"EXILE! EXILE!" - Eavan Boland
All night the room breathes out in grief. Exhales through surfaces. The sideboard. The curtains. The stale air stalled there. The kiln-fired claws of the china bird. This is the hour when every ornament unloads its atoms of pretence. Stone. Brass. Bronze. What they represent is set aside in the dark. They become again a spacious morning in the Comeraghs. An iron gate; a sudden downpour; a well in the corner of a farmyard; a pool of rain into which an Irish world has fallen. Out there the Americas stretch to the horizons. They burn in the cities and darken over wheat. They go to the edge, to the rock, to the coast, to where the moon abrades a shabby path eastward. O land of opportunity, you are not the suppers with meat, nor the curtains with lace nor the unheard of fire in the grate on summer afternoons, you are this moon, this dish of fruit which has never seen its own earth. Or had rain fall on it all one night and the next. And has grown, in consequence, a fine, crazed skin of porcelain.

Photography 101- Portfolio (*Part II plus artist statement)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ten images from the twenty image set of Sidney Mansueto’s portfolio for Photography 101
As an artist, I took the time to wander and venture into spaces where I hadn’t explored, capturing still moments to candid shots. My photography journey was an exhilarating adventure. Each of my photos are unique in their own way, like a snowflake. I think their own aesthetics and individual color schemes is what gives them their substance and makes the photos memorable. I wanted my work to reflect my personality as a human and an artist, as well as a creator.
My collection is a slideshow of excitement. Bright colors and distinct subjects and figures construct each photograph. The roads I’ve traveled to capture such moments were mostly smooth, while others were bumpy. I wanted some photos to be serious, while I still managed to take pictures of things of my interest, such as the trucks and the rural landscapes. I can only wish that viewers can connect to my art and interpret my message in a positive light. Adventure is always out there.

PHO 101- Sound/Rhythm Assignment
“Getting Lost Between the Pages, While the Words Speak to Me”
This project explores the combination and flow of sounds and rhythm, while accompanied by still photos. I took photos of books I have read and am currently reading. Books are one of many things I am passionate about, and when you read a book, you’re inside a different realm. You explore others’ thoughts and ideas, and live as they do for an amount of time. The happy guitar sound blends with the images of the books, because happiness is a feeling I have while reading.

“Photography 101- Narrative Project- “The Long Road Home”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“The Long Road Home” tells the story of a road trip with many twists and turns. The beaming sunlight may give the story positive vibes, but it was the exact opposite. The irony is, light can sometimes cover up darkness. A weekend on the smooth roads traveling to and from western Pennsylvania is depicted through candid and staged shots. This narration shows the frustrating, tiring, and not-so glamorous aspects of being on the road.

Sidney Mansueto- PHO 101- Reading Homework, 10/31/19
While reading the article, a lot of the artists and photographers took creativity to new heights when taking their photographs. After reading, I had to find another photographer to observe their works. I found an article on google that listed emerging photographers in New York City, and came across the art and designs of up-and coming visual photographer Andrew Herzog. Herzog describes himself as a creative “thinker”. Originally from Pennsylvania, Herzog relocated to New York to pursue an education and start his photography career. While he is more of a graphic designer, his photography does raise some questions of their own.
The thing that captured my eyes about Herzog’s work was the colors and space in the photography. A specific image titled “Blue Sky or Sky Blue” is an image that fuses science and art together, so eloquently that it makes this up-and coming photographer’s talents shine. Herzog takes elements of graphic design and standard photography to create his products. His specific body of work from 2019 can be found on his website. Another photograph I liked of his was “Is/ And/ Or/ Something/ Is/ And/ Or/ Nothing”. The image shows people making one circle. This could be used to symbolize how the world keeps spinning and rotating, at a pace we are unsure of. It was a pleasing image.
Herzog takes creativity to new places in his works and his body of works build up as the photography progresses in element and style.

Sidney Mansueto- PHO 101- Exhibition Response
New York City is a destination where art meets culture. A cultural landmark where art is appreciated, New York has an endless amount of galleries and museums for all to enjoy. Through gallery hopping, I was able to view photographs taken by artists such as Roy DeCarava, Tom Gitterman, Don McCullin, and Nailya Alexander. Their works represent different effects events and phenomenons have on a society and capture it through candid poses as well as staged and directed. The first stop on my exhibition trail across the city was the Roy DeCarava exhibit at the David Zwirner gallery. DeCarava’s photo of a tree with just branches is a candid photograph, with its own beauty. I think he took this photo to represent a cycle of change. DeCarava also took many photos of an era of jazz music. The photos look close to the 1920s, a period when jazz was in the mainstream. The space of these photos show a “who-what-when-where-why” theme and DeCarava captures it perfectly. There is no clutter or crowdedness in his photography.
Other galleries I explored were Don McCullin, Tom Gitterman, and Nailya Alexander. The most colorful of all, and the most exciting in my opinion, was Gitterman’s abstract photography. His photos look like paintings. There are splatters of neutral colors. There is not a flourescent color in sight. One photo is a black canvas with white splatter. I interpreted Gitterman’s message as “Find the light in the darkness”. Another photo is an ugly, if I admit so myself, green color. It is a green someone would find on a carpet. This photo did have some nature undertones to it, however. These photos from this gallery relate to Gitterman’s abstract scheme which he conveys through his distinct photography. Another photographer, Nailya Alexander, took photos of people living and enjoying daily life. Her photography is more calm and warm. It was interesting and easy to look at, compared to Don McCullin’s intense war photographs. McCullin’s photographs taken during the Vietnam war, and in countries that were involved in it, was a heavy photo set. It was difficult to not tear up and feel the distress similar to the people who were photographed. McCullin’s photography was depressing. While history is one of my favorite subjects, this exhibit was my least favorite, due to the violent and heavy subject matter.
In conclusion, this exhibition exploration was an interesting way to see another side of photography. These photographs from the exhibitions were not just easily snapped personal photography from happy moments. The photographs I did see were from all kinds of moods and styles. It was interesting to see as much as I could and build my own connections to the photos.

Photography 101- Portrait
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These photos have a style that is strikingly similar to the work of artists Bruce Davidson and Andrea Modica. Some portraits are staged, while others are natural candids. Each of the photos have a “mood” that makes them stand out. Portrait can be more than just the modern favorite known as the “selfie”.
“Calm, cool, and smothered in warmth”
“Love”
“What are people doing?”
“Frequent inhabitants of Staten Island”
“Looking in”
“Taking a step back”
“Stressed”
“The way I see”

Photography 101- Nature
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Photographed September 1, 2019 at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. *From left to right:
“Tall”
“Near and Far”
“Whimsey”
“Purity Igniting”
“Metamorphic”
*All photographed by Sidney Mansueto
These images taken at the Botanical Gardens showcase nature’s effects on mundane photography. To some nature may seem boring, but it can also enhance quality and center control of an image. The image “Metamorphic” shows just that. The viewer can spot the butterfly in a second. Nature’s endless supply of beauty shines in this collection.
