“How ILM Films Star Wars Motion Control Spaceships!” Tested
To film the miniature of the Onyx Cinder for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, ILM’s John Knoll built a modern motion control system using some of the latest technology available, while incorporating design features of the original Dykstraflex camera rig. Adam Savage visited Lucasfilm during the filming of the model to watch and learn how the legacy of motion control lives on in a galaxy far, far, away!

“Star Trek Filming Models from The Next Generation to Voyager!” Tested.com
Adam Savage is in modelmaking heaven as we examine several filming miniatures of spaceships created for Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager! Adam recognizes the work of master modelmaker Greg Jein in these detailed models, built with practical lights that still work today. Plus, we check out a prototype study model for the USS Voyager before its design was finalized!
Learn more about these models and check out the full Propstore catalog.

“Animating Raka the Orangutang for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”, Wētā FX
Raka, as mentor and hero, being the only surviving member of the order of Caesar, displays an extreme range of emotion throughout the film. Over 560,000 renderable fur strands were carefully groomed and then dressed with water, dust, debris and anything else Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes threw at this character.

“Epic FX Simulations for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”, Wētā FX
From Caesar's funeral pyre to plants interacting with wind and CG characters, a kilometre of rapids requiring a petabyte of storage, and a fully-CG water-filled silo with wet apes and underwater action, the FX simulations in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes were monumental.

Screen-Matched Talarian Spacecraft Filming Model Miniature, Star Trek: The Next Generation
A screen-matched Talarian spacecraft filming model miniature from Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek: The Next Generation. In the Season 4 episode "Suddenly Human," the Enterprise responded to a distress call of the Talarian vessel, where they discovered five teenagers: four Talarian and one human. This model miniature screen-matches based on the placement of the lights at the starboard side fuselage, and unique paint patterns on hull and top and bottom wings. Additionally, it is also briefly re-used in "The Perfect Mate" via re-use of stock footage as a Kriosian ship. Built by master model maker Greg Jein, this ornately detailed model miniature is constructed from fiberglass with resin and styrene components around an aluminum base. The spacecraft is hand-painted in shades of brown, gray, and copper with additional Talarian markings hand-painted throughout. It features internal wiring for the lighting elements, two rear engines, two elongated vertical fins, and an unthreaded mount at its bottom. Also included is a display stand. The lighting elements remain nonfunctional, as the original wiring is not accessible without breaking the model apart. The model also exhibits notable adhesive marks and residue, cracking, missing trim, and a buildup of grime in the fine crevices. Dimensions: 24" x 12" x 18" (61 cm x 30.5 cm x 45.75 cm)

Light-Up Mechanical CARB GS-221 Submachine Gun from AVATAR (2009)
A light-up, mechanical CARB GS-221 submachine gun from James Cameron's Avatar. Resources Developmental Administration (RDA) SecOp soldiers carried several modular Cellular Ammunition Rifle Base (CARB) weapons, including a variety of submachine guns and assault rifles, as they fought the Na'vi throughout Pandora. Entirely custom-made by Weta Workshop, this ornately detailed, futuristic bullpup-style weapon is constructed primarily from urethane with metal components on the barrel and interior rear from an airsoft M14 rifle. The body is hand-painted gunmetal blue and labeled with the "MATANZA ARMS CORP" company logo, as well as serial number "3587 36-248-ARC." The gun features a textured front grip installed with wiring connected to a depressible trigger, as well as a functional red laser sight activated by a button on the forward grip, an "HC-i"-branded scope, and safe/fire switches on either side labeled "S," "1," and "A." The trigger - originally designed to fire brass prop ammo shells contained in a green magazine near the butt - activates a recoil mechanism when depressed. Following production, this weapon's original magazine was lost and its battery was replaced. It is intentionally distressed by production with discoloration, scratches, and various scuffs from battle. The CARB exhibits a buildup of grime, rough edges around the scope, a loose scope cape, and a fractured top from production and age, exposing the metal interior. Dimensions: 20" x 12" x 5" (51 cm x 30.5 cm x 12.5 cm) Ownership may be restricted in some countries; see replica firearm notice in Buyer's Guide. Contains electronics; see electronics notice in the Buyer's Guide. Estimate: $15,000 - 30,000
