Animation Tutorial using Balls
A lot of beginners struggle with animation, but the basic always comes first when it comes to animating, and that’s animating a ball bouncing. Balls bouncing is a study of slowing down, and going fast, when it bounces up and down, it has momentum and other physics that occur.
Here is an example of one of my ball bouncing animations. It is 24 frames per second and has 11 frames drawn. When animating, keep in mind mass stays the same, but the shape doesn’t have to.
The Example I will use for this tutorial is a jump animation I made myself using the ball like movement. Here I have a sketch of the ball bouncing to the side, but not loosing its momentum so it will be a continuous loop.
Now I added the bones of where the tail and legs would be, these aren’t suppose to be super perfect, but just let me know where the body parts are supposedly suppose to go. Tails on animals move with the body. They are used most of the time for balance and are lighter than any other body part on the body. So when animating tails, make sure they are not stiff. The front legs when coming back down to land should be prepared to land, outstretched and ready to go, back legs are quickly pulled forward to give the character its “Leap of Faith” sort of look.
This is where I start sketching out what the character will look like throughout the animation, its where i tweak and edit a few things that look off. This is hard to do as a beginner, keeping track of fur is tough, which is why having a onion skin for animation is very helpful to locate where the previous frames lines were.
The animation is then Lined and colored, and finished! And there you have a Dog jumping happily!
The animation is running at 30 frames per second with 11 frames and the character is Jarvis. This was all done using Clip Studio Paint EX.
