etc.), I haven't.

He was supposed to be here.

14- Which makes that Ithikk is my only existing character I put in the game.

15- The ruins are a very late addition to the game, because tests have shown the orange field were not interesting enough.

I had time to try different ways to create an environment, and to implement the math puzzle system.

16- The user interface used to be based on a web engine, a bit like gw2's trading post UI, with a vue.js interface.

However, the plugin I used for the integration was laggy, not well maintained and lacked features. I decided to redo it natively.

17- The project started with Unreal Engine 4, and has been ported to Unreal Engine 5.

Some systems broke in the transition, such as all the physics, that I had to rework.

18- Originally, NPCs had a modular systems that allowed me to change their clothes, hair, eye colors, and so on, at runtime. This was unnecessary, not flexible enough, and not worth maintaining, so it has been removed.

This allowed me more unique NPC looks.

19- Vixx is actually a character from the first guild wars game. I totally stole him and twisted him to fit in the story.

20- In the lab, there were supposed to be a maze with doors you could open before the tree room. It did not bring much and was confusing, so the doors that lead to a dead end have been closed.

21- I made a lot of the sound FX you can hear in game. For example, the jump sounds on a various number of materials were just me jumping around in my apartment.

22- The sounds the golems are making while walking are actually the sounds of my (too numerous) tea cups colliding.

23- Finding the correct colors for the grass has been really hard and took a long time.

Here is one of the early iterations:

24- Your krewe members are each based on a color. When you first see them, they are placed in the red-green-blue order.
