Today, it’s getting some serious attention for an entirely different reason. “There’s growing research showing that the ketogenic diet is effective for managing blood sugar in people with diabetes,” says William Yancy, MD, program director at the Duke #Diet and #Fitness #Center in Durham, North Carolina.
How does it work? Normally the body runs on glucose for fuel. However, with less glucose on board, the body converts fat to substances called ketones that it uses for energy, resulting in a state known as ketosis. In addition to increased fat burning, ketosis is also believed to accelerate weight loss by suppressing appetite.
The Science Says
While many health care providers aren’t comfortable recommending the #keto #diet for people with #diabetes, there’s a substantial body of research indicating that it can help with weight loss, reduce the need for #medication, and even lower A1C into the non-diabetes range. It’s so effective that when researchers assigned 349 volunteers with type 2 diabetes to follow either a keto diet or a traditional #diabetes eating plan (the makeup of that plan wasn’t defined in the study) for one year, they observed some powerful results.

#High #blood #pressure (#BP) increases the risk of 3stroke, but there is limited evidence from studies including very old people. The aim was to investigate risk factors for incident stroke among very old people.
A prospective population-based cohort study was performed among participants aged at least 85 years in northern Sweden. The 955 participants were tested at their homes. BP was measured manually after 5-min supine rest. Incident stroke data were collected from medical charts guided by hospital registry, death records, and 5-year reassessments. Cox proportional hazards models were used.

Mounting evidence supports the central role of oxidative #stress and #inflammation in #obesity and the development of #hypertension. However, most #studies focusing on the non-enzymatic #antioxidants, such as uric acid and bilirubin, and their relationship with #obesity and hypertension were done in older populations with overt cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study was therefore to compare measures of cardiovascular function (blood pressure and arterial stiffness) and non-enzymatic antioxidants (uric acid and bilirubin) between young healthy lean and overweight/obese men and women and to investigate the link between these variables.
