Grilling season has finally arrived! 🔥♨️

If you're as enthusiastic as I am, you've likely prepared by stocking up on bags of coals, wood, and wood chips for smoking, while ensuring your grill is spotless and primed for this season's cooking adventures. To enhance your experience, I've collaborated with my wife, Richelle, and my cousin, Catrina, to bring you a wealth of knowledge to enhance your grilling experience. Let's dive right in!⬇️
Catrina's Tips and Tricks: 👩🏾‍🍳
🤤To elevate the taste and tenderness of your grilled meats, make sure to marinate or brine them at least an hour before grilling. This not only adds incredible flavor but also helps to tenderize the meat.
💦If you're using a charcoal grill, try using a spray bottle to control high flames and temperatures. A mixture of water, multipurpose seasoning, and a splash of olive oil can work wonders. Remember, we want to enhance the flavor, not wash it away!
🌡️🧊For those with larger grills, consider positioning the coals on one side to create a dedicated area for warming or slower-cooking items. This way, you'll have flexibility and precise control over your grilling process.
🪥🧅Now, when it comes to cleaning the grill, I'm a fan of the old-school approach. I use a grill brush to give the grates a thorough clean. But before grilling, I take a fresh half onion with a pitchfork and use it to oil and season the grill. It's an organic way to prevent food from sticking and add a subtle flavor. You'll love the results!
Richelle's Fresh Eating Tips:
🥕🥬Summer is all about enjoying the freshest ingredients, and grilling season provides the perfect opportunity to indulge in delicious, nutritious meals. In addition to your favorite ribs, salmon, and chicken, why not incorporate some low-cholesterol, low-carb vegetables like zucchini, carrots, and squash into your menu? They're packed with flavor and add a vibrant touch to any grilled meal.
👨🏾‍🌾👩🏾‍🌾One of my personal joys is supporting local farmers by visiting the farmers' market. I highly recommend incorporating fresh produce into your grilling routine. For me, Thursdays are particularly special, as I get to enjoy locally sourced ingredients multiple times a week. So, go ahead and explore the farmers' market to find delightful additions to your grilling adventures.
🥩My personal favorite cut is Tri Tip. So here is a recipe and tips for grilling the perfect Tri Tip.

Grilled Tri Tip Recipe:
Ingredients:
3 lb tri tip roast
2 tablespoons olive oil
3 cloves of garlic, minced
1 tablespoon paprika
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon ground black pepper
1 tablespoon kosher salt
Optional: additional seasonings or spices of your choice
🥣👨🏾‍🍳Preparing the Tri Tip:
- In a small bowl, combine the olive oil, minced garlic, paprika, brown sugar, black pepper, and kosher salt. Mix well to form a paste-like consistency.
- Place the tri tip on a large plate or cutting board and generously rub the seasoning mixture all over the meat, ensuring it is evenly coated. You can add additional seasonings or spices to customize the flavor according to your preferences.
- Once seasoned, cover the tri tip with plastic wrap and let it marinate in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to penetrate the meat.
♨️Grilling the Tri Tip:
- Once the grill is preheated, place the seasoned tri tip directly over the heat source, positioning it diagonally across the grill grates.
- Sear the tri tip for approximately 3-4 minutes on each side to develop a caramelized crust.
- After searing, move the tri tip to the cooler side of the grill (indirect heat). Close the lid of the grill and continue cooking for about 20-25 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches your desired level of doneness. (For well done cook about 15 minutes per lbs) For medium-rare, aim for an internal temperature of 130°F (54°C).
- Remember to periodically check the internal temperature using a meat thermometer to avoid overcooking.
🍽️🔪Resting and Slicing:
- Once the tri tip reaches the desired doneness, remove it from the grill and transfer it to a cutting board.
- Tent the tri tip loosely with aluminum foil and let it rest for 10-15 minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute within the meat, resulting in a more flavorful and tender final product.
- After resting, slice the tri tip against the grain into thin slices. This ensures maximum tenderness.
